Rains cause havoc again
New Delhi, September 5 Showers started in the wee hours and as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), it measured 36.4 mm till 8.30 am and another 10.8 mm till 5.30 pm. On account of rains, the temperature plummeted to below 30 degree Celsius. "The maximum temperature was recorded at 29.2 degree Celsius, five degrees below normal, while the minimum was 24.5 degrees, one degree below normal. Yesterday, the maximum was 33 degree Celsius and the minimum 26 degrees," said a Met official, adding that today, the humidity was between 83 and 98 per cent. The rains, meanwhile, brought the familiar problems of waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city. However, it being Sunday, the mess was comparatively controlled. The traffic was reportedly moving slow at Badarpur-MB Road, near Kashmiri Gate Metro station, Azadpur-Sarai Pipalthala road and Ma Anand Mai Marg due to waterlogging. Traffic snarls were also witnessed in the morning at New Rohtak Road, Ashok Vihar T-point, GTK Road, under Modi flyover, around Qutub Metro station, at Dabri Palam Road and Mathura Road-Bharon Road link. Meanwhile, a Haryana Roadways bus carrying 30 passengers got stuck in the morning under the Badarpur railway line flyover due to waterlogging, the police said. In what appears to be further bad news for Delhi's preparations for the Commonwealth Games, the Met department in its weekly forecast has predicted that heavy rains are likely to continue in northern India, including Delhi, for some more days. It said the western end of the monsoon is likely to oscillate north-south of its normal position leading to fairly widespread rainfall with heavy falls over Delhi and other parts of North India. |
Quality imaging services to strengthen PNDT monitoring
New Delhi, August 5 In addition, the Quality Council of India's certification aims at ensuring that the guidelines of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board on radiation are adhered to by the agencies concerned. The matter has become a point of concern, especially after the Mayapuri cobalt 60 radiation episode when several diagnostic centres and major hospitals were criticized for violating the set norms. They were found to be running either without radiation safety officer/trained technician or other radiation safety measures. "The AERB monitoring system is not that strong; there are no inspection teams to conduct routine surveillance on whether the centres and health set-ups are complying with the radiation safety norms. This quality imaging service would mandate that radiation safety officers trained as per the AERB norms are there to look after the radiation safety issues," said Dr Zainab Zaidi, assistant director of NABH. Besides, the accreditation would see that anybody exposed to the radiation field, including technicians, doctors and nurses, has access to the protective cover of lead shields and TLD badges, she added. Further, under the system, monitoring of quality and safety of imaging services-X-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI and nuclear imaging through set standards also come into play. "The surveillance mechanism under the programme would encourage strict compliance on matters of registration and installation of radiation equipments etc.," said Dr Poonam Narang, a senior doctor at radiology department of the G B Pant Hospital who was part of the team involved in working for NABH. Doctors believe that encouraging centres and hospital set-ups to come forward for the quality certification would strengthen the PNDT regulations. Though, the programme essentially targets the stand-alone diagnostic imaging centres, it doesn't dissuade small or high-end hospitals from applying for a separate accreditation for their radiology centre. "Any hospital can go for a finer detail assessment as it would add value and the hospital get more number of referral cases," said secretary-general of QCI, Dr Giridhar Gyani. "The quality programme has been picking up, with the national quality body already having seven requests, including two from Delhi and Chennai and three proposals from centres in Mumbai, Bangalore and Nagpur," added Dr Zainab. |
Dengue: MCD to start cleanliness drive today
New Delhi, September 5 Mehra said that intermittent rains had created mosquitoegenic conditions. All the departments of the civic body have been directed to participate effectively in the cleanliness drive and help in removal of garbage and stagnant water, the potential breeding places for mosquitoes, added Mehra. The sanitation campaign will be organised ward-wise in coordination with the councillors and officers of the works, sanitation, horticulture and health departments. The campaign will be conducted under the supervision and guidance of the deputy commissioners of the respective zones. Mehra appealed to residents' welfare associations, market associations, parents-teachers associations, teachers, students and social welfare groups to participate in the drive and help in controlling the spread of dengue by identifying and destroying mosquito breeding places. The municipal commissioner also directed the public health officials to further intensify efforts to check mosquito breeding at domestic level and initiate intensive anti-larval and fogging activities in the areas cleaned during the sanitation-cum-cleanliness drive. Meanwhile, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) chairperson Parimal Rai yesterday launched a sanitation drive at Shyama Parsad Mukherjee Aquatic Stadium, Mother Teresa Crescent, here. The drive will continue till September 24 . The drive was simultaneously launched at Talkatora Indoor Stadium and Major Dhyanchand National Stadium. The drive will take care of sanitation and cleanliness. Removal of garbage, debris, horticulture waste will be ensured. Encroachments on major roads, lanes and by-lanes of all main markets and residential areas will also be checked. |
University Goes Green
New Delhi, September 5 The varsity has made its 164-acre campus out of bounds for all vehicular traffic. Students and faculty on campus are expected to commute on foot or use bicycles. There are also plans that one third of the energy to be consumed on campus will be generated from alternative sources by 2015. The university's strength is set to go up from 3,500 to 10,000 students. Rashmi Sablania, the varsity's spokesperson, said, "We have plans to make the campus 100% eco-friendly. Keeping it in mind, no vehicular transport is to be allowed in the university area. Students are expected to walk. All the vehicles are to be adjusted in the new multi-level car park built at each of the two main gates." The varsity also plans to build two hostel blocks and they will be made keeping in mind green architectural concepts. Sablania said, "The new hostels will be built using green architectural concepts. Specialists in this field have been consulted for the design. Steel and cement will be used sparingly and re-cycled scrap paper will see greater use." What's more, plan is to use solar energy in a big way on campus. At present, the varsity employs solar geysers in hostels and also uses 120 solar lights on campus. This year, the varsity intends to generate at least 1.1 MW of solar electric power to make up a third of its total energy requirements. |
Instil civic sense in kids, CM tells teachers
New Delhi, September 5 The Chief Minister exhorted teachers to instil good habits and civic sense in students. Courtesy and civic manner would be required during the Commonwealth Games, she said. Addressing the teachers with the much-honoured word, ‘Gurujan’, the Chief Minister said that teachers were the ones who carved the careers of the children by teaching them great ideals so that they could become good citizens of the country and contribute towards the future of India. Dikshit said that her government would open more schools in different parts of the Capital and provide more facilities to the existing schools. The Chief Minister said that education was the foundation for the progress of any nation and that was why her government would try that every school gets sufficient staff and teachers. Teachers with their outstanding contribution, labour and sincerity have brought a sea-change in the level of education in Delhi, which has made school education in Delhi a role model for other states, said Dikshit. Lauding the education department, she said that with a number of unique schemes like BALA, Rupantar and YUVA etc., it has been possible to ensure the overall development of children. Echoing Dikshit’s thoughts, education minister Arvinder Singh said that school education in Delhi had become a role model and that other states had been emulating. “We are proud of our dedicated teachers and officers who have been able to accomplish a silent revolution, which has ensured an appreciable change in education and has also opened new doors of opportunities for the students. Apart from this, the education department has also achieved heights in sports,” said the education minister. |
New Delhi, September 5 He said that he had asked for a weekly report on the drive against begging. The Indian capital is reportedly home to over 60,000 beggars, and getting them off the streets is proving to be a cat and mouse game for the authorities. The Tahirpur beggars' home, with a capacity for 1,200, is under renovation. Toilets are being readied for more beggars as the drive is intensified. The anti-begging drive is focussed in areas such as the New Delhi railway station, Connaught Place, India Gate and Khan Market. The Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959, allows police to detain anyone found begging on the streets. -- IANS |

The city police had conducted the trial yesterday on Dhaula Kuan-SP Marg-Pancheel Marg-up to Hotel Samrat and on Vinay Marg-Panchsheel Marg T-point to Africa Avenue Outer Ring Road. Metro snag hits hundreds
New Delhi, September 5 Hundreds of people got stranded for over an hour at several stations. An official of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that there were technical problems on Line 2 and efforts were on to resume services soon. He admitted that the services were disrupted due to malfunctioning of a train at the Chawri Bazar Metro station. The malfunctioning forced some 300 commuters to wait at the Vishwavidyalaya station. Chatterati
It is not unusual for Aamir Khan to get attention for his movies. It is usually because he acts powerfully in them. But 'Peepli Live', the darling of the chatterati class at the moment, doesn't have him in any role at all. In this case, the medium and the message are truly his craft work even without any screen work. As the message is about the sad state of the Indian state, Aamir had to show it to two people at the very top--the Prime Minister and key opposition leader Advani. Both of them not only enjoyed the movie, but ensured that their friends and family got the message alongside in separate and exclusive show. Aamir knows how to get the heart of the state when he wants to. But the boldest move was Aamir's special showing for the media honchos, where the likes of Aroon Purie, Rajat Sharma, Rajdeep Sardesai and Deepak Chaurasia, and politicians like Kapil Sibal and Salman Khurshid watched Aamir's take on the silly state of Indian TV news reporting. Aamir began the evening with telling his hand-picked audience that since they probably would not want to talk to him afterwards, he was speaking to them before.
The audience watched with rapt attention the parody of the obsession of TV channels with chasing 'live' news. The cynical and mindless story of chasing TRPs must have made many in the audience squirm. But Aamir's skill showed in his masterly blending of multiple realities into a canvas of social chaos. It must have thrilled the director that he got a standing ovation even though it was an audience that knew that its cover had been blown in full cinemascope
splendour. Raising money
for animals If the invitation card says "Kingfisher", everyone expects Vijay Mallya to be there. A fund-raiser was organized by "Kingfisher" and "People for Animals" to raise money for needy animals. The evening was named "Fly a Carpet to Your Wall" where this gathering at The Lalit Hotel in Delhi got a lot of artists, designers and page 3 types to show their love for animals. PFA is run by Maneka Gandhi and her sister Ambika Shukla. The event saw journalist Nalini Singh, designer Ritu Kumar and actor Nasir Abdullah, but the title sponsor Vijay Mallya was nowhere around. This was a limited collection of carpets choreographed by Sunil Sethi. These were handwoven carpets and their designs were unique. The money collected by this fund-raising exhibition will be used for shelters of needy animals. Lots of drama in
India Men’s Week The India Men's Week saw a lot of drama, makeovers and activity in the Capital last week. As usual there were lots of delays and inconvenience. The designers had to play clever as men's fashion is not broad spectrum with creativity here. Narendra Kumar's presentation was an Indo-Japanese which was a tale of shadow warriors, but luckily the clothes were fluid in form and the theme was warrior clothes. Samant Chauhan had edgy men's wear and here he was inspired by the psychic killers and there were socks stitched with pants which, according to the designer, was the style of a particular killer who didn't want to leave footprints. The famous Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra did not disappoint the crowds. The highlight here was cable knits used for jackets and there were knitted super fit churidars for men. Ashish Soni is always very practical, and so, more wearable. His schoolfriend Robert Vadra was present to boot. But the master of ceremonies as usual was the one and only Rohit Bal. "Gudda" to his friends, hired 11 buggies, decorated them in his style and lined them alongside the porch of the hotel where the show was being held. "Gudda" has always been a master of drama. This show was full of colour. 'Achkans' for men were embroidered heavily with lots of 'jhilmil', sarees and skirts worn by men. Pravesh (of the "Big Boss" fame) walked the ramp for "Gudda". Seeing the buggies, a group of eunuchs turned up, asking for money assuming it was a wedding party. Now was that for real or stage-managed, one wondered. |

Ghaziabad, September 5 According to superintendent of police (city) Avdesh Kumar Vijeta, Praveen Singh, a first year MA student of MMH College, had gone out of his house in Rahul Vihar Colony for a stroll with his pet dog around 7.30 p.m. on Saturday. "When he did not return home for more than an hour, his parents started looking for him in the neighbourhood and found him lying in a pool of blood outside the Green Hotel on the National Highway-24. His head had several injuries indicating that he was hit by bamboo sticks and rods," he said. The boy was taken to Fortis Hospital in Noida where doctors pronounced him dead. "We suspect that someone at the hotel would have objected to him walking his dog and it could have led to an argument between both sides, which could have snowballed into a fight and someone hit the boy. The matter is being investigated," Vijeta said. A case was registered at the Vijay Nagar police station against unidentified persons. No arrest was made till Sunday evening.
