‘Leading batsman played suspiciously in IPL’
Melbourne, September 7 According to a report in 'The Australian', quoting two unnamed IPL officials, "a leading batsman had played so suspiciously that they could not explain his behaviour." "...both officials agreed that his performances were highly suspect. They did not want him named for fear that it could be traced back to them and lead to retribution in India," the report stated. The newspaper said the officials found the "player's performances were puzzling, particularly scoring slowly towards the end of an innings when the opposite should have been happening." "He consistently under-performed and often appeared uninterested or distracted." The report said IPL officials have also been receiving complaints of "matches being rigged" by various franchises. "He has been under the scanner for a while," the official said. The newspaper said the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit is "frustrated" with several boards in the subcontinent "for failing to take stronger action against their players after being provided with information about dubious behaviour. The latest report comes in the wake of the ongoing spot-fixing scandal exposed by a British tabloid which has led to the suspension of three Pakistani cricketers - Test captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Aamir and Mohammad Asif. We are not aware of any wrongdoing in IPL: Amin, Shukla
New Delhi: The BCCI today said it was not aware of any wrongdoing by any cricketer in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 tournament. A report in 'The Australian', which quoted two unnamed IPL officials, said “a leading batsman had played so suspiciously that they could not explain his behaviour." However, IPL's interim chairman Amin and BCCI spokesman Rajiv Shukla denied receiving any report from the ICC and said they were not aware of any such wrongdoing. “There is a constant endeavour to check on any wrongdoing by the players. It's been there and to make it stronger we continue to be vigilant under the ICC rules and as well as IPL regulations. Everything is under constant monitoring and surveillance," Amin said. “As IPL chief I am not aware and don't have any knowledge of any request made from the ACSU for investigation unless it has been made to BCCI," he added. BCCI's media and finance committee chairman Shukla also denied any such reports and said if any such thing is reported, the Anti corruption and Security Unit of the ICC would look into it. Gill doubles cash awards for CWG and Asian Games
New Delhi, September 7 The announcement to increase the cash incentives was made by the Sports Minister M S Gill, who also expressed confidence that the Commonwealth Games will be held successfully in October. He said the main outcome of the Games would be the performance of our sportspersons and the sporting legacy left behind by the event. "With a view to encouraging the sportspersons, the Minister announced doubling of cash awards for the coming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games to Rs 20 lakhs (from Rs 10 lakhs) for gold medalist, Rs 10 lakhs (from Rs 5 lakhs) for silver medalist, and Rs 6 lakhs (from Rs 3 lakhs) for bronze medalist," the Ministry said in a release. Meanwhile, the State Sports Ministers stressed on the need to enact a National Sports Act to bring more accountability in the functioning of the federations and promoting better governance. Saina to help redeem women shuttlers
Saina Nehwal will hog the limelight in her quest for a gold that Indian women shuttlers have never won as home conditions and current form of players combine to make badminton one of the brightest medal prospects for the country in the Commonwealth Games this year. On current form, world rankings and the size of the field at the Commonwealth Games sans Asian giants China, Indonesia, Korea and Japan, Indian shuttlers can hope to at least clinch five medals out of the 18 at stake in the October 3 to 14 event. The country has so far won 11 medals, including two gold medals in men's singles, but the yellow metal has always eluded the women shuttlers with Aparna Popat winning a silver and a bronze in 1998 and 2002 editions respectively. It was during the Melbourne Games that a 16-year-old Saina burst into the limelight when the then coach Vimal Kumar chose her as the top singles player against Singapore in the bronze medal match and the Hyderabadi delivered by helping India win the bronze. Four years later, the Hyderabadi had risen in stature to such an extent that she became a Khel Ratna awardee and the face of Indian badminton.

JCD CRICKET LEAGUE
Sirsa, September 7 Batting first after winning the toss, Chandigarh Challengers posted a formidable 208 in the stipulated 20 over. Openers Naman Sharma and Amit Verma gave a solid start by scoring 20 and 14 runs, respectively. It was followed by the onslaught of Michael Vishal who pounded 79 quick fire runs of just 39 balls studded with 7 fours and 5 sixes. Chintan Sehgal too joined the party with 44 of 28 balls. Reebok team had a disastrous beginning by loosing their opener Farman Ahmed for a duck, but soon recovered from the early jolts through incredible batting by Yogesh Nagar scoring a ton (102) of just 57 balls powered by 10 fours and 7 sixes. Gaurav Chhabra too contributed valuable 32 runs. Abhishek Sharma hit 32 runs of 17 balls helping Reebok cruise to a comfortable victory. Paes-Black crash out
New York, September 7 Second seeds Paes and Black, who won the 2010 Wimbledon mixed doubles title, lost 3-6 4-6 to the German-Bahamian pair in the quarterfinal. Paes and Black had clinched the Australian Open mixed doubles title in January this year. India's Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi are still in the race in men's doubles category and would take on South African-Belgian combo of Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman in the quarterfinal. After grinding out a victory over No 13 Jurgen Meltzer, the names opposite Roger Federer's in the bracket will start looking more familiar. Maybe uncomfortably so. The five-time US Open winner beat Melzer, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 yesterday, for yet another straight-set victory at Flushing Meadows. Next up - a meeting with one of the few players who has enjoyed success against both Federer and Rafael Nadal on the sport's biggest stages. That would be No 5 Robin Soderling, who defeated No 21 Albert Montanes 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the US Open quarterfinals for the second straight year. The runs at the US Open are nice, but where Soderling has really made his name is against Nadal and Federer at recent French Open.

See it to believe it!
Rurka Kalan (Jalandhar), September 7 Fast forward to 2010, and Rurka Kalan has become the face of hope, change and passion for soccer in rural India. Youth Football Club (FYC) has brought many laurels to the area and state, including the Street Child World Cup win in South Africa. And it is in these promising times that Parmar is back in the village to add another twist to the tale. He, alongwith YFC president Gurmangal Das, have laid down a plan to come out with a DVD that will provide coaches with creative training sessions and cover the concepts of a proper dynamic warm-up through a number of creative drills. It will also cover technical development through game-specific drills and game intelligence through various small-sided games. The DVD will be provided in Punjabi as well, which will help the coaches to understand the key concepts and coaching points of each drill and exercise. The DVD will be distributed free of cost to all youth coaches in Punjab and to any coaches in the country who are interested in gaining coaching insight. Speaking about the project, Parmar said: “I’m excited to be a part of this project that YFC has envisioned. I believe we will be able to provide the coaches a good platform for providing their players with the required age specific skills to achieve success in the upcoming years. Our goal over the next year or so is to develop a second edition of this DVD so that the coaches will have 50 session plans in total.” “The YFC project is becoming well known across the globe and is receiving amazing recognition from the Punjabi community worldwide. I am honoured to have a small part of this beautiful project, but the people who deserve the real credit are the volunteers and coaches in the community of Rurka Kalan who are providing the children with an opportunity to be successful in the real world.” It is good to see that someone is finally waking up to the idea that the body, mind and ability of a child is different from an adult. Talent knows no age, but if not nurtured in the right way, it knows no direction as well. |
