The death of a 60-year-old man riding a bicycle, who was seriously injured in a road accident yesterday, once again revealed the manner in which the police and hospitals function in dealing with such incidents. Narrating the ordeal, the victim’s son Karfew Singh told TNS that the doctors treating his father told him around 4.30 pm that his father Sukhal Praja Pati had died.

Court orders status quo
Land acquisition for Mullanpur residential urban estate
Chandigarh, September 7
Nearly four months after a notification was issued under Section 6 of the Land Acquisition Act declaring that approximately 420 acres in Mohali district were required for the Mullanpur residential urban estate, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the maintenance of status quo.

Rape victim’s granny moves court for abortion

While the UT administration is yet to take a decision on whether to allow medical termination of pregnancy of a 13-year-old girl who was allegedly raped, the latter’s grandmother has moved an application in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate Anshul Berry requesting the court to direct the police to have the abortion conducted. The girl was an inmate of Snehalaya, a home for destitute children in the city.

Close call for AI passengers at city airport

The 153 passengers aboard the Air India Mumbai-Delhi-Chandigarh flight narrowly escaped a disaster at the city’s airport today when an eagle got entangled in the front undercarriage of the aircraft that had landed safely earlier and was taxiing towards the terminal building. However, none of the passengers was hurt.

MC asks GMADA to channelise N-choe
Mohali, September 7
The Municipal Council here has demanded that the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) should channelise the N-choe before handing it over to the civic body for maintenance as the council is short of funds and also lacks adequate infrastructure. The choe passing through various parts of the town was cleaned by GMADA after The Tribune carried out a campaign highlighting the issue. A sum of Rs 20 lakh was spent on cleaning the choe about three months ago after which the civic body was asked to take over the maintenance work.

Strike halts life in city
Chandigarh, September 7
The one-day strike by various trade unions against price rise and privatisation hit normal life in several parts of the city with transport services being severely affected. Commuters had a harrowing time as buses of the state-run transport corporations, including the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) and the Punjab Roadways, remained off road for the major part of the day.

High drama at LAC office in GMADA
Mohali, September 7
High drama prevailed at the office of the Land Acquisition Collector (LAC) of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) when an evacuee, Raghbir Singh, got court orders for attachment of the official car of the LAC, 50 ceiling fans, 100 tables, 150 chairs, 10 air conditioners and other office furniture from Ropar Additional Session Judge after the collector failed to pay enhanced land compensation of Rs 32 lakh against the land in Mauli village acquired in 2001 from Sectors 76 to 80.

IT dept to probe

A day after the Punjab excise department seized hawala money worth Rs 35 lakh, the case has been handed over to the investigation wing of the income tax department. An official of the income tax department today visited Mohali to probe the matter. The hawala money has also been handed over to the income tax department.

Woman held with fake currency, opium

The Patiala police has claimed to have recovered fake currency worth Rs 1.77 lakh and five kg opium from a 35-year-old woman, identified as Harvinder Kaur alias Jassi. Giving this information, Patiala SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill said the police arrested Harvinder during a special checking drive near the Bus Stand of Chahal village, Bhadson, in Patiala district.

Vehicles stolen

A car and a motorcycle were stolen from the different parts of the city. Sanju, a resident of Sector 40, filed a complaint with the police alleging that someone had stolen her Maruti car (CH-01-Z-3783) from her residence during the intervening night of September 3 and 4.
