Woman thrashed to death, son held
Ropar, September 7 Surinder from Rampur village had allegedly murdered his mother Baljit Kaur.Her husband Ujagar Singh told the police that the mother-son had an altercation over some issue. Angry Surinder allegedly beat up his mother with conveyor belt of a machine meant for cutting fodder, resulting in her death. Ujagar tried to intervene Surinder attacked him, too. Ujagar said the village sarpanch called up the police, but Surinder had already fled. Ujagar told the police that Surinder had been using drugs for the past several years and was declared a proclaimed offender in one of the cases. DSP Bhupinder Singh Thind said the accused was arrested today from near the village. |

Suicide Case
Ambala, September 7 They placed the body of Satish in front of the police post and blocked the road. Satish had committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on September 5. According to information, Madan Lal, father of Satish, had borrowed some from Ramji Lal. After the death of Madan Lal, Ramji Lal asked Satish to pay him Rs 1 lakh, including the interest of the amount. Satish Kumar was unable to pay the huge amount. The relatives of Satish Kumar alleged that he consumed some poisonous substance as he was under tension. They were demanding the arrest of Ramji Lal. The SHO, city police station, rushed there. The agitated crowed dispersed after the assurance of the SHO that appropriate action would be taken against Ramji Lal. |

Woman held with fake currency, opium
Patiala, September 7 He said that when the police spotted Harvinder coming on a TVS Scooty, they asked her to stop and during the search, they found fake currency and opium. “The accused, who is resident of Fatehgarh Sahib district has been booked under the NDPS Act and under the Indian Penal Code”, the SSP stated, while adding that the police had produced Harvinder in a local court and obtained a three-day police remand. He further said that since it was learnt that in 2003 also, Harvinder had remained in jail on charges of possessing opium, the cops would investigate the matter
in detail. The police officials stated that preliminary inquiries indicated that Harvinder was acting as a courier for delivering fake currency from one place to other. Patiala SP (detective) Gurdeep Singh Pannu and SHO of Bhadson Police Station were also present. |

Chandigarh, September 7 In another incident, Simarnjit Singh, a resident of Sector 43, reported that his Yamaha motorcycle (CH-04-T-3812) was stolen from the Sector 22 market on September 2. Two separate cases of thefts have been registered.

Football: IFA, Mahilpur academy enter semis
Chandigarh, September 7 In the top-four bracket, Gorkha Training Centre (GTC), Shillong; Indian Football Association (IFA), Kolkata; Mahilpur Football Academy and Mohun Bagan of Kolkata will vie for the top honours. In the first semifinal, Group A leader Gorkha Training Centre, Shillong, will face Group D champions Indian Football Association, Kolkata, while the second semifinal would witness Group B topper Mahilpur Football Academy facing the challenge of Group D winner Mohun Bagan. Earlier, in today’s match, Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) ousted Rohit Football Academy, Orissa, by 4-0. With their third successive victory, GTC earned nine points in Group A. GTC dominated the proceedings throughout the match. Bijoy Subba opened the account in the 13th minute. Sushil Metei doubled the lead in the 32nd minute. In the 52nd minute of the game, Metei made the things difficult for the rivals by netting his second and the team’s third goal. L Robert completed the winners’ tally in the 80th minute. Kunal Tamang of Gorkha Training Centre was shown yellow card by the referee for rough play in the 60th minute. In other outing of Group D, strong contender Indian Football Association thrashed Himachal Pradesh by a big margin of 7-0 to pave their way to the semifinal round. IFA, which has not conceded a goal so far, finished the five-team group programme with 12 full points. Bhahrai Suren played the vital role in the win by striking thrice (23rd, 66th and 80th minutes). Earlier, it was Javed Ansari, who drew the first blood in the fifth minute. Subnay Malik (12th), Papan Majumdar (15th) and Jetu Das (26th) contributed one goal each in the win.

NCC sailing expedition ends
Chandigarh, September 7 Cadets covered over 450 km across the Gobind Sagar Lake in Himachal and also participated in various social activities like spreading public awareness campaigns. The base camp of the expedition was at Raipur under the control of Cmdr Lekh Raj. The cadets used three DK Whaler class boats and two cadet-class naval sailing boats for the expedition, along with a motor boat for safety purposes. They visited several places alongside the Gobind Sagar, including Lathiani, Bangana, Marhau, Kohdra, Porohian, Bhakhra, Galu, Kosharian, Kanphara, Nakrana and Raipur. The team encountered variable weather conditions and learnt how to tide over all situations. The cadets also learnt about many other facets of life in the defence services. They were exposed to service subjects like sailing, boat pulling, ship modelling, drill, communication and seamanship during the expedition. |
PU get better of Khalsa College

The handball team of PU Campus, too, emerged winner against National College for Women, Machhiwara, by a huge margin of 17-0 in the Panjab University Inter-College Handball (Women) tournament being played at the same venue. Boxing meet from Sept 18
Chandigarh, September 7 The Chandigarh pugilists, born in 1996, 1997 and 1998, are eligible to participate in the championship, which will be held in different weight categories between 30 kg and 57 kg. Entries may be sent on the letterhead duly signed by the head of the institution, along with an attested photocopy of the age certificate of each boxer to the honorary secretary of the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association on or before September 16. Weighing-in will be held at the competition venue on September 18 between 8 am to 10 am. The players are required to present the original date of birth certificate at the time of weighing-in, failing which they will not be allowed to participate. During the championship, the Chandigarh sub-junior men team will be selected for participation in the national championship to be held at Bangalore from November 10 to 14. |

Chandigarh, September 7 Sidhu’s XI openers, Sarul Kanwar and Karan Goel shared a partnership of 62 runs for the first wicket before Kanwar was enticed by right arm leg spinner Sarabjit Ladda and was caught by Yogesh for 43. Goel was joined by Amit Prashar and the duo took the total to 121 before Goel was trapped in front of the wicket by off spinner Gaurav Gambhir for 39. At close of today’s play, Amit Prashar and Pankaj Dharmani were together on 35 and 15, respectively, with teams total reading 149 for two in 42 overs. Sports academy at The Millennium School
Mohali, September 7 In the academy budding cricketers and roller skaters of all age groups can hone their skills. “Our doors are also open for outsiders as well,” said Komal Singh, school principal. The academy has a separate cricket section, having two turf pitches and a cemented pitch. The school has roped in a former Haryana Ranji player to impart training to the budding cricketers. At the roller skating section, which is opened for students from four to 14 years, the national champion Balram Singh would impart training to the skaters. Besides, the academy would also have an active sports club for children from five to 14 years. The section would encapsulate a programme to build stamina and basics of sports. “Our club is a structured programme, which develops health, fitness and behavioural skills among children,” Komal Singh added. |
