DC son pushes mom down the stairs
New Delhi, July 11 “Shamim Akhtar, an officer with the sales tax department has been accused by his mother Shama Hafiz and his younger brother Adil for beating them up. Shamim allegedly started a fight with his younger brother and when his mother intervened ,she too was beaten and pushed down the stairs," said the senior police officer. He added that Shama was admitted first to Max Hospital and later in Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital from where she was discharged this evening. However, the police is yet to register any case in the matter. “No case has been registered in this incident yet as Shama Hafiz sustained normal injuries in the incident. We are probing into the matter after which legal action will be taken,” added the officer. According to the Shama, one of her sons had gone to Akthar’s house yesterday and when he did not reach home, she called him. Enraged at this, she claimed, he came to her house and assaulted her and her son. Shama also said that Shamim had left her home eight years ago. Meanwhile Akhtar’s sisters and brother alleged that despite their complaint, the police did not reach their house in time and was not taking up the issue seriously. Suraiya, one of the sisters of Shamim, said that her brother Shamim is egoistic because of his position. “This is not the first time when he misbehaved with my mother. Number of times he had abused her. This time he has crossed his limits. Instead of taking stiff action against my brother the police is trying to hush up the case,” Suraiya said. |
27 watch towers on Noida e-way
Parmindar Singh
Noida, July 11 "Out of the 27 watch towers, seven will be set up at the entry point and five at the closing point. The rest will be installed along the Expressway at a regular distance for surveillance," said Ajay Sahdev, SSP (Traffic) who is the nodal officer for the project. "Additional manpower required for posting at strategic points on other nearby roads for traffic diversion too has been planned to avoid traffic snarls. Moreover along 20-km cycling track at every 5 m distance there will be one police constable. Police force from other districts too will come and aid the local police," said Sahdev. "In addition to the team of commandos, a Special Weapons And Techniques (SWAT) team too was being trained to provide foolproof security during the event. Candidates have been shortlisted. Specialised high-technology weapons will be provided to the team," said Sahdev. "In view of the eveteasing incidents, special arrangements were being made for security of sportswomen. Special enclosures and barricading will prevent access of local youths to the female participants," he said. "We are holding weekly meetings with CWG organising committee to review the security arrangements," he added. Sources said the union home ministry has decided to send security forces from the Centre and the Noida police will only have to look after the traffic system and outer ring security and law and order in the city. |
All want pie of CWG publicity
As the countdown to the Commonwealth Games begins, everybody seems to be trying to grab some publicity. If it means issuing contrasting statements, it does not matter as long as politicos find their names on newspaper pages and news channels. One day Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna expresses satisfaction over the pace of development at Commonwealth Games Village and its related projects, the next day Delhi government ministers AK Walia and Arvinder Singh Lovely lambasts the DDA - which comes under the LG - for its lackluster work. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit issues photographs for publication whenever she visits any project site, irrespective of its significance, while opposition leader in Delhi Legislative Assembly, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, rides on Municipal Corporation of Delhi for his quota of publicity as his party rules it. If the mega event does not live up to the expectations, one wonders whether these very people will be willing to take the blame with the same eagerness. The American English
The main problem starry-eyed Indian students face in the land of opportunities is very basic, that is communication. Even those apparently well versed in the English language realise that the English they speak and the English Americans converse in are not exactly the same. Counselors giving lecture to students, who are readying to leave for the US, said this much. It is not that Indians are completely at sea when it comes to the American English, but they are often confused with the slangs used by foreigners. Like if somebody asks them, 'How you doing', many Indians think they have been asked for an introduction and they don't stop till they give their whole background, said one counselor. But it is the just the Americans' style of greeting. Similarly, if somebody says, 'catch you for lunch', some desi students think they have been invited for lunch, where it only means to see the person again. E. Delhi unsafe for women
A survey has reinforced the common perception that India's Capital is not safe for women. But many would find it rather distressing to know the areas which are particularly unsafe for the fair sex. Researchers associated with a couple of such surveys say the stretches of east Delhi where upper middle class apartments and haphazard colonies stand cheek by jowl are most vulnerable. The public transport is so dreaded that women hardly venture into buses, though the Metro is an exception. Many women who smoke or drink say they avoid smoking outside for fear of inviting attention of ruffians and prefer buying booze from Lutyens' Delhi and sipping it in the comfort and loneliness of their homes. Many men told surveyors that women smoking in public or wearing flashy dresses are equally to blame for this sorry state. Bharat Bandh: Light-fingered have field day
The Bharat Bandh on July 5 sure inconvenienced most people, but not everybody was complaining. Supporters of pro-bandh political parties protesting at Minto Road got a shock of their lives when many of them found that they had been unburdened of their wallets while they shouted slogans and sent back office-goers forcibly. The thief was caught by the Kamla Market police and quite a few victims got their wallets back. The thief said his tribesmen were very active across the day, doing their job finely amidst the milling crowd of political activists. Community college by NGO opened
Naya Gaon (Gurgaon), July 11 Addressing a gathering at the inaugural ceremony of an IGNOU-affiliated autonomous community college set up by former IPS officer Kiran Bedi's NGO Navjyoti India Foundation here yesterday, Professor Pillai maintained that women empowerment could be achieved only through financial independence. "Education plays a central role in the process of community development," he asserted, adding that the mammoth task of educating nearly 50 crore children and youth of the country could be accomplished if philanthropic individuals, credible social organizations, corporate houses, banks and community members put in concerted efforts in this direction. Underlining the importance of vocational courses, Professor Pillai pointed out that there was no dearth of jobs in the country, but the employers required trained individuals. Talking to The Tribune, the vice-chancellor disclosed that talks were on to set up a state-level training centre for community college teachers at Manesar, near Gurgaon. He said the underlying idea behind establishing such community colleges was to reach out to those children and youth who wanted to educate themselves but could not pursue their studies due to unavailability of quality educational institutions in their vicinity. In response to a query, Professor Pillai maintained that they would try to rope in some banks or other financial organizations to provide educational loans to the needy and deserving students. Dr Kiran Bedi said Navjyoti Community College offered affordable certificate and diploma courses designed to empower individuals through appropriate skill development which could help them earn money. The courses include English-speaking, computer education, desk-top publishing, web-designing, graphic designing, tally, animation; communication skills, personality development, vocational education and training, coaching for competitive exams in police services and security agencies etc. "The students can even avail low-interest bank loan facility provided by Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and State Bank of India," she added. Dr Bedi exhorted the villagers to send their children, especially girls, to school. "Don't make your home a jail for them," she said. She revealed that the Navjyoti Foundation would soon open three more community colleges in Karala, Bawana and Jahangirpuri areas of Delhi. |
Hot, muggy day in Delhi
New Delhi, July 11 During the day, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), both the high and the low temperature settled above the average at 38 degree and 28 degrees Celsius marks, respectively. Also, high levels of moisture in the atmosphere, with the high reaching 71 per cent, compelled some citizens to postpone their market outings till late noon. But, the occasional gusts of breeze that swayed trees, provided the city some respite from the muggy weather. Amidst all this, the silver lining this season is that despite the delayed entry of southwest monsoon, the deficit in average amount of rainfall has already been recovered, with the city recording 116.2 mm of rain as of date, supposed to be 23 per cent above the normal for this time of the year. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Capital recorded 2.6 mm of rain at the Safdarjung area, while traces of rain were seen in the Palam area. For tomorrow, the weather is expected to remain similar with a partly cloudy sky and thundery development towards the late afternoon or evening. The high and the minimum mercury levels would settle around 37 and 28 degrees, respectively. |

Pawar gains a tactical end
Delhiites welcomed Sharad Pawar when he went to see the Prime Minister to relieve him of his burden. In fact, it came as a relief for the High Command who was fed up with the UPA minister's tactical retreat for not doing justice to his portfolios. In fact, Sharad had called on a senior Congress leader during the IPL controversy between Lalit Modi, Praful Patel and Shashi Tharoor. During this meeting, Pawar told the leader that if he and his colleagues were going to be harassed by different agencies, it was better the NCP supported the government from outside. It was then decided that once Pawar took over as the International Cricket president, he himself would give up one of his portfolios. It is also said that the Maratha wants to concentrate on Maharashtra while the Shiv Sena is losing grip there and Raj Thackeray is anyway his man. The other ministers who may find a change in their portfolios in this reshuffle are Jairam Ramesh who has rubbed many ministers the wrong way. Mamata may ask one of her partymen to be accommodated. Ajit Singh will have to be adjusted after he supported Satish Sharma to come to the Rajya Sabha. Many MPs eyeing MEA post
Many MPs in Delhi are eyeing the MEA slot after Shashi Tharoor left. And to top the list is the Arabic-speaking Keralite E. Ahamed who was Tharoor's predecessor. He has a keen interest in Arab countries. Also, doing some rounds in Delhi are three Nair MPs from Kerala who belong to Tharoor's caste. In this ministry, there are divisions like the Gulf and the Haj, Africa, Latin America passport and policy planning. So, unlike most other ministers of state, this minister has his hands full. BJP and its ‘success’
The BJP did what it is best in. Delhi came to a standstill on July 5 due to the Bandh. The BJP called it a success not realizing that it was more of a scare for Delhiites than their call that did it. The protestors, including women, were on Delhi roads vandalizing vehicles and burning effigies. The new Metro was stopped and buses were burnt, schools and markets remained shut. The BJP leaders courted arrest as a part of their drama. Some unlucky ones like Arun Jaitely in Lucknow got no VIP treatment in the lock-up; after all it is Mayawati's territory. He was made to sit on a cemented platform without any cold refreshments! Rajnath Singh claimed that the price of petrol in Bangladesh is 22 rupees per litre, in Pakistan it is 23 rupees per litre, but in India it is 51 rupees per litre. Nitin Gadkari in true Bollywood-style claimed that this was only a trailer and the full picture is yet to follow. The price rise, of course, has hit the poor but their main question was: why purchase petrol to burn it; will there be a rollback in the hike now? In plain words, life came to a standstill in Delhi with 95% shops not opening or forced to be shut down and RSS workers threatening to burn offices in Lajpat Nagar which were open. Can Omar cut the Kashmir knot?
The turbulence in Kashmir has the Congress High Command wondering if Omar can handle Kashmir. Despite his friendship with Rahul Gandhi, Congressmen both in Delhi and Srinagar have started criticizing Omar's lack of political and administrative inexperience to relate to the man on the street. Delhi was also appalled that the stalwarts of Kashmir were truant. When the valley began to erupt, Omar was on a personal visit to Rohtang Pass, the State's traditional leaders like Farooq Abdullah and state Congress stalwarts were conveniently abroad. They left the already-overloaded Chidambaram and newbie Omar Abdullah to manage matters. The High Command here is wondering how long the Army can be deployed there for peace. |
World Population Day
New Delhi, July 11 This is important as according to government projection, the country has witnessed a five-fold increase in population over the past 100 years, he said. A delayed first child could help in achieving stability in population rise, said Azad even as he ruled out coercion for the purpose. The run, organised by the Jansankhya Sthirtha Kosh (JSK) in association with the Delhi government to observe the World Population Day today, began at Vijay Chowk and culminated at India Gate. Nearly 3,000 schoolchildren from Delhi participated in the run. The theme of the event this year is 'Everyone Counts'. Both Azad and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit emphasised on the need for empowerment of girls and women to control population and said that it was important to encourage small families as resources were limited. "India has a share of 17 per cent in the world population, but only 2.5 per cent of the global land," pointed out Azad. “Allowing unchecked growth of population would halt the merits of development from precipitating downwards,” Dikshit said. According to a report brought out by JSK, considering the pace at which the country's population is growing, the population would become double in the next 50 years, making the goal of sustainable development a distinct possibility. The government reports point out that male child preference both in urban as well as rural parts of the country, high rate of infant mortality, early marriage of girl child followed by teenage pregnancies are some of major factors behind increasing population. |
