Haryana floods send Delhi veggie prices soaring
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 9
Floods in the neighbouring states of Haryana and Punjab have sent the prices of vegetables skyrocketing in the national Capital as their supply has decreased drastically.

Vegetable rates in different markets of Delhi have reportedly increased by 100 per cent and even more.

Traders said that things could get worse if the condtions do not improve in the two states soon.

A survey of different markets revealed today that prices of vegetables like cauliflower, ladies’ finger, brinjal and tomato have gone up to Rs 30, 35, 30 and 50 per kg respectively.

It is in stark contrast to the prices prevailing in the states couple of days ago i.e. before the outbreak of flood. These vegetables were sold at almost half the rate of what they are prices today.

“We get our supplies from UP and Haryana and to some extent from Punjab. The flood has disrupted transportation and spoiled the crops as well. The demands of vegetables have also gone up in the flood-affected areas, so we are getting much less supply,” said Shambhu Singh, a vegetable dealer.

He and others related with the business said that the prices could come down if things improve in a couple of days. However, if more rains occur and flood situation worsens, then prices could go up further.
