7-yr-old motherless child flees home to study
New Delhi, July 3 Wearing a dirty white shirt over a blue half pants and with untidy hair, Manish came to Mukti Ashram on a Sunday last month and said he would stay there only if they helped him study otherwise he would go back. Manish was six when his mother died. He was the only child. “My father is a drunkard and used to beat me. Since my mother died, I slept many nights without food. I wanted to study and so, I decided to leave. I did not have a single penny, but was sure that I would study,” Manish said showing the marks on his body he got from his father’s beating. Leaving his house, he went to Gwalior railway station as this was the only place he knew. He was standing at platform no 4 when some men came and took him with them saying that they would help him study and also give him all the good things. He fell into their trap and was later pushed into the business of beggary on trains. “There were five people who had caught around 28-30 children in a house. They forced us to beg on trains. If we failed to earn money, they would beat us,” said Manish. “Manish was begging at Mathura railway station when two Bachpan Bachao Andolan volunteers saw him. He said that he was hungry and wanted to eat something. The volunteers gave him 20 rupees and the address of Mukti Ashram saying that he could live, study and eat at this place,” said Kailash Satyarthi, BBA founder. Surprisingly, the little boy landed up in the ashram all alone. “I could see the passion to study in his eyes. Not many leave their parents and home at the age of seven just to study. He is undoubtedly a hero for us,” said BBA director Dhananjay Tingal. Presently, Manish finds himself in his element at Mukti Ashram. He will soon be sent to a different ashram where children of his age live and study. BBA officials say that after sometime as Manish becomes comfortable here, they will take him to Gwalior and rescue the other children. |

No bail for rapist of Dutch tourists
New Delhi, July 3 District judge S.P. Garg dismissed the bail plea, saying, “The plea of Yasir Altaf, who has claimed that the physical relationship was consensual, was devoid of any merit as the investigation into the case was at the nascent stage.” In the bail plea, Altaf’s counsel, Sufian Siddiqui, had claimed that Altaf had been falsely implicated and that the police did not follow the basic procedure of verifying the claims of the complainant. Siddiqui claimed that Altaf had consensual relationship with one of the women. However, this was vehemently opposed by the public prosecutor, who said that the offence was strong and had more gravity as the victims belonged to a foreign country. Altaf and his accomplice were arrested from Kashmir after one of the women lodged a complaint at the Connaught Place police station here. The women had alleged that Altaf and his accomplice, posing as tourist guides, raped them several times over the past five months and also robbed them of their money.
