Power demand at new high
New Delhi, July 1 The demand in the Delhi today surged past the earlier high of 4668 MW while touching 4720 MW in the evening. However, power officials said that despite the unprecedented demand, no major power supply disruption was reported. Before June 21, the first highest power demand of the season was 4,581 MW that was recorded on May 24. Delhi’s largest distribution company, the BSES appealed to the residents to use electricity judiciously. “Residents who have not fully disclosed the actual load they consume should have it corrected because we need to increase our capacity to such homes to ensure uninterrupted supply,” a BSES official said. While the demand headed north, Delhi’s power generating units on Monday provided a dismal 1,055 MW. The distribution companies (discoms) were left with little option but to procure energy from other sources. The discoms, however, claimed that other than power cuts in a few areas, they were able to meet the demand successfully. In June last year, the highest demand was recorded at 4,337 MW, since then there has been more than 8 per cent increase in demand.
No power shortage for Games: CM
New Delhi, July 1 She said the Capital has adequate power to fulfill its requirements. If there is loadshedding, it is only because of some technical snag. The weather in October is also comparatively better which should bring down the power requirements, the Chief Minister added. However, she admitted that the construction of Bawana power plant was getting delayed and it would not generate power before the CWG. When asked about reducing the power tariff, she said this decision would be taken by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) which had not submitted its report to the government so far. Dikshit said the city would have enough power once the plants in Bawana and Jhajjar started functioning. Delhi will get an additional 1,500 MW from Bawana and 750 MW from Jhajjar. Both these plants are likely to generate power by the end of this year, she said. The Chief Minister said the power demand in the city might reach 15,000 MW daily in five years, but the government was preparing for it. |
CM briefs PM on Games projects
New Delhi, July 1 Dikshit told reporters about her meeting with the Prime Minister at a function held at FICCI office. Having seen the report of various Games projects that are running behind schedule, the Chief Minister yesterday held a meeting with her ministers and allocated the responsibilities of the projects to them. She also asked the ministers to submit weekly reports of the projects to her. According to sources, Dikshit expressed unhappiness over the pace of the projects under social welfare minister Mangat Ram Singhal and health minister Kiran Walia. Majority of the ministers have cancelled their daily meetings and have now started visiting the sites of the projects. They are meeting projects managers and asking them to complete work before August 31. Dikshit has also asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to speed up the work of the projects under their jurisdiction. The MCD is carrying out the beautification work of the Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh and Paharganj areas, while the NDMC is responsible for the renovation of Connaught Place and some other areas. Both the agencies are also supposed to remove debris in their respective areas. |
MCD kicks off sanitation drive amid workers’ protest
New Delhi, July 1 Though the MCD began its drive, some parts of the city, especially the western areas, remained messy with garbage lying unattended as the safai karamcharis did not show up for the day. In the absence of sanitation employees, even the garbage trucks could not be dispatched to collect garbage from landfill sites. And to add to the mess, protestors were seen throwing filth and dirt in some zonal offices of the MCD. The opposition party in the MCD, Congress, meanwhile, has said that the sanitation-cum-cleanliness drive launched by the corporation had suffered setbacks at the beginning itself due to employees' strike. "There are no brooms, equipment or chemicals in the stores of the sanitation department. Due to financial mismanagement, a large numbers of safai karamcharis are suffering. They have not received salaries for the past three to four months, said Jai Kishan Sharma, Leader of Opposition, MCD. |

The sporadic showers towards the evening spelt some respite, but humidity levels with maximum of 66 per cent and minimum 42 per cent continued to trouble Delhiites and according to the weather department similar conditions are likely in the days to come. “More pre-monsoon rainfall is expected tomorrow, but that would not be of much help with the day remaining hot.
