Students suffer as DU, colleges wrangle over sports trials
New Delhi, July 10 Many colleges that participated in the centralised trials are not satisfied and are planning an individual re-trial. Still others failed to send the list and now are planning individual trials. Some colleges failed to participate in the centralised trials and held their own individual trials. The scenario is chaotic and students are feeling harassed. The Delhi University Sports Council’s (DUSC) position is that only the centralised trial is valid and has now been concluded and there are no plans for another trial for colleges and students that missed it. Further, the DUSC refuses to recognize individual college trials. The DUSC coordinating director, Sudarshan Pathak informed, “we will not be conducting another trial for colleges that have failed to send their list or for colleges whose list has not been approved. The trials have concluded for this year and also the only valid trial is the one we have held.” The chaos is aggravated by several colleges that failed to send their list of candidates to the DUSC. These colleges include Kirori Mal, Kamla Nehru, Daulat Ram and Aditi Mahavidyalaya. Some of these colleges are currently holding individual trials. The situation is further complicated by colleges like Jesus and Mary, St Stephen’s and Kamla Nehru that have held their own individual trials. Meanwhile, colleges remain dissatisfied with the centralised trial. GNSD Khalsa College, despite having attended the centralised trial, is planning to hold an individual trial as it is not clear on the position and capability of students that participated. Hansraj College principal V K Kwatra informs, “The university trials have not been very satisfactory, we respect the fact that there should be one centralised trial but it has been conducted in an unprofessional manner and there have been many delays in the process. The list that has turned up does not specify the position of candidates and this creates a problem for colleges.” The fact that the DUSC list does not specify the position of candidates is causing a problem for colleges and many are planning a re-trial to judge which position candidates can play in best and where they stand. However, the DUSC director Pathak’s position on this is clear that all individual re-trials are invalid. Pathak says, “Only the centralised trial is valid. If colleges need any further verification of players on the list they need to ask the university and not conduct a re-trial.” As the university and colleges wrangle, the students suffer. Nandita Dutt, a candidate informs, “The trials are very chaotic. Only some colleges have participated in the centralised trial others are holding their own trials. I have gone for the centralised trial and individual trial for the colleges I am interested in. This is very confusing, there have been so many delays. Nothing is clear, the university owes it to us to do a better job of the sports trials.” |

Rehman Khan, another student volunteer of the university, says, "I love sports and by volunteering, I will get a unique opportunity to see the Commonwealth Games from close and also interact with the players. 11 murders in 36 hrs
New Delhi, July 10 According to police, the bodies were found around 7.30 in the morning from a park in B-block of the locality. While the bodies could not be identified, police said that the man is in his late twenties and the girl in early twenties. The bodies were found covered under a thatch of grass, and according to information, both the bodies had foam coming out of their mouths with injuries on the neck. "It seems that the couple was murdered by poisoning. However, strangulation is also a probability as handkerchiefs were found tied to necks of both the victims. There were injury marks as well," said a police official adding that bodies have been sent for the postmortem. The investigation team is working to establish the identity of the victims. According to a senior police official, a SIM card has been recovered from the pocket of the man's trousers. "There was nothing except a SIM card in their pockets. 60-year-old tonga
stand razed
New Delhi, July 10 MCD officials said the stand was demolished as part of the implementation of the new policy on horse-drawn carriages in Delhi. The license of the tong owners had expired on May 31. They were issued notice to vacate the land but they did not follow the orders, said the officials. "The stand was demolished as the license of these tonga owners expired on May 31. They moved the high court to take stay orders but the court also did give them any relief. So, they had to be removed from the place as tongas are not allowed on Delhi roads," said city zone deputy commissioner Kishan Kumar. The tonga stand at the Asaf Ali Road leading to Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, where the Civic Center is located, was one of the oldest in Delhi. It was running since before Independence and housed 60 horses and 60 donkeys. To rehabilitate the owners, the officials said they would be given tehbazaari licenses so that they can continue with their employment. According to the new policy, the tonga owners will have to sell off their horses out of Delhi and obtain a certificate from the district administration concerned as proof of sale of the animal in that town. In lieu of this certificate, the civic body will award a tehbazari licence. However, this is seen by owners as a bizarre decision. There are 232 registered tongas, the ancient mode of transportation, in the city and about 300 horses to cater to the needs of tonga rides in the Walled City area. "We have been trying to persuade them to stop plying their horse-drawn carriages for a long time. The reason is that because of these slow moving animals, it is becoming difficult to move in narrow lanes," said the official. |
