Beware of anganwari ‘training centres’!

The Social Security for Woman and Child Development Department, Punjab, has taken a serious note of the publication of a news item in Punjabi daily newspapers regarding opening of training centres for imparting training to the anganwari workers in various cities of the state for their employment.

As many as 35 anganwari workers, who were proceeding to the Badal village, the native village of Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, were detained by the Sadar police but were later freed in the evening.

Majithia, while addressing rural meetings at Valtoha, Rattoke, Manawan and Sursing, condemned the Union government for not releasing compensation for farmers on the land across the fencing in the border belt.

The ongoing row between the SDM, Balachaur, and Bar Association, Balachaur, over the issue of alleged use of foul language against an advocate by the SDM in his court has started hotting up as the District Bar Association (DBA), while expressing solidarity with the Balachaur Bar Association, has started a two-day strike here today.

A deputation of the District Bar Association, comprising Mehnga Singh Banwait, president, Amrik Singh Rana, member, Punjab and Haryana Bar Association, H.S. Longia, Ajay Murgai, Brijnandan Singh Rana and K.K. Thakur, met Deputy Commissioner Shruti Singh and demanded immediate action against the SDM.

Giving details, Rana said the SDM had misbehaved with an advocate when he came to his court for appearing on behalf of his client. The Balachaur Bar Association had already passed resolution condemning the behaviour of the SDM and had sent its copies to the Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Justice and president, Punjab and Haryana Bar Association, demanding stern action against the SDM.

The DC had assured the delegation of proper inquiry and action into the case, said Rana, adding that if the issue was not resolved within two days, the stir would be intensified in consultation with the Punjab and Haryana Bar Association.

Pardeep Aggarwal, SDM, Balachaur, when contacted on phone, while expressing his unwillingness to divulge any detail said he had submitted his report to the Deputy Commissioner. Regarding allegation of misbehaviour being levelled by the lawyers against him, Aggarwal said it was just in retaliation against the misconduct by an advocate while he was in his court.

The Deputy Commissioner could not be contacted.

Beware of anganwari ‘training centres’!

The Social Security for Woman and Child Development Department, Punjab, has taken a serious note of the publication of a news item in Punjabi daily newspapers regarding opening of training centres for imparting training to the anganwari workers in various cities of the state for their employment.

Director of the department Madhavi Kataria while cautioning the people stated in a press note here today that the department had neither given recognition to any of such centre nor it had opened the same for imparting the training for providing employment to the anganwari workers.

The workers were being recruited under the ICDS scheme of the department purely on merit basis with the consent of village panchayat and block samiti concerned. There is no condition of any course or diploma for the eligibility of angwari workers or helpers. A three-month training was being imparted after their appointment by the department and refresher course facility was provided from time to time.

He cautioned the people not to be misled by so-called training centres.

Anganwari workers detained

Tarn Taran, May 13
As many as 35 anganwari workers, who were proceeding to the Badal village, the native village of Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal, were detained by the Sadar police but were later freed in the evening.

According to information collected by this correspondent, all the workers of block Tarsikka (Amritsar), under the leadership of Daljinder Kaur, State General Secretary, Anganwari Workers Union, Punjab, were going to take part in an indefinite dharna to be staged at the Badal village, to stress on their demands.

Daljinder said the union had been demanding an enhancement in of Rs 200 per year in their contribution fee, as was committed by the CM before coming to power this time. The government had failed to fulfill the promise even as more than three years had passed, she rued.

Daljinder said they were detained by the police at about 12 noon and were released at 7 pm. She added that all their workers were put in one suffocating room. She said the state repression would not dishearten them and they would carry on their agitation to get justice. — OC

Majithia, while addressing rural meetings at Valtoha, Rattoke, Manawan and Sursing, condemned the Union government for not releasing compensation for farmers on the land across the fencing in the border belt. 

Majithia said the state government had released grants worth Rs 100 crore for different development works in the border belt, which included renovation of school buildings, improving power supply, roads, drinking water facility and provision of other infrastructure. The development works inaugurated on the occasion included the building of sub-tehsil, Khemkaran, and a bridge on the Manawan-Valtoha nullah, while the projects for which the foundation stones were laid included a hostel for 100 girls at Valtoha and a community hall and sports stadium at Sursing. — OC

Hotel owner fined Rs 21 lakh for stealing power

Tarn Taran: The owner of a local Seven Star Hotel has been served a notice imposing a fine of Rs 21 lakh for stealing power and a case has also been registered at the Anti-Power Theft Police Station (Powercon), Verka here today. Ram Pal, inspector of the police station, told this correspondent that a team of Powercon had inspected the premises of the hotel few days back and had smelled power theft there. The team took the meter of the hotel in its custody and sent it for examination in the laboratory of the corporation. The report of the laboratory, received by Powercon today, confirmed power theft by slowing down the speed of the meter by the hotel owner, said an XEN of the corporation. Tampering with the meter was also confirmed in the report. A case of power theft has been registered against the hotel owner. Another hotel owner of the local Jandiala Road had also been fined (Rs 20 lakh) recently and a case was also registered against him for stealing power. — OC

Rs 5.75 lakh of hawala money seized

Nawanshahr: Acting on the tip-off, CIA in charge Rakesh Kumar and Rahon SHO Hardip Kumar put up a joint naka near Kanaun village on the Rahon-Machhiwara road and seized alleged hawala money amounting to Rs 5.75 lakh from three persons identified as Ajay Bhardwaj, Surinder Singh and Harjit Singh, residents of Ludhiana. They were travelling in a Santro car. DSP Satpal Singh Bhangu said the accused in alleged hawala trading could not provide any proper detail of the cash found in their car. The case has been sent to the Assistant Director, Enforcement, Jalandhar, for further investigation. — OC

2 smugglers held with 35 quintals of poppy husk

Nakodar: The police today busted an inter-state gang of drug smugglers by arresting two of its members and seizing 35 quintals of puppy husk worth Rs 50 lakh. The consignment, packed in hundred bags and kept under 50 bags of onions, was seized from a truck (PB-10CD-0347) near bus stand of Nangal Jiwan village on the Nakodar-Jalandhar Road on Thursday afternoon. SSP Jalandhar (Rural) Aashish Chaudhary said the smugglers arrested were identified as Harjit Singh of Dallan village in Moga and Raju Singh of Kasian village in Gorakhpur (UP). Giving further details, DSP Rajinder Singh said the gang members purchased this puppy husk from Rajasthan at Rs 10,000-15,000 per bag and were coming to Jalandhar to sell the consignment at Rs 50,000 per bag. — OC

Taxi driver kidnapped

Hoshiarpur: Two unidentified persons kidnapped taxi driver Darshan Singh (58) of Achalpur on May 9. According to police sources, two persons came to Darshan Singh at Adda Binewal and hired his Tata Sumo van (DL-7C-0520) for Hariana Bhunga. Later, his van was found near a canal on the Garhshankar-Banga road. Darshan Singh has been missing since then. The Garhshankar police has registered a case under section 365 of the IPC in this connection. — OC
