A youth was shot dead while three others sustained bullet injuries in a group clash near Burlton Park in board daylight here today.

Eyewitnesses revealed that there was indiscriminate firing by members of both groups. The tension between two groups, one led by Pankaj and other by Sunny, son of a former municipal councillor Om Prakash, had been simmering since last night after Pankaj and Sunny had an altercation at a “jagran” in Shiv Nagar, near Sodal.

Pankaj and Sunny had challenged each other and the spot was fixed to set their scores the next day. Pankaj called his over two dozen friends and so did Sunny. The armed members of both the groups reached the spot and the clash took place.

During the clash some persons opened fire in which Sahil (21), resident of Gopal Nagar, a companion of Sunny, got killed. A bullet pierced his chest leaving him dead on the spot. Tajinder Singh, resident of Reru village who was in Pankaj’s group, and Satinder Singh of the Sunny group also sustained bullet injuries. Pankaj also sustained serious head injuries. Phagwara, May 9
Careless working of the employees of the National Highway Authority of India, engaged in the six laning of the national highway, created a major snag in civil and Army communication lines as they damaged underground optical fibre cables of the Telecom Department and Army near the bus stand late last night.

The entire communication system of the Telecom Department and Army beyond the bus stand was paralysed which could not be restored till filing of the report on Sunday. The 571 Sub-Group of Army from Jalandhar Cantonment rushed to Phagwara to repair the damaged optical fibre cables and main cables.

SDO (Telephones) Manjit Singh and JTO Purshotam Lal said the communication system of the Army was badly affected. More than 15,000 telephones besides broadband services in several parts of Phagwara town and rural telephone exchanges of Khurampur, Sangatpur, Wahid, Panchhatt, Rihanajattan, Ranipur Sunrra, Ranipur, and Chiherru were lying dead even after several hours of the snag.

Though the Army communication may soon resume as its technicians are on the job, BSNL service may take few days to be restored, said SDO Telecom Manjit Singh.

Meanwhile, Phagwara SDM Amarjit Paul said stern action could be taken for the careless working of the NHAI staff as no risk could be taken about Army communication. He has asked the NHAI authorities to adopt all necessary preventive measures for the safety of underground cables belonging to Army and Telecom Department.

It is a good news for the students who have been pursuing a career in engineering. Major multinational companies have started organising campus placement camps after a gap of about two years.

H.S. Batth, Chairman, Doaba Khalsa Trust, and Manjit Singh, Executive Vice-Chairman of the Doaba Group of Colleges, said the encouraging response from the major IT companies like Accenture, Karvy, Infosys, Inter Globe, IBM, Elli-Lilly, Wipro, KIPS, TCS, Money Maters, Red Alchemist, etc, to the “Mega placement month” organised by the Doaba Group of Colleges in April was a good sign for the educated youth. The placement drive was also open for the students who had completed their graduation last year.

“This mega employment event has also brought smiles on the faces of those students who have become apprehensive about their career due to global recession,” said Manjit Singh, adding that during the past two years there was low or zero placement by companies. “But, now the major giants in IT sector have started recruitment again and about 4,000 aspiring students belonging to different colleges from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh, Jammu and Kashmir participated in the campus placement drive by different MNCs during the month. As many as 600 students were shortlisted by the different companies and after going through rigorous selection procedure of group discussion, interview rounds followed by technical test as many as 400 candidates were finally selected,” he added.

The reconstruction of a bridge on the Bhangi Choe was started on March 12, 2009 for which requisite funds were also provided by the SAD-BJP government.

After inaugurating both these projects, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal would address a public meeting at the local Roshan Ground.
