Stubble burning goes unabated

After the harvesting of wheat crop with a combine machine, the practice of burning stubble by farmers goes on unabated around the town. Despite the orders of the District Magistrate banning the stubble burning by farmers, it continues and the ash and smoke arising thereof have been causing grave health problems to the inhabitants of the town and rural areas.

Malta Boat Tragedy: Picture gallery to be set up

In its meeting held under the chairmanship of Balwant Singh Khera, the Malta Boat Tragedy Probe Mission has decided to set up a picture gallery at Hoshiarpur, in collaboration with the Servants of the People Society, to commemorate the mishap on 25th December, 1996 in Malta Sicily Channel in which 300 South Asian youths, including 170 Indians, were drowned by the International Human Traffickers mafia.

Dowry: Husband, mother-in-law booked
Hoshiarpur, May 4
On the complaint of Rakesh Kumari, daughter of Kartar Chand of Chack Sadhu, the Mahilpur police booked her husband Manjit Kumar, son of Piara Lal, mother-in-law Paramjit Kaur and some other members of her in-laws family, all of Mahilpur, under sections 498-A, 506, 406 and 34 of the IPC last evening.

Government okays ROB near Science City
Approval for another ROB in the city at Bidhipur level crossing

While construction of four railway over-bridges (ROB) at Domoria bridge, Khalsa College, DAV College and Maqsoodan is hanging fire for a long time, the Punjab government has now approved construction of an ROB at Bidhipur crossing at Suranassi.

However, it is not yet exactly known when the construction of the Bidhipur ROB will be taken up. The state government has given its approval for the construction of the Bidhipur ROB along with 17 other ROBs to be built at a cost of Rs 350 crore in different parts of the state, sources said.

One such ROB will be constructed at Wadala level crossing, near Pushpa Gujral Science City (PGSC) in Kapurthala. PGSC Director-General Dr R.S. Khandpur said Science City was pursuing approval for constructing an ROB at Wadala rail crossing on the Ferozepur-Jalandhar rail track and for four-laning of the Jalandhar-Kapurthala road.

He said it had approved both the proposals pursued by the PGSC for facilitating the public to visit Science City. There were several proposals still pending with the Central and state governments for increasing the number of visitors to Science City, he added.

Meanwhile the sources said two of the four ROBs hanging fire in Jalandhar city for a long period are likely to be completed in the next two months. The construction of the Maqsoodan and Khalsa College ROBs would be completed in June this year, they added.

Two brothers electrocuted, SDM orders inquiry

In a shocking tragedy, two brothers in their twenties were electrocuted in nearby Khaira village late last night. Reports received here said Sukhbir Singh (22) was returning home, when he was electrocuted due to heavy sparking in 11 KV live wires.

His younger brother Lakhbir Singh (20), who was searching his elder brother, tried to save him but was electrocuted too. The villagers raised an alarm and immediately informed PSEB officials, who switched off the power lines.

A pall of gloom descended in the village today after getting the news. Sarabjit Singh, father of the deceased, his wife and young widow of Sukhbir Singh were in deep shock.

Phillaur SDM Pritam Singh expressed condolences to the family members of the deceased. While talking to The Tribune, SDM said he had written to Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar, PSEB officials and other officials concerned to provide maximum financial help to the family members. Bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their family members after conducting the post-mortem examination.

The SDM said PSEB officials had admitted a technical snag behind sparking from loose live wires. The SDM ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Pay Woes 
Veterinary Inspectors launch protests today

To press the government to concede their long pending demands, the Punjab State Veterinary Inspectors Association has decided to hold district-level demonstrations across the state on May 5.

In a press statement, Amrik Singh Kahlon, district president of the association said it would hold statewide demonstration in front of the offices of deputy directors, department of animal husbandry in all districts headquarters. He said the state government is reluctant to consider long pending demands of veterinary inspectors which include commencement of diploma course in Guru Angad Dev Veterinary University, Ludhiana, implementation of revised salary scales recommended by Sixth Pay Commission and recruitment of unemployed veterinary inspectors in Animal Husbandry Department.

IMA adopts industry workers

The IMA, Jalandhar, celebrated World Asthma Day at Krishna Engineering Works, Ladowali Road, and adopted 300 workers of the industry along with there kith and kin for free consultations on asthma.

Dr Rajiv Sharma, chest specialist and project director of this Health Awareness Programme, stressed on preventive aspects of asthma insisting that this years theme is “You can cure your asthma” and 50 per cent reduction in hospitalisations due to asthma would be witnessed in the coming five years worldwide. He said according to guidelines of Global Initiative for Astham (GINA), 10 per cent of global population is suffering from Asthma.

He said the role of inhalers is of utmost importance on its control. The menace of grain dusts and hay in Punjab is a major trigger factor not only in rural areas but cities also.

Dr TS Randhawa Secretary IMA stressed the disuse of feather & foam toys in kids .Kids of Asthmatic or Allergic Patients are at a higher risk of developing Asthma.

Dr Sanjiv Sharma President IMA announced IMA Asthma Helpline numbers for any type of help and guidance for asthma patients in the district. Mukesh Juneja of Krishna Engineering Works thanked IMA for this noble gesture.

Stubble burning goes unabated

Despite the orders of the District Magistrate banning the stubble burning by farmers, it continues and the ash and smoke arising thereof have been causing grave health problems to the inhabitants of the town and rural areas.

When contacted, Mahinder Singh, Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, said here today that smoke and ash cause serious respiratory and eye problems. Also, the practice does not leave any chaff behind, which is an important food for the cattle. This eventually affects the dairy industry.

The police has also become a mute spectator to the offence committed by hundreds of farmers. — OC

Malta Boat Tragedy: Picture gallery to be set up

According to the press release by Balwant Singh Khera, Chairman of the Probe Mission, an eminent artist Master Dharampal has been assigned the duty to prepare a project report in this regard. He stated that Advocate Ezachia Pialo Reale from Italy, in an e-mail to him, informed that Turab Ahmed Sheikh, who had arranged the crew for the small ship F-174, which sank in the Mediterranean International Waters, had been sentenced to 30 years imprisonment by the Court of Assize of Appeal of Catania (Italy).

He had challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court which was rejected a day before yesterday.

Turab is a Pakistani citizen, married to a woman of Malta and was running a restaurant there. The plan of shipment of illegal immigrants was drawn at his restaurant.

During the police investigation, he had admitted to arrange the crew for the boat. He had been directing them on the phone till the boat sank. The members welcomed the decision of the court for sentencing the chief of the mass murder.

Dowry: Husband, mother-in-law booked

According to the police sources, Rakesh Kumari alleged that these persons used to torture, maltreat and beat her for bringing more dowry from her parents. When she failed in fulfilling their demands, they threatened her to remain ready to face dire consequences.

Duped by agents

A fake travel agent has duped two persons of Rs 24 lakh in the name of sending them to America. The Garhshankar police last evening booked Gurmit Singh, son of Shameer Singh, of Grover Colony, Jalandhar, and his some accomplices under sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC.

According to police sources, Sohan Singh, son of Mehar Singh of Possi (Garhshankar), alleged that the accused took Rs 12 lakh each from him and another youth of his village, Manjinder Singh, son of Balwant Singh, on February 19, 2007, for sending them to the USA. But neither did they send them abroad nor returned the money. — OC
