Services terminated: DC K SPannu on Tuesday terminated the services of patwari Jaswinder Singh, who was absent from duty since April 2006. He was posted at the Babowal circle,and had gone to the US without getting leave sanctioned.

BASSI PATHANA
One booked for abduction
: Raj Rani, a resident of Patwar Khana mohalla, has alleged in a complaint to the police that Mukal Paneeka, who resides near local Usha Mata Mandir, had kidnapped her 16-year-old daughter Indu Rani. According to the police, Paneeka, a migrant labourer, was a frequent visitor to the house of Raj Rani, a widow. The police has registered a case under Sections 363 and 366-A of the IPC and started the search.

KHARAR
Power suspension
: Power supply to the areas of Kharar, Morinda, Kajouli water works, Gharuan and nearby areas shall remain suspended from 9 am to 6 pm. The power would be shutdown due to ongoing maintenance work of 132 kV line wherein a new tower is being erected to raise wires at a higher level. Last week too, similar power cut was imposed in the same areas.

‘Fill up vacant post’: A deputation of the employees of the District Agriculture Department today submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, raising the demand of filling up the vacant post of Chief Agriculture Officer here to ensure normal functioning of the department as well as drawing and disbursement of  the salaries to the employees.

Campus placement
: A job placement drive organised by Sri Sai group of institutes, Badhani-Pathankot, concluded on Sunday. Group chairman S.K. Punj said that 600 students were shortlisted for job placement from different streams by representatives of multinational companies.

Three arrested: The police arrested Jagir Singh, Bholi Devi and Rachna Devi here on Tuesday and seized a huge quantity of illicit liquor and lahan from their possession. The police has registered a case under the Excise Act.

Working president: Satish Chander Saini has been appointed Punjab state working president of the All-India Saini Sewa Samaj by Indraj Singh Saini, national president of the Saini Sewa Samaj, Delhi.

Federation: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the All-India Retired Railway Men Federation for 2010-11: president - Sat Pal Sharma; general secretary - Banarsi Lal Sharma; and treasurer - Milkha Singh.

362 donate blood
: The 55th birthday of Acharya Sudhanshu Maharaj was celebrated by Vishav Jagriti Mission Patiala Mandal with great pomp and show at Gobind Ashram, Gobind Bagh, Rajpura road. A blood donation camp was organised and 362 units of blood were collected by teams of the PGI, Chandigarh, and Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala.

Writers’ centenaries
: A series of seminars, poetry-reading, creative-writing, workshops will be organised by Panjab University to commemorate the birth centenaries of three Indian writers- Sacchidanand Hirananda Vatsyayana Ajneya, Shamsher Bahadur Singh and Nagarjuna. PU Vice-Chancellor RC Sobti said the events would be organised in collaboration with the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi in the first quarter of 2011 in which eminent Indian writers and thinkers will participate.

Designer collection: The University Institute of Fashion Technology and Vocational Development, Panjab University, as part of their “Fashion Illustration and Design Collection” subject put up a display of their design collection on Tuesday.

Low water pressure
: Water will be supplied at low pressure to many parts of the town as urgent maintenance work has to be carried out. According to the Water Supply and Sanitation Wing, there would be no supply of water at noon on May 5 and the evening supply would be at low pressure as the PSEB would be undertaking maintenance work at Kajauli waterworks.

: Amartex will open a 24-hour theme restaurant, with a banquet hall, at Sector 14 here. Gazab India, the Rs 40-crore project, will be set up on 8,000 square feet.

Kalka
Raid at sweet shop
: A team of health department, Panchkula, and local administration, including district health officer and SDM Kalka, raided a local Ishar Sweet Shop of main bazaar, Kalka, on Monday. During the raid, the team took samples of various eatables like gol gappa, laddu and burfi. The official sources revealed that the team also inspected upper storey of the shop, which was being used by labours. A vediography film was also made which has been sent to the department concerned. Notably, a team of local administration had also challaned the same sweet shop for voilation of the Labour Act two days ago, the sources added.

Jammu
Student commits suicide
: Reshmi Gupta, a student of Class XII, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her house in Subhash Nagar this afternoon, the police said. It further said no suicide note was recovered from the scene. The Sarwal police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC in this regard.
