Kapurthala, May 10
Gazing at the night sky is one of the rare and wondrous experiences that we city goers are left with in the name of a connection with nature.

Cashing in on this aspect, the Pushpa Gujral Science City (PGSC) has arranged for night watching sessions on its premises from 7 pm to 9 pm on Saturdays for just Rs 30.

The management of Science City has installed as many as six telescopes for sky gazers, especially students of the region. One computerised and five manual telescopes were installed in the presence of PGSC Director Dr R. Grover on Saturday evening.

The activity may be new to Punjab but is quite popular in South India where people plan “astronomy vacation” for sky gazing on clear nights.

The PGSC has planned to provide an opportunity to the general public and students where they will be taken on guided tours of night sky gazing through telescopes.

The computerised telescope works with a remote control where one just has to type the name of star, planet or celestial object, the telescope will automatically track and focus the object in question, whereas the visitors have to focus the telescope to see the object while using any of the five manual telescopes.

The telescopes have an aperture of six inches and eight inches to make the visitor see craters on the moon surface, ring of saturn, phase of venus, jupiter, mars, mercury and other sky objects like constellations, nebulae and andromeda galaxy, said PGSC Director-General Dr R.S. Khandpur while talking to The Tribune.

The PGSC aims at creating an awareness about celestial objects with the project designated as wonders of the universe: night sky watching, engaging the public and providing an opportunity to young people and amateur astronomers to look above their heads and enjoy the mystery of the universe, he said, claiming that the telescopes would be the first in North India which would open for general public.

Patwari dismissed for corruption
P.K. Jaiswar/Tribune News Service

Amritsar, May 10
Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu today dismissed patwari Tejinder Singh of Ajnala tehsil (at present posted at Municipal Corporation) on the charges of corruption and tampering with government records.

The decision was taken after an inquiry conducted by the Revenue Department. This is second case within a week in which a patwari has been dismissed from his services. Earlier, a patwari was dismissed for continually remaining absent from his duty. He had shifted to the USA without any intimation and requisite permission from the department.

“Officials investigated into the charges levelled by a number of people. The investigating team went through the records and documents and found a number of glaring irregularities,” said Pannu.

Referring a land dispute case, the District Collector said Tejinder Singh deliberately did not mentioned about the stay orders imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the remarks column of the “farad” due to which the land was further registered in another name.

Tejinder Singh is the same Patwari against whom the Rajasansi Nagar Panchayat had levelled serious charges of illegally transferring the panchayat land in the name of political big shots, including wife of an Akali leader.aPannu said, “He was given a chance to present his case before the inquiry committee on May 10. During investigations he was found guilty of corrupt practices. He was dismissed under the Punjab Civil Services Rules-1970.”

When will they get sewerage facility?
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, May 10
Although the town has twice been brought under the mega project of extension and augmentation of basic amenities like drinking water and sewerage over the past decade, residents of Qila Mohalla falling under Ward 1 are still crying for the basic civic amenities.

In the absence of the basic amenities, especially sewerage, there is no arrangement of drainage of sewage which has made their life miserable.

“As there is no drainage system, the residents have to drain out water with the help of buckets from the drains constructed outside their houses twice a day. The water so drained out manually gets stagnated in the streets, making it difficult to pass, besides becoming a health hazard,” rued Mohalla residents Manjit Kaur and Kulwinder Kaur.

“Besides, as there is no sewerage, the residents have to go to nearby fields to ease themselves and it is quite embarrassing for the women folk,” lamented residents, adding that sometimes the women folk had to face inconvenience when owners of the nearby fields prohibited them from entering their fields. The field owners also prohibit them from draining out sewage into their field.

The residents had submitted memorandums to the local MC, the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister and the Deputy Commissioner, but to no avail.

“Now they have decided to fight it out through demonstrations and are even ready to resort to fast if the authorities remain apathetic to their problem,” warned the residents, who gathered in large numbers at the office of the Municipal Council today to protest against the alleged callous attitude of the government.

The irate residents were pacified by former MC president Lalit Mohan Pathak, senior vice-president Pirthi Chand, municipal councillor Manjit Kaur and assistant municipal engineer Sat Pal Sharma.

The MC authorities attributed the delay in laying water supply and sewer pipes in their locality to the existence of rail track in the vicinity. To get permission for laying sewer and water supply pipes under the rail track, the matter had been taken up with the Railways, which, in turn, had asked the MC to deposit the charges for undertaking the project. Now, the locality has been brought under the “Sutlej action plan” for the extension and augmentation of sewerage at a cost of Rs 18.83 crore. The MC had passed the resolution for depositing its share and tenders for the purpose had been called, said Satpal Sharma.

But, the residents wanted a time-bound action plan.
