Kandwal residents take up causeway construction as govt sleeps
The commuters were a harried lot as the causeway got washed away in flash floods
Bharat Bhushan Dogra

Pathankot, November 17
The people and businessmen on both sides of the Chakki river near Kandwal, 13 km from here, in Himachal Pradesh have been affected due to the causeway on the Chakki river (linking the Pathankot and Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh) getting washed away.

They put in their potential to make the causeway movable today.

The people, mainly businessmen and labourers working in small industrial units, jointly made efforts to construct a temporary structure by laying bajri, sand and soil to make the causeway movable, which had been washed away following flash floods in the Chakki river due to heavy rain which lashed the area three days ago.

With the washing away of the causeway for the second time in a year, traffic not only came to a halt but also cut off the areas on both sides - Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The people of the area, with the help of owners of industrial units and crusher units, after finding the authorities of both the states in a lethargic enough to ignore the problem (of re-construction of a structure to allow vehicular traffic to pass through the Chakki river) decided to take the initiative and ensure smooth traffic flow.

With the initiative taken to construct the structure, people who have been avoiding covering a distance of more the 20 km (through the Lodhwan village) will be hugely eased. It will save a lot of time, energy and money of the people used to taking the causeway as a route.
