Sachin remains a master blaster
The editorial “A sublime innings” (Nov 7) has rightly paid rich accolades to the great cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar. With his knock of 175 runs in the one-day international, he has once again displayed mastery of his bat over the ball. He has not only silenced some of his critics but also once more proved to be a master blaster. He has reached an unassailable position, which might be difficult to surpass in the near future. Even Australian captain Ricky Ponting is way behind the Indian sports legend. Sachin’s complete application of mind and body to his game is what makes him a genius and a cut above the rest. May this icon reach greater heights and bring more glory to India. Brig H S SANDHU (retd), Panchkula

II Indeed, Sachin Tendulkar has silenced his critics with his immaculate batting. In fact, there was a demand from certain quarters that he should call it a day. However, once more he has shown that he is one of the greatest. His knock of 175 runs was a pleasure to watch and words fail to describe his superb innings. SUBHASH C TANEJA, Rohtak Road safety clubs It seems pertinent to recall that Himachal’s, former Director-General of Police Ashwani Kumar constituted road-safety clubs in a bid to contain the growing menace of road accidents. The clubs held monthly meetings to take stock of the situation. The district police chiefs took active interest in the activities of these clubs. The experiment yielded encouraging results. However, with Mr Kumar’s exit from the post, the clubs in question reeled under neglect and have become virtually defunct. These clubs should be strengthened in a bid to minimise road mishaps. TARA CHAND, Ambota (Una) Save water The government of Haryana is finding it difficult to implement the ambitious Indira Gandhi Paye Jal Yojna due to the non-availability of water (news report, “Three years on, water woes hit scheme” by Geetanjali Gayatri, Nov 15). While there has been depletion of ground water throughout Haryana, the people of the state have shut their eyes over the huge wastage of drinking water. There is gross misuse of water in Ambala Cantt. This irresponsible attitude may prove disastrous, as there can be no life without water. People must save water for the future generations. Dr JAI PRAKASH GUPTA, Ambala Cantt “Aam admi’s” budget The budget of an aam admi has gone haywire. Prices of vegetables, pulses flour and sugar are skyrocketing. What to talk of the poor people even middle class families are finding it difficult to make both ends meet. The government should take concrete steps to check the price rise of essential commodities. S K MITTAL, Panchkula Avoid fast food More and more people are opting for fast food without understanding its ill- effects. Foods like potato chips, burgers, pizzas and noodles are not at all healthy. Junk food increases the cholesterol level in the body and can also cause diabetes. Children should be discouraged from eating fast food and they must have balanced and nutritious food. JASKIRAT KAUR, SAS Nagar A judge’s worth Undeniably, a judge’s worth has to be judged on the basis of his work (article, “Judges’ assets” by J L Gupta, Nov 10). But it is not, that tales about his wealth are always false. The law cannot permit a person, an intellectual or otherwise, to amass wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.
