3 more students down with H1N1
St John’s closes for a week
Chandigarh, November 17
Three more students, including two from St John’s School, Sector 26, and one from Rayan International, tested positive for H1N1 virus today, making the total number of confirmed swine flu cases in the city rise to 107.

Three Mohali kids test positive
Mohali, November 17
Three more students living in Mohali have been confirmed positive for swine flu. Dr Deepak Bhatia, Punjab nodal officer, said throat swabs of six persons were sent for tests to the PGI, Chandigarh, out of which three tested positive for the virus.

Attendance in schools drops by 30pc
Chandigarh, November 17
With more students falling prey to swine flu, city schools recorded a drop in attendance by 30 per cent today. Parents as a precautionary measure chose to keep their wards at home.

Schoolboy booked for making obscene MMS
Chandigarh, November 17
The police today booked a class 10 student of a government school residing in Ram Darbar on charges of making an obscene MMS clip of a schoolgirl. According to UT SP (City) Madur Verma, a case has been registered against the minor boy under section 67 of the Information Technology Act and section 6 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 after taking a legal opinion.

Seven-year jail term for rape
Chandigarh, November 17
Holding the accused guilty, court of Additional District And Sessions Judge, Ravi Kumar Sondhi today sentenced an accused to seven years of imprisonment for raping a minor girl. The accused, Sonu, was convicted yesterday under Sections 376,366 and 506 of the IPC by the court.

Jan Aushadhi store opens at PGI
To provide medicines at cheaper rates

The first Jan Aushadhi generic drug store was inaugurated at the PGI by Dr Ajay Sehgal, Deputy Director (Admn), PGI, yesterday. The store, which opened in the Old Shopping Centre (behind Oral Health Science Block), Nehru Hospital, would have no holiday.

Having two votes at different places in the subdivision here, Jaswant Singh, the sarpanch of Paragpur village, was suspended on the orders of Mohali SDM-cum-District Election Tribunal Officer Raghubir Kaur Khaira while Bakshish Singh, who had lost the panchayat elections earlier, has been elected as the new Sarpanch.

Woman’s Death
Husband jailed for two years

The court of District and Sessions Judge Gopal Krishan Dheer today sentenced a man to two-and-a-half years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 for abetting his wife to commit suicide. He acquitted three other members of his family in the case.

Five hurt in road mishap
Zirakpur, November 17
Five persons were seriously injured in a road accident on the Ambala-Chandigarh highway near Silver City here this evening. The incident took place around 7 pm when a jeep owned by a private bank rammed into a Tractor-trolley from behind. The tractor trolley was coming towards Chandigarh from Dera Bassi.

Merchant Navy officer killed in accident
Fatehgarh Sahib, November 17
A Merchant Navy officer was killed in an accident late last night near Chunni village. Officer Kanwarjit Singh Sidhu (30), a resident of Chandigarh, was coming from Fatehgarh Sahib in his Opel Astra car at around 11.30 pm when the car had a head-on collision with a Trax Jeep.

Six held for posing as eunuchs
Zirakpur, November 17
Six persons, who were impersonating as eunuchs, were rounded up by the local police from Exchange Colony in Zirakpur. They were demanding money from a resident of the area for some function in the latter’s family.

Sewerage work nearing completion: MC chief

The work of sewerage laying in Zirakpur is 90 per cent complete and the work of drainage system has started, said district planning board chairman and president of Zirakpur MC, Narinder Kumar Sharma at a meeting in the MC office here today. Sharma also inspected ongoing development work in different wards of the town and instructed the officials to expedite work in the area while keeping quality in mind.

Man falls off train, injured
Kalka, November 17
An unidentified man, aged around 40 years old, lost his legs under a train on Monday night. Official sources in the Govt Railway Police (GRP), Kalka, said the incident took place when the man fell from the Kalka-Howrah train while trying to descend from the train after it rolled out of the Kalka railway station at 11.45 pm.

Woman dies of burn injuries
Kharar, November 17
A woman, identified as Sita, was charred to death when her bed caught fire last night in Desu Majra village. In his statement to the police, the deceased husband, Ramvir, told the police that he worked at a nursery in Chandigarh and used to live with his family at Desu Majra.

The health department today took samples from various eating joints in the district. Health department officials said samples of refined oil had been taken from Sirhind, samples of namkeen and jam were taken from Bassi Pathana, desi ghee and ketchup samples from Nogawan and cheese samples were taken from Verka in Fatehgarh Sahib.

Lawyers up against ‘judge-son nexus’

The Punjab and Haryana High Court advocates do not want judges with practising sons and relatives to stay in the same court. In a requisition believed to have been signed by over 800 advocates and passed by the Bar Association, the advocates have asserted: “To check the growth of judge-son/relative nexus syndrome, those judges be transferred immediately whose sons/relatives are practising in the high court.”

HC jolt for male health guides

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has held that the Centre’s communication against discontinuation of “male health guides” schemes in different states and union territories is “not enforceable as a right”.

Three convicted of murder
Chandigarh, November 17
A local court today convicted three accused on charges of murdering a youth on February 4, 2007, under Section 302 of the IPC. Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Raj Shekhar Attri today convicted Yashpal, Rakesh and Vikas of murdering 19-year-old Bajinder Singh, son of a tea vendor, to death in broad daylight at the Palsora Colony.

1 killed in road mishap
Chandigarh, November 17
A 40-year-old Panchkula-based liquor contractor was killed in an accident near Kalagram here last night. According to the police, victim Roopak Datta of Sector 16, Panchkula, was returning home in his Maruti car from Chandigarh.

One booked for rape attempt
Mohali, November 17
The Mohali police has booked a Sector 71 resident for allegedly trying to outrage the modesty of a Ludhiana-based girl who had come to the town to attend the birthday party of her niece.

Four injured in scuffle
Panchkula, November 17
Four persons were admitted with stab injuries in General Hospital after they attacked each other in Sector 20 here today. The injured were identified as Nitin, Saurabh both brothers, Asim and his father Vinod who were out of danger, said the doctors.
