14-year-old girl raped, murdered Jalandhar, November 11 The assailants chopped
off her legs and tried to burn the body in an attempt to destroy evidence. The police has been working on many theories to find out the motive behind the crime. The possibility of a love affair between the girl and some boy of the locality is also being probed. The incident came to light when villagers noticed stray dogs devouring the body parts lying in a plot of Green Avenue Colony this morning. They informed Sarpanch Gulzari Lal and subsequently the police was called. Talking to The Tribune, SP (City-I) S.P. Kalia said the parents of the girl, identified as Sunaina, a Class IX student of Government School, Qadian, had lodged a report, saying that she left for her friend Mamta’s house at Nalhan village at about 4.30 pm but did not return. When family members reached Mamta’s house in search of Sunaina, they reportedly found it locked. The SP claimed that after getting news of the recovery of a girl’s body, the parents were called for identification. Her mother, Manjit, who is working with a private hospital at Wariana village, identified the body. The body has been sent to the local Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. A case of murder under section 302 of the IPC has been registered at police station Division No 5. The SP said the police had launched a hunt to nab the suspects. The police had not found the weapons used in the crime. Sources revealed that certain family members of Mamta have been rounded up for questioning. There are apprehensions that Sunaina had gone to meet her boyfriend instead of Mamta’s place.
Stray dogs dig up child’s body Stray dogs today dug up a child’s body from a burial spot in the Basti Gujan cremation ground and ripped it apart. Basti resident Desh Raj noticed a herd of stray dogs fighting for the body in the cremation ground following which he called his neighbours. Residents rushed to the spot and shooed away the dogs. They also pulled up the caretaker of the cremation ground for his negligence. The body was later buried again. |

Salesmen robbed of Rs 90,000 at gunpoint Jalandhar, November 11 Eyewitnesses revealed that three youths with muffled faces reached the filling station owned by Jatinder Khaira and indulged in a scuffle with salesmen Santosh and Pappu. While two of the miscreants managed to overpower the salesmen, the third snatched away a bag, containing money, from them. One of the robbers fired three shots before fleeing the scene, claimed the victims. The salesmen, however, escaped unhurt as the hurried shooter missed the target. The robbers left a motorcycle (black Pulsar PB-08-AP-1738) behind. Two of them disappeared in the streets behind the petrol pump while the third ran away towards Hoshiarpur, on the road. Hoshiarpur: Fake travel agents duped Mohan Singh of Chagran of Rs 9 lakh in the name of sending his grandson to the UK. Three killed, two hurt in mishaps Hoshiarpur, November 11 According to police sources, Jit Ram of Handowal died on the spot when a Tata-407 truck (HP-29-2675) hit him while he, along with Pritam Singh of Raja Kalan, was standing on the roadside with his scooter (PB-07-8875) near Jian village last evening. The Sadar police has booked truck driver Avtar Singh of Hussainpur under sections 304-A, 279, 338 and 427 of the IPC. In another accident, a youth died on the spot when an unidentified vehicle hit him near Jian village. The Sadar police registered a case in this connection. Nawanshahr: Driver of a Tata-709 vehicle Vijay Kumar was killed on the spot and two other persons, Kuldip Singh, owner of the Tata 709, and Mohinder Singh, driver of an oil-tanker, were injured in a head-on collision between the two vehicles near Mahalon village on the Nawanshahr-Jalandhar highway here this morning. Residents of nearby villages reportedly took out the victims from the badly crushed vehicles. The traffic remained disrupted on the main road for about two hours. |

Signature drive against NC president Phagwara, November 11 On the condition of anonymity, one BJP councillor said here yesterday that memorandums were being sent to the higher authorities, including the Vigilance Bureau, the Director and the Deputy Director of the Local Bodies, besides the Local Bodies Minister, to hold a vigilance enquiry into the irregularities in allotting tenders of several development projects. The BJP-led Nagar Council has been formed in Phagwara for the first time, but it seems to be in deep trouble due to this development. It is learnt that the dissident councillors are preparing to bring a no-confidence motion against Duggal. Despite repeated attempts Duggal could not be contacted for comments. The BJP has nine seats in the NC, the SAD four, the Congress six, the BSP two and six are Independents. |

RBI exhibition for students on Nov 14 Jalandhar, November 11 Shyamala Gopinath, Deputy Governor, RBI, will inaugurate the exhibition, being organised as a part of the RBI’s outreach programme in the platinum jubilee year 2009-10. The objective is to create awareness among students regarding liberalised Foreign Exchange Regulations and facilities available to them from banks, including educational loans, foreign currency remittances abroad, etc. The British Council, Chandigarh, is also participating in the exhibition that is being held for the first time in India. |
