Jalandhar
Training session:
The Commissioner, Jalandhar division, S.R. Ladhar, inaugurated the training session of the first batch of representatives of Panchayati Raj organisations and local bodies at the office of Director, Land Record, here on Wednesday. While addressing the members of panchayats and local bodies of Adampur block, Ladhar said feedback would be sought from panchayat members regarding different ongoing welfare schemes and the feedback would be forwarded to the state government.

Price rise: Left parties rally
: More than 100 activists of Left organisations, including CPI and CPM, organised a rally and demonstration against the price rise and alleged anti-people policies of the state and Union governments at Labour Shed Chowk here today. Addressing the rally, Harbhajan Singh Marimegha, state leader of the CPI, said the wrong economic policies of the Union Government were responsible for the increase in the prices of essential commodities.

: “Navrang-2009”, silver jubilee celebrations of DRV DAV Centenary College, culminated today. Fancy dress competition, variety show and award-giving ceremony were organised. Justice of Peace, UK, J.S. Kooner, was the chief guest and R.K. Sethi, Deputy Vice-President, Capital Local Area Bank, was the guest of honour in the morning session.

Silver jubilee
: The three-day silver jubilee celebrations of Baba Gurmukh Singh Uttam Singh Senior Secondary School, Khadur Sahib, 24 km from here, ended today. Students of the school presented cultural programme. Students were awarded for their achievement in sports and academics.Former Principals and former students were also honoured. Gurdial Singh Gill, Principal of the school, presented a vote 
of thanks.

Wheat seed
: Rajiv Jain, state media in charge of the BJP, today expressed concern over the shortage of wheat seed for farmers. In a statement here today, he said that looting of 200 quintals of wheat seed by farmers at Tohana in Hisar district reflected the desperation among the farmers. He asked why the authorities had not lifted wheat seed from Lucknow despite directions from the National Seed Corporation.

: While addressing a meeting of revenue officers of the district here on Monday, Deputy Commissioner Nandita Gupta asked them to ensure that they performed their duties and responsibilities with full dedication and commitment. She also told them to take complaints of public immediately and redress them promptly with honesty so that the common man didn’t suffer.

New tariff plan
: BSNL has started a new tariff plan for pre-paid customers for 3G services in Hamirpur. Giving this information to media here on Monday, general manger of the BSNL Issam Singh said a special tariff for two months would be charged to popularise the schemes which had many features like voice call, fast internet services and downloading facility at very low rates and TV on demand with 62 channels. He said special tariff for customers was being offered to create public awareness about the 3G services and existing 2G customers could also switch over to 3G services.

Girl ends life: A girl reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself on Tuesday. The police said the girl, Vandana Rana (19), was suffering from some kidney disease and ended her life in her house.

2 held with charas
: The police on Tuesday arrested two persons, Jatinder Singh and Jabar Singh, both belonging to Sangrur district of Punjab, under the NDPS Act after recovering 1.4 kg charas - 1 kg from Jatinder and 400 gm from Jabar - when they were on their way from Pandoh side towards Mandi. According to the police, a naka had been put up at the Bindrbani barrier on the highway when the two were caught.

Jammu
Govt sets up flying squads
: In order to curb the menace of hoarding, black-marketing and over-charging, the state government has constituted flying squads for Srinagar and Jammu. An official statement issued here said the squads would be headed by the respective Deputy Directors, (Enforcement) of the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) Department.The SHO concerned would provide police assistance.

Awareness camp for farmers: An awareness camp for farmers was held on Wednesday in the Pouni area of Reasi district in which more than 100 farmers of the district participated. It was organised in connection with the Rashtriya Krishi Vigyan Yojna programme in which experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dera Baba, delivered lecturers.

Hostelers get relief
: An amount of Rs 6.47 lakh was disbursed among the affected hostel students of Sheikh-ul-Alam Boys Hostel, which was gutted on October 17. The cheques were given by VC Riyaz Punjabi.
