Managed to flee after they were abducted and taken to Jammu Jalandhar, November 7 Identified as Akash and Arpit, the boys reached Jalandhar on a train late last night. They then contacted certain followers of the baba here. Getting the information, mediapersons also reached the station. The boys allegedly they were abducted by certain persons from the Agra-based Ashram while they were playing cricket. The boys said they were drugged by certain members of a mafia active in human organ trade and were being taken to Jammu. They claimed to have heard the abductors in Jammu and managed to escape. Meanwhile, the district police has established contact with the counterpart in Agra to verify facts whether the boys actually belonged to the ashram. The boys are in the custody of the police. Cong leader’s son caught selling spurious seed Jalandhar, November 7 Avinash, along with his three accomplices, including Gurmukh Singh, Sukhdev Pal and Sandeep, was nabbed during a raid on Sampooran Cold Storage by a police team led by DSP Balkar Singh. The police conducted the raid after District Mandi Officer (DMO) Sarabjit Singh submitted a complaint in this regard. A first information report (FIR) was registered against the four accused under sections 420 and 142, IPC, after their arrest on Friday. The accused were remanded in two-day police custody when they were produced in a local court today. The arrest of the four persons is significant as there were reports of supply of spurious potato seed from Punjab to West Bengal in the recent past. Reputed potato growers had met the authorities concerned requesting them to check sale of spurious potato seed as its continuance would have brought bad name for Punjab. In the meantime, this correspondent tried to contact DMO Sarabjit Singh to get more information about the suspected role of the accused in supplying spurious potato seed to other states of the country, including West Bengal, but he could not be contacted as his mobile phone was switched off. The DMO was also not available at his local residence as he had gone to Chandigarh for some work. Meanwhile, several startling revelations are expected during interrogation by the district police during the remand of the accused. |

2 brothers among 4 killed in mishaps Tarn Taran, November 7 According to the information received here today, three motor cycle-borne youths were killed on the spot and their fourth companion was seriously injured last night when the motor cycle was hit by some unidentified vehicle near Naushehra Pannuan, 14 km from here. The deceased have been identified as Jaimal Singh (25), Karamjit Singh (17) and Prabhjit Singh (16), residents of Dhotian village. All four were coming to the grain market at Naushehra Pannuan from Dhotian on a motor cycle (PB-46D-5245). Injured Sukhwinder has been admitted in a hospital where his condition was said to be out of danger. A case under sections 304-A, 279, 427, 337 and 338, IPC, has been registered at Sarhali police station. The post-mortem examination on the three bodies was conducted at the Civil Hospital. In another incident Kashmir Kaur (35) of Mehmoodpur village, 40 km from here, was crushed to death by a tractor-trailer last late evening. |

College Development Council to take up issue with VC Kusum Arora Tribune News Service Jalandhar, November 7 The meeting would be presided over by Vice-Chancellor Dr A.S. Brar. The principals and the faculty members of the affected colleges have been demanding scrapping of three cultural items - one-act play, group bhajan and bhangra - owing to the alleged partiality during the festival. Talking to The Tribune, Lyallpur Khalsa College Principal Dr Jaspal Singh Randhawa, also a member of the College Development Council, said they would definitely raise the issue with the VC. “Apart from the university agenda, we will discuss the issue with the VC,” he said. He added that the malpractice should be brought to an end as students were being cheated under the garb of youth festivals. “The university authorities had done videography of the festival and it should be probed,” he said. University Registrar Dr Inderjeet Singh said the colleges should bring this matter to the notice of the VC. “The colleges should talk to the higher authorities as this is injustice in the name of healthy competition,” he said. |
