Airport Express Line
Special Metro trains to run at 135 km/hour
Akhila Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 5
The most ambitious and expensive project of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Airport Express Line would open right before the Commonwealth Games by September 2010.

The Metro officials today said more than 90 per cent of civil work was over on the line that would take travellers

from New Delhi station to airport Terminal 3 in flat 18 minutes.

“The work on express line has reached advance stage. One of our main stations Shivaji Stadium is almost ready for the Air India to take over and start constructing their part of the project,” said Mangu Singh, director (works), DMRC.

Special trains would be procured for the purpose. These trains would run at a speed of 135 km per hour and also have half coaches reserved for baggage. The trains have been specially designed to support high speed.

The DMRC would also put screen doors on the platforms to protect the waiting passengers from the impact of high speed trains.

Total money spent on the project is around Rs 4,500 crore, half of which is being incurred by DMRC and the other half would be borne by the operators, Reliance and Spanish company CAFF.

There would be total six stations on the lines and one station in Dwarka Sector 21 would be placed after the airport

Terminal 3. Other stations on the line are New Delhi, Shivaji Stadium, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi Aerocity on NH 8 and IGI Airport.

The city air terminals would be at three locations featuring baggage check-in facility for air travellers at New Delhi station along with multi-level parking and integration with Metro and Indian Railways.

The second station Shivaji Stadium would have baggage check-in. The third station at Dhaula Kuan would have passenger check-in, though there is no provision for baggage check-in.

There has been no consensus between the DMRC and private airways on the security issues pertaining to DMRC’s check-in facility. The DMRC officials said talks were on regarding the matter.

Explaining the whole procedure of baggage check-in, Mangu Singh said the facility was only provided for the out-bound passengers. After being checked in at the city stations, the bags would be stuffed in containers which would then be sealed and loaded on trains taking them to airport, he said.

“The movement area of the baggage on its way to the air platforms would be totally sanitized. No outsiders would be allowed in this area so that there is no scope for any security breach,” said Mangu Singh.

Almost 40 meters below ground, Shivaji Stadium Metro station would have three floors, a mezzanine, a concourse and the platforms. After it gets ready, the station would look like a mini airport.

“The mezzanine floor would be reserved for commercial activity and would have a shopping complex. The concourse would have the check-in counters,” said PK Garg, site in-charge for the Shivaji Stadium Metro station.

The station is being constructed in a joint venture of both DMRC and Air India. DMRC would develop the three underground floors of the station and the rest of the building and offices would be developed by Air India over ground.

Initially, there would be eight trains running on the line at an interval of 10 minutes.

The fares for the express line would be much higher than the regular Metro trains. The maximum fares fixed by the DMRC from New Delhi to Airport and from Dwarka to Airport are Rs 150 and Rs 30 respectively.

Parmindar Singh

Noida, November 5
Following the DTC, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) had revised the fare structure effective from today. The hike range is from 55 per cent to 118 per cent on Delhi routes.

UPSRTC (Noida) assistant regional manager P.R. Belwariar said: “The corporation has decided to charge Uttar Pradesh fare tariff in the U.P. areas and Delhi tariff in its areas as per the revised structure. However, there is no hike for local routes connecting various sectors.”

From Noida to Kashmiri Gate and from Noida to New Delhi Railway Station, commuters will have to shell out Rs 24 instead of Rs 11.

“Earlier, my monthly expenses for conveyance were Rs 660 that will increase to Rs 1,440, which means I will have to spend Rs 780 extra each month,” Lakhan, a factory worker, said.

He said: “My salary is Rs 5,000. Rising prices of essential commodities have upset my budget. I have requested the employer to hike the salary else I will be looking for a job near the house.”

Residents of Greater Noida, too, will have to shell out Rs 1,080 extra per month from Kasna to Dhaula Kuan, as fare has been hiked from Rs 20 to Rs 38.

Noida Entrepreneur Association president Rakesh Katyal said: “Hike is unjustified and factory workers will be worst affected. The state government should reconsider the fare structure.”

Trade Fair: China the focus country
Syed Ali Ahmed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 5
The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) today announced to make China a focus country and Thailand a partner country in the 29th India International Trade Fair (IITF) to be started from November 14. The fair will end on November 27.

The trade fair will be inaugurated by President Pratibha Singh Patil, informed Dr Subas Pani, chairman and managing director, ITPO.

The theme of the fair will be export services of India. With the current rate of growth in services exports, India’s services will be close to $11 billion by 2012 overtaking the expected level of merchandise export of $305 billion, he said.

Addressing a conference, Dr Pani said that China was made a focus country as it had a developed and influential market economy. It had grown to become the world’s second largest economy after the US in terms of the gross domestic product (GDP). The high growth rate of China is attributed to high levels of trade and greater investment efforts. Strong exports growth from China has helped pushed its economy to 9.1 per cent rate in 2003-2004.

He also pointed out that China was the world’s largest recipient of the foreign direct investment (FDI).

Addressing the media, Dr Pani said that Thailand was made partner country as it was an emerging economy and considered a newly industrialized country.

When asked how much business he expected this year, Dr Pani said that it was difficult to estimate it due to world economic slowdown, but it would be better this year as India’s condition was comparatively better.

Delhi is a partner state and Uttarakhand is a focus state. Delhi is the second Asian city after Kuala Lumpur which would be hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

New Delhi, November 5
In a strange incident raising questions over Commonwealth Games security, documents concerning security during the Games have allegedly been stolen from the Commonwealth Games office (CWG).

Documents and data concerned were kept in a car parked in the level-2 of the CWG office, near Jantar Mantar.

The car belonged to a junior rank officer in the security department of the CWG. The officer said the stereo of the car was also missing. “Though an FIR has been lodged about the missing stereo, no complaint about the documents has been filed yet,” he said.

According to a CWG official, the documents consisted information regarding the security plan of the Games and some data related to the ongoing construction of CWG sites.

According to sources, the police is suspecting the role of an insider. “The level-2 parking is safe and no outside vehicle is allowed there. This theft indicates the involvement of an employee of the organisation,” said the officer.

However, the CWG officials and Delhi police have denied any such incident on their premises. “No such incident has happened. This is a high-security area and no such lapse can take place, especially in our office,” one of the CWG officials said.

the police refused to confirm about any FIR lodged in this regard. “We have not received any such complaint,” a police officer said. The CWG office is a high-security zone with CCTV cameras installed all over the area. Theft from the premises came as a jolt for security arrangements, that too, before the crucial mega event.

Delhi meat traders call off strike

New Delhi, November 5
Nearly a fortnight after they began their stir, meat traders in the capital called off their strike today. According to Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain, the traders will move to the new slaughterhouse in Ghazipur “as soon as it is practically possible”.

The traders’ strike began soon after the centuries-old abattoir near the walled city was closed down on October 22 after a five-year legal battle between the MCD and the meat traders’ association.

The meat traders refused to move to the new hi-tech slaughterhouse in Ghazipur, which has been criticised because it is next to a sanitary landfill site and a stinking drain. They also met Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit yesterday.

However, after continuing their strike for 12 days, they called off the strike today. The mayor said: “The meat traders called off their strike today. We told them we will do our best to solve the matter.”

“I will meet the traders Nov 10 to discuss their various problems,” said Kanwar Sain. “The Ghazipur slaughter house is ready. The meat traders will shift to the new slaughter house and start working there as soon as it will be practically possible,” he added. — IANS
