Mumbai take hefty lead
Chandigarh, November 5
Ramesh Powar, we all knew, is no rabbit with the bat. We knew that he was a dangerous floater batting down the order. What, however, the diminutive offie proved today is that he could be dangerous with the bat. With the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match poised, more or less, evenly at close yesterday, Powar came out today and batted like a seasoned campaigner tilting the scales heavily in favour of Mumbai on the penultimate day of the four-day match.
Stocky Powar gave an impressive display of attack as well as defence and scrored an unbeaten 125, enabling Mumbai gain vital 212-run first innings lead.

INDIA-OZ ODI Series
India lose thriller
Sachin makes 175, breaks 17,000 run barrier

Hyderabad, November 5
Sachin Tendulkar produced a breathtaking 175 to very nearly take India to a sensational win in a nerve-wrecking fifth cricket one-dayer against Australia but the hosts flaundered in the dying stages to succumb to a three-run defeat and give the visitors a 3-2 lead in the series. Chasing Australia’s mammoth 350 for four, built mainly around Shaun Marsh’s 112 and Shane Watson’s 93, the Indians rode on Tendulkar’s heroic 141 ball knock to come within sniffing distance of a remarkable win but the tailenders faltered under pressure to be all out for 347 with two balls to spare.

It was a remarkable exhibition of strokeplay by Tendulkar, who not only notched up his 45th ODI hundred but also became the first cricketer in the history of the game to cross the 17,000 run mark. It was also the fastest century by an Indian against the Australians as well as the highest individual score against the visitors.

The jam-packed Rajiv Gandhi International stadium witnessed an extraordinary contest which saw as many as 697 runs being scored in a game which fortunes fluctuated from one end to the other till the very end. The two teams will now travel to Guwahati for the sixth one-dayer to be held on Sunday.

Tendulkar was at his ominous best from the onset as he clobbered the Australian attack to all parts of the ground, hitting 19 fours and four sixes. Opening the batting, he first shared 66 runs with Virender Sehwag (38 off 30) and then stitched a vital 137 runs with Suresh Raina, who made a run-a-ball 59, for the fifth wicket in exactly 19 overs to power India to the victory.

But Tendulkar’s dismissal in the first ball of the 48th over, caught when he played the scoop shot at fine leg by a diving Nathan Huaritz, unhinged the Indian innings as the remaining tail-end batsmen proved unequal to the task of scoring 19 runs in 17 balls. Ravindra Jadeja (23) and Praveen Kumar (9) were run out, while Ashish Nehra fell for one as India slid to defeat from 299 for four in the 43rd over.

The Indian innings was floundering at 162 for four when Tendulkar was joined by Raina and their excellent stand for the fifth wicket brought India on the doorsteps of victory, but it was not to be. Except for Sehwag and Tendulkar, the Indian top order failed as Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni departed cheaply to leave Tendulkar with the huge task of guiding India past the finishing line. — PTI

The visitors declared their innings closed at 471 for nine.

With Mumbai finishing at 244 for 7 at close yesterday and all recognised batsmen, barring Khanvilkar, back in the pavilion, one expected the innings to fold somewhere around the 300-run mark.

But Powar and Khanvilkar had other designs. Mixing caution with attack, they kept on amassing runs.

Khanvilkar also proved a stubborn customer as both never lost out on any opportunity to score runs. Punjab seamers toiled hard without much success. Khanvilkar and Powar added 163 for the eighth-wicket stand. Leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, who had dropped Powar twice when he was getting closer to the three-figure mark, made amends by earning the first success of the day, trapping Khanvilkar lbw when the batsman was nearing the three-figure mark.

Khanvilkar scored 87. Going strong at the other end, Powar did not let fall of wicket disturb the momentum. In the company of Zaheer Khan he continued to bat in the same fashion. Both added 53 crucial runs to the total before Zaheer was dismissed after contributing 18-ball 17.

Dhawal Kulkarni joined Powar at this stage as the innings declared closed just before the tea break by skipper Wasim Jaffer with 212-run overall lead. Ravi Inder, who made a century in the first innings, and wicketkeeper batsman Uday Kaul steadied the Punjab ship after the early fall of opener Sunny Sohal in the third over of the innings. At draw of stumps, the hosts were 55 for the loss of one wicket.

WGC-HSBC Champions Event
Randhawa tied 9th

Shanghai, November 5
Next year’s European Tour card in his pocket and a huge burden off his shoulders, Jyoti Randhawa carded a sparkling four-under 68 to lie tied ninth even though none of his compatriots could manage sub-par cards in the first round of the WGC-HSBC Champions golf tournament here today.

Among others, top ranked Indian Jeev Milkha Singh carded one-over 73 to lie tied 48th, while youngsters C Muniyappa and Gaganjeet Bhullar shared the 57th place at two-over 74 in the USD seven million event.

American Nick Watney, a two-time winner on the US PGA Tour, upstaged the stars with a course-record equalling eight-under 64 to grab the lead but world number one Tiger Woods was lurking three shots back at the Sheshan International Golf Club here.

Randhawa went into the tournament not in the best of form and the 2002 Asia number one was particularly unhappy with his swing. “I got my swing back into the groove after a long time and it felt good. I putted well, just coming in I wished I made a few more putts as the greens were fast and true but it's the best that I've hit it in the past two or three months. I’m really happy,” said Randhawa.

Entering the week in 115th place on the European Tour, Randhawa knows that his card will be locked up after this week’s event which has no halfway cut and that allowed him to play with a free mind. “It was at the back of my mind and not being able to swing the way I wanted to plays on your mind. Right now, I’m really comfortable and I’ve got my card for next year. I’ll try to freewheel it this week and hope it works. I’m feeling good,” he said. — PTI
