Series lead at stake
Hyderabad, November 4 The Indians, seeking to dethrone Australia from the number one spot in world rankings, will be strengthened by the expected return of Gautam Gambhir, who had to skip last match due to a neck injury. Although the left-hander Gambhir’s presence will lend solidity to the top order, the worrying factor for the hosts has been the lack of good starts in the series so far. Clearly the onus is on the Indian batsmen to deliver the goods on a track which according to the curator has plenty of runs to offer but will also aid the bowlers. Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar have put on stands of 25, 21, 37 and 40, and the home team would be hoping this can be extended to something closer to the hundred mark which would be the ideal platform for Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni and Raina to launch a blitz later on. Tendulkar is on the verge of reaching another milestone in his glittering career as he is just seven runs short of touching the 17,000 run-mark and the champion batsman would take inspiration from the moment to score big. While the Indians have their task cut out for the flood-lit encounter the Aussies have been grappling with a spate of injury problems ever since the series began. The latest to join the casualty list is Peter Siddle, who has returned home because of a side-strain. They have already lost the services of pace spearhead Brett lee, stumper Tim Paine, and all-rounder James Hopes. Moises to return home Nursing a hamstring injury, Moises Henriques today became the latest Australian to return home midway through the India tour and the beleaguered visitors inducted Victorian all-rounder Andrew McDonald and New South Wales fast bowler Burt Cockley to prop up the depleted side. — PTI |
Fresh RCA elections on December 7
Jaipur, November 4 While issuing an order in this regard on Tuesday, a three-member panel formed by the Supreme Court also appointed former SC judge Justice NM Kasliwal as the poll observer. However, confusion still prevails over the voting rights of the individual members of the RCA. Though the Supreme Court has allowed them to vote in these elections, it is not clear whether their votes would be sealed, as they were in the past, or not. The individual members of the RCA had exercised their franchise in the last two elections but their votes were not counted. As per the state’s Sports Ordinance, only the district associations can vote in the RCA elections. The Supreme Court has authorised the ad-hoc committee, which was set up by the state government on October 20 to look after the RCA affairs, to conduct the election process. According to sources, the notice for fresh RCA elections may be issued in second week of November. Meanwhile, reacting to the SC order, IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi said he hasn’t taken any decision regarding contesting the RCA elections. He blamed the infighting in the RCA for the current state of affairs in the state’s cricketing body. Former RCA secretary Kishore Rungta hoped that with the Supreme Court giving individual members the right to vote the RCA elections would be free and fair. Rajendra Singh Rathore, who is heading pro-Modi faction in the RCA, said the elections will usher in stability in the RCA and strengthen democracy in the sports body. The RCA will be going to polls for the second time in 9 months. Earlier, IAS Sanjay Dixit had defeated Modi in a keenly contested election on March 1. Though the RCA executive was chosen for the term of four years, the office-bearers fell out within a few months, leading to the cricketing body’s division into two factions. Much to the chagrin of cricket lovers, the RCA infighting cost Jaipur not one but various opportunities to host major cricketing events like two ODIs, World Cup 2011 matches and IPL Season 3 ties. The RCA feud also proved dear to the state’s cricketers who were refused participation in various national events, as the two warring factions had sent separate teams. |
Ranji trophy
Chandigarh, November 4 Mumbai’s
Abhishek Nayar played the role akin to Goni’s for the hosts, though
with a better luck. He came up with a fine half century as Mumbai, in
pursuit of Punjab’s first innings total of 259, were 244 for 7 at
close on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Elite Group A
match at the Sector 16 cricket stadium here today. Similarities
do not end here. Love Ablish, Punjab seamer, produced the spell almost
identical to Ajit Agarkar’s yesterday. As wiry Mumbai seamer Agarkar
finished with the creditable four-wicket haul not conceding too many
runs, Ablish also, by the time the day’s play came to a halt, had four
wickets in his kitty which went a long way in halting Mumbai’s
progress. Punjab’s innings folded after the addition of 17 runs to
the overnight score, at 259 when Zaheer Khan scalped Goni when the
batsman had made 41. Ablish settled into a nice groove straightway. He
struck in his first over sending back former India opener and Mumbai
skipper Wasim Jaffer after had just got off the mark with a boundary.
Immediately thereafter, he removed Ajinkya Rahane, former India-19
player, having him caught behind when the batsman had yet to settle
down. Kukreja and Rohit Sharma tried to retrieve the situation. When
Rohit looked like settling down, Ablish struck again cutting short Rohit’s
innings. Rohit, who till recently was a member of India ODI squad,
scored 25. After the fall of this wicket, Kukreja found a resolute ally
in Nayar. Both the batsmen complimented each other well. Nayar and
Kukreja both played some sweetly timed strokes. They added 115 runs for
the fourth-wicket stand before Nayar became Goni’s first victim.
During his 92-ball 53 knock, Nahar struck eight fours. From here on,
the visitors lost next three wickets in quick succession to lose
whatever initiative they had gained. Ablish claimed his fourth wicket
when he finally removed stubborn Kukreja when the batsman was closing in
on the three-figure mark. Kukreja edged an Ablish delivery to be taken
gladly by Uday Kaul behind the stumps. Kukreja’s 90-run knock was
studded with 14 hits to the fence. Sunny shines for Haryana
Sunny
Singh carried on from where he left last night and bludgeoned the Madhya
Pradesh bowling into submission. His innings of 312 was studded with 38
fours and 7 sixes and came at an astonishing strike rate of 90.70 runs
per 100 balls. Haryana finished their inning with 546 all out in 143
overs. Sunny is the first batsman for Haryana to score above 300 runs in
an inning. Scoreboard

Jeev, Bhullar to lead Indian challenge
Donald Banerjee
Chandigarh, November 4 The $70 lakh event will feature golfing superstars such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington,Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Geoff Ogilvy and Yang Yong-eun. Jyoti Randhawa and C. Muniyappa will be the other Indians rubbing shoulders with the top 78 professionals most of whom have been winners on the six major tours across the globe over the past one year. The 21-year-old Gaganjeet Bhullar is the youngest among the Indians to book his ticket to the showpice event with his triumph at the Indonesia President Invitational (Asian Tour) in July 2009, while Chandigarh’s Jeev Milkha Singh made it to Asia’s first WGC event courtesy of a victory at the Japan Golf Tour’s Nippon Series JT Cup in Tokyo last December. Jyoti Randhawa secured his berth as a result of his win at the Asian Tour’s Singha Thailand Open at Phuket earlier this year, while C. Muniyappa earned a slot thanks to his landmark victory at the Indian Open (Asian Tour) last month. Professional Golf Tour of India Director Padamjit Sandhu said, “This is a very proud moment for Indian professional golf. The consolidated efforts of our tour and event partners are helping take Indian professional golf to the next level and we are confident the momentum will continue.” |
Parvez speaks out with his game
Srinagar, November 4 His coach Abdul Qayoom told The Tribune over phone from Jodhpur on Tuesday, where his team will play its next match with Rajasthan, that Rasool’s performance in the ongoing CK Naidu trophy is a silver lining amidst otherwise disappointing performance by his team. They lost to Karnataka in Banaglore despite managing a lead in first innings and then lost their next match in Mumbai. However, Rasool scored a fifty soon after he was released by cops for lack of evidence and scored two consecutive fifties in Mumbai and took four wickets. The news that the forensic report of his kit has given him a clean chit holds a symbolic consolation for him and his team, who are in Jodhpur presently preparing for their next match. “I am happy and relieved,” he said. “I was discriminated against and felt traumatised for days thinking why me. God has helped me heal myself and let my bat do the talking,” he said. With the forensic report clearing the last of doubts, everybody who knows him feels vindicated. “He was never those types whom you can link with something fishy. His pursuit of cricket was single-minded and all he dreams is be a good all-rounder and play for his country,” Hamid, who has played with him, said. |

Tewari to take up Jarkhar stadium issue with SAI
Ludhiana, November 4 Inaugurating the Punjab Kabbadi Championship at the Jarkhar sports stadium, Tewari said he was impressed with the efforts of the local people in building such a good infrastructure in the village. He promised that he would ensure at his own level that the stadium has the best of facilities. The Congress leader said it was a matter of great satisfaction that Jarkhar Sports Academy was promoting the game of hockey in a big way by providing training to young and budding players. “These efforts will bear fruit and hockey will regain its lost glory in this region,” he said. Responding to the demand for cash insistence by the local people, Tewari assured that he would do his best in all possible manners. |
