90 IP power station staff seek VRS
New Delhi, October 28 The Delhi government in its cabinet meeting sometimes back had decided to close the power station on the grounds that it was creating pollution as it used coal, a costly venture and that its machines were outdated. The government had announced the land would be used for parking DTC buses. The government had said the power station was established for 25 years and should had been closed in 2001. But it could not be closed because Delhi had scarcity of power. However, the Delhi State Electricity Workers’ Union filed a writ petition in the high court claiming the decision was against an agreement reached among the union, management and the government in 2002. In the agreement, the government had agreed it would not retrench employees of the power station, said union general secretary Kuldip and office secretary Suresh. They said the court had ordered the government to maintain status quo. The sources said the power station was to be closed by October 31, 2009 and the last date for applying for VRS was October 27. According to sources, the IPGCL has 600 employees. The government plans to retrench some and shift the remaining ones to Bawana and Bamnauli power stations. Government sources say the power generation capacity of IGPCL is 247.5 MW, but it produced less than 100 MW. The decision to close the station was taken after the government found substitutes in the form of Dadri and Bawana power stations. Dadri plant would generate 100 MW by November 2009 and Bwana plant would to generate 490 MW by March 2010. HR manager of IGPCL P.K. Rey said he was not authorised to speak on the matter as this was cabinet’s decision. |
Rift over ardaas for riots victims
New Delhi, October 28 President of the All India Riot Victim Relief Committee (AIRVRC) Kuldip Singh Bhogal today alleged that he had sought permission from the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) for performing ardaas at Bala Sahib near Sarai Kale Khan, but the request was turned down. Bhogal, who owes allegiance to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal-led Shriomani Aklai Dal, alleged that the request had been turned down as DSGMC chief Paramjit Singh Sarna feared that committee members might speak against the Congress party during the ardaas. Sarna, on the other hand, denied that the AIRVRC had approached him on the subject, and said that the DSGMC had decided to organise an ardaas on November 2 at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj located near Parliament. This is not the first time that differences have emerged within the community over a sensitive matter like the anti-Sikh riots. In the past, people within the community, some of whom are ideologically more in line with the SAD, have been critical of Sarna. On the other hand, Sarna, who has held sway over the cash-rich DSGMC, takes a middle path. Some 3,000 Sikhs had died in the riots and the Congress-led UPA government had paid compensation to the victims following the tabling of the Justice Nanavati Commission report. |

Opening a new chapter in
life of the disabled via sports
New Delhi, October 28 Anchored by the Special Olympics Bharat (SOB) in collaboration with the Delhi government and the ministry of youth affairs and sports, the five-day extravaganza, which was flagged off today at Airforce Sports Complex,
Palam, would see players from five countries—Sri lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and India, the host. In total, eight teams would be participating in the tourney, including four from the host India—Delhi, North and Central, East and North-East and South. Another team from China couldn’t make to the show for want of visa. The objectives behind the Special Olympics are to affect a change in the mindset of people at large and nurture hidden talents among intellectually challenged people, particularly children. “It is seen that healthy people commonly challenge them by calling them insane, handicapped etc. But, as a matter of fact, they are more determined, and warrant only special attention,” said Harpreet Singh, manager organisational development of Special Olympics, Asia Pacific, (SOAP).
Joginder Bedi (21), with right hand and leg disability due to cerebral palsy, is employed with SOAP as a front desk manager. At the exhibition match today, he displayed a great show and would captain the Delhi team. In fact, “disability can be an ability” and can act as a strong propeller for potential. Twenty-two- year-old Jyotsna
Kalra, a resident of Ashok Nagar in Delhi, is an exemplary example of it. She won three medals—two silvers and one bronze for skating—in the Special Olympics held in China in 2007.
Jyotsna’s performance match with that of any physically sound athletes who have won accolades at various Olympics. “I completed my training for skating before the Olympics in one month, and after winning the medal, I was complimented by my parents. Well done! They said,” she said enthusiastically. She studies at the Tamanna Special School, Vasant

Murder Case: Ex-MLA chargesheeted
New Delhi, October 28 “I am satisfied that a prima facie case is made out against all six accused under various provisions of the IPC,” additional sessions judge O.P.Saini said. Initially, former Samajwadi Party MLA and eight others were arraigned as accused for killing Rakesh Pandey, a witness in a triple murder case against them, on February 17, 2003, at Sant Ravidas Nagar district near Varanasi. The victim, who had refused to accept Rs 5 lakh for not deposing in the triple murder case, was threatened and later shot dead at the behest of the accused leader. Three accused, Santosh Kumar Singh, Vinod Kumar Singh and Bashir Khan, died during the trial while the fourth one Kallu was declared a proclaimed offender after he went absconding. The case was transferred to the national Capital from UP by the Supreme Court on March 28, 2008, on the ground that a fair trial was not possible against the accused leader. While shifting the trial, the apex court considered the fact that the former MLA allegedly killed a person who was to depose against him. The court has fixed the matter on November 23 for recording evidence of prosecution witnesses, signalling the start of trial. |
