2 eunuchs murdered at home
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 20
Two eunuchs were found dead at their house in the Jamia Nagar area of southeast Delhi today afternoon. According to information, Vimlesh, alias Guruji (46), and Meena (30) were discovered dead when some of their colleagues came to visit them and found foul smell emanating from the locked house.

The victims stayed in house number P-90 in the Shaheen Bagh area of Jamia Nagar. The driver of Guruji, Sultan, and her adopted son Nadeem are missing. According to police, the bodies have been sent for post-mortem to AIIMS and the exact time of deaths would be known only after the report arrives. However, the police suspects that the duo was killed at least some 30 to 40 hours ago, probably sometime on Sunday night.

“Vimlesh’s body was found on the first floor of the house with his throat slit, while Meena’s body was found on the ground floor. The killers probably caught them unaware and used a sharp-edged knife to slit their throats,” said a police official.

The bodies were discovered around 3 pm when Reena and one another eunuch came to the victims’ house. “The two eunuchs had come yesterday also, but returned after finding the house locked. However, since Vimlesh was not answering his phone, the duo came looking for him today again. According to them, while trying to peek inside the house through the kitchen ventilation, they sensed foul smell and then informed the police,” said an official.

The lock of the house was broken by the police in the presence of witnesses, after which, the bodies were discovered.

A case of murder has been lodged at the Jamia Nagar police station and further investigations are on.

According to the police, robbery could be one of the reasons behind the murders. “Eunuchs generally collect huge sums of money during Karva Chauth and Divali. Since Vimlesh was the head of the eunuchs of the area, and according to her colleagues, the money was kept in her house there is a probability that robbery could be the reason behind the murders. As of now the missing driver is the prime suspect,” said an official.

However, the amount of cash and the exact value of the goods missing from the house could not be ascertained, but it is believed to be at least few lakhs. Meanwhile, the police has not ruled out personal rivalry or enmity behind the murder. “The locals had often complained about the nuisance created by the eunuchs here and had even opposed their buying a house here. We are investigating from all angles and will reach the criminals very soon,” added the official.

greater noida, October 20
A five-year-old boy was strangulated in Charauli village under Javer Kotwali area. It is suspected that a neighbour had killed the child as an offering under the influence of a tantric. The child’s body was recovered from the house of the neighbour.

The police has booked two brothers for murder and further investigations are on. The motive of the crime will become clear only after receiving the postmortem report, police said.

Five-year-old Dhiraj, son of Murli, had gone missing while playing in front of neighbour Dalip’s house at 9 a.m. on Monday in Charauli village. After some time, the family members started looking for the child in the village. Some people told Murli that they had seen the child going into Dalip’s house.

Finding his house locked, people peeped from the window and saw part of Dhiraj’s body. As the villagers went inside the house after breaking the lock on the door, they were shocked to see that the body bore many signs of injuries and cotton had been stuffed into his mouth so that he could not shout for help.

The police came promptly after being informed and took possession of the body.

Villagers said a day earlier, a tantric had visited Dalip’s house and advised him to make a sacrificial offer of a child. Murli’s younger brother Jai Chand lodged a murder report naming Dilip and his brother Khem Chand.

SP Rural, Surinder Kumar Verma said there was no proof that the child had been killed on tantric’s advice. However, the brothers have been booked for murder.

93 inmates die in Dasna Jail since 1997

Ghaziabad, October 20
The death of Ashutosh Asthana, the prime accused-cum-witness in a corruption case involving judges, in Dasna Jail here is the latest of the 93 mysterious deaths of inmates, including those involved in high-profile crimes, since 1997.

Regarding Asthana’s death, district MMG Hospital superintendent AK Singh said his body became bluish that suggested the consumption of poisonous substance.

He said whether it was a suicide attempt or the poison was administered to him was a case of micro-analysis.

Former Bar Association president Nahar Singh Yadav moved the apex court to stop the district administration from cremating the body, but he was late since Asthana’s last rites were held on Sunday.

The jail has seen nine such deaths in 10 months this year, including Frontier Mail blast accused Shakeel, who committed suicide by hanging self from a window by his shirt. A magisterial inquiry ruled out security lapses.

The jail recorded four deaths in 2008, nine in 2007 and eight in 2006.

Ravinder Pradhan, the main accused in the Prof Kavita Chaudhary murder case, died due to consumption of glass pieces in the jail.

However, jail superintendent VK Singh said Pradhan might have consumed the glass pieces during childhood and it could have resulted in the fatality later.

Similarly, several other inmates, wanted in cases like Qamaruddin, Iqbal Singh, Jiji Hasan, Guru Jan Singh, Noor Hasan and Thakur Singh also died in mysterious circumstances in the jail.

However, inquiries conducted into their deaths exonerated the jail administration and found no loopholes in the prison’s security. IANS

Ghazipur abattoir poorly equipped, say butchers
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 20
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) attempt to close down slaughterhouses located in the Idgah area seems to get difficult with time.

According to various associations of slaughter houses, they are not willing to shift to the newly-built abattoir at Ghazipur, as it is unable to meet their requirements.

They said they would meet Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and Lt Governor in this regard and

“The corporation has given the new abattoir at Ghazipur to a private company, the owner of which is an exporter of animals, and at times, refuses to slaughter our animals,” Kishan Lal, president, Jhatka Association, said.

He said the new slaughter house could slaughter only 3,000 animals in an eight-hour shift whereas the demand was nearly 10,000 animals per day.

“The officers concerned said they would start a second shift at the new abattoir, but would also be of no use for it would become difficult for the local shopkeepers to carry the slaughtered carcasses to their shops in the evening,” said Nawab-uddin, Buffalo Trade Welfare Association.

The Supreme Court today refused to stay the closure notices issued by the MCD to the slaughter houses of Id-gah area. The corporation had asked them to shift operations to Ghazipur by October 21. In retaliation, the slaughter house owners challenged the closure notices asking them to shift to the modern slaughter house in Supreme Court.

“There is no arrangement for processing the guts and intestines of animals that become the raw material for making threads used for operations,” said Mohammad Aquil Qureshi, president, Delhi Meat Merchants’ Association. He said the abattoir did not provide the facility for keeping the stock of tons of hides and skins of sheep and buffaloes. Also, there was no provision for keeping the unsold stock of live animals, he added.

Though the ‘jhatka’ and buffalo sections of the Id-gah slaughter house have been shifted, the ‘halal’ section was yet to be closed due to opposition from a section of meat-sellers. The civic body had announced last week that the ‘halal’ section would be closed down on October 21.

Earlier, the legislative wing of the MCD had requested the municipal commissioner to defer the plan to close down the slaughter house at Id-gah in a month in view of the Id-ud Zuha in November. Id-ud Zuha or Baqr-Id is on November 28 and the councilors said the shifting date would be deferred till then, but no action was taken.

Blood-stained cricket bat used in the commission of crime and clothes of the accused have also been recovered.

According to police, the investigative team after the close examination of the spot believed that some known person or relative might be involved in the brutal murder.

The team members started collecting information about the suspect.

They came to know that during the last rites of the woman, her nephew Bunty had not turned up and was also absconding from his house in Meerut.

Acting on a tip-off, the police caught Bunty on October 16 from near Race Course, Meerut Cantt area and interrogated him in detail.

He confessed to the crime.

During sustained interrogation, Bunty broke down and disclosed that he was unemployed and used to come to Delhi to borrow money from his uncle and aunt.

He had also come on October 4, 5 and 6.

During these visits, he saw his aunt wearing heavy gold jewellery and planned to loot her.

On October 12, he came to Delhi at around 5 pm.

His aunt was alone at that time and he asked for tea. As she entered the kitchen, the accused started beating her and tried to strangulate her.

Later, he smashed her head with a cricket bat kept nearby. After killing her, he took the jewellery and fled from the spot.

He went to Meerut at night and in the morning sold some ornaments for Rs 49,000 to a local jeweller.

Then he went to Rishikesh and stayed in the Hotel Gaurav and later came to Meerut and stayed in the Hotel Neeraj.

The entries made in those hotels have been matched during investigation. Bharat Aneja is unemployed and a habitual gambler. He is married and has two children.

Woman hangs self

A 32-year-old woman committed suicide last night in the Karala area of outer Delhi.

According to information, Anokhi Devi hanged herself from a ceiling fan of her house in Indira Vihar. Her body was discovered by her husband today morning.

The police said domestic problems over poverty were the likely cause of the extreme step.

“Anokhi Devi was found hanging from a fan inside her house today morning. The post-mortem was conducted at the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. We do not suspect foul play and believe she hanged herself, but will be sure only after post- mortem,” said the police.

Anokhi left behind three children between three and nine years of age.

Now, only 5000 buses to be GPS-enabled
Jyoti Rai
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 20
With the clock ticking on the 2010 Commonwealth countdown, it seems that GPS systems have taken a backseat among all accessories that the new DTC buses are set to have.

While new buses promise mobile recharge vouchers among add-ons, out of 800 new DTC buses on roads, only around 110 on the BRT route have been equipped with the Global Positioning Systems (GPS). The initial proposal mooted to create the GPS-enabled Automatic Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System with Passenger Information System (AVTMPS) on build-operate-transfer basis and planned to include at least 11,000 buses on Delhi roads, including DTC, and private buses.

Interestingly, now the tender is for 5,000 buses only as against the earlier plan for 11,000.

Earlier, a Gurgaon-based firm had backed out from running the GPS service putting the proposal on hold. In a pre-bid meeting that was called last month, around 30 companies came up. DTC officials are optimistic that the system should be in place by the year end.

However, if put in place, the system would facilitate timely travel as LED boards would tell passengers the exact location of a particular bus and the time it will take to reach the stop.

Currently, the buses installed with GPS systems run on the BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand. The control room for the same has been set up at the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) office at ISBT, Kashmiri Gate.

When contacted, DTC officials said installation of the GPS systems was the responsibility of the DIMTS instead of the Delhi Transports Corporation.

Dikshit orders surprise checks at Games sites
Tribune News service

New Delhi, October 20
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has directed senior officers of various departments to make surprise visits to the Commonwealth Games projects sites to monitor the progress of the work. She also asked them to make midnight visits to alert the agencies engaged in the construction work.

Sources in the CM’s office said the instructions were given to ensure the Commonwealth Games Federation that preparations for the Games would be completed in time.

For the Chief Minister, preparations of the Games have become a prestige issue after negative remarks made by some of the members of the Commonwealth Games Federation who reviewed the projects recently.

As various authorities—public works department, Delhi Development Authority, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Corporation– are involved in the construction works related to the Games it is very difficult for a single authority to monitor them.

The Chief Minister asked the senior officers of the departments concerned to monitor the progress of the projects. She also advised them to visit the sites after midnight as at various places the work was being done 24 hours.

The Chief Minister said if any laxity was visible in the work, she would not spare the contractors, sources said.

The directions in this regard were issued last week and thereafter the officers have started visiting the sites after finishing their office work in the evening.

Sources said that the pace of work by the MCD had improved after the officers started visiting sites.

The CM has also asked the citizens to make complaints if they spot potholes, over-flowing drains and non-functional streetlights . She has also started a toll-free helpline for this purpose, the sources said.
