Unitech customers hold protest
Gurgaon, October 8 The customers alleged that the company had failed to deliver its promised housing complex, leaving hundreds of middle-class buyers high and dry. The protesting customers said as per their agreement, the apartments in Unitech Habitat were supposed to be handed over by June this year. “However, not even a single flat has been constructed so far,” alleged a protester, adding that the customers were feeling cheated as neither they could withdraw their money, nor dispose of the apartments as there were no buyers. Raising slogans against the company outside its corporate office, the investors demanded to meet the directors of the project. “We have invested our life’s savings in this project. We were warmly welcomed as potential customers, while now they are refusing even to meet us,” said a local investor in the project. The protesters alleged that they had paid up to 95 per cent of the total cost, yet the project was far from completion. While a few members were let in to meet the company officials, others tried to enter forcibly. The company officials maintained: “Last year due to the extraordinary circumstances, the construction activities on certain projects could not be carried out at the desired pace, because of which there is some delay on the project. But now the construction on the said project has started at full pace and the company will deliever the apartments to the customers as soon as possible. In addition to that, the company is also committed to pay the penalty as per the stated clause in the agreement to all the customers for the delayed period.” |
3 Delhi hospitals to take care of
CWG players, officials: Walia
New Delhi, October 8 The minister today apprised the medical advisor to the Commonwealth Games Dr Jagadisan and his colleague Dr. Manmohan about the preparedness and readiness of the Delhi government to meet the requirements of the Commonwealth Games. She informed the delegates that three hospitals in the Capital have been identified to fulfill the medical needs of the athletes, team officials, technical delegates, and the Games federation. These hospitals are GB Pant Hospital, RML Hospital and Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre at AIIMS. Each of these hospitals will have a secure ward, emergency area, intensive care unit (ICU) beds and 30 beds for the athletes. There will be a polyclinic with ten observation beds at the Games Village. The clinic, which will have two ambulances, would function round the clock. Further, medical centres at stadiums and training venues will also be set up. First- aid posts for spectators at Games venues, hotels for Games officials and accredited media personnel will also be established. The government has also assured upgradation of selected Delhi government hospitals. Walia said that a health action plan implementation committee under the chairmanship of principal secretary, health, was meeting regularly to monitor the activities related to the Games. A Commonwealth Games cell was also functioning under the director, health services, Dr. Praveen Kumar, she added. Walia further informed that officers, doctors and paramedical staff have been trained to meet all the needs of the Games and extend best medical services to the delegates. Traffic snarls hit commuters
New Delhi, October 8 According to traffic police, the delegation was in the city to check the facilities and progress of construction work at stadiums and Games Village. As a result, several roads in the New Delhi area were blocked. Although the diversion and stoppage were for a short time, they led to traffic snarls in various parts. According to information, the commuting time on several roads stretched from 30 minutes to an hour for a 10-minute drive. “I was stuck near Bhairon Marg for almost 40 minutes in the morning. As a result, I was late to office on Ashoka Road. One of my colleagues coming from Patparganj was also stuck in the jam for half an hour on Minto Road,” said Shekhar Singh, an employee with a postal department. According to another commuter, traffic jam was witnessed all along Ring Road in south Delhi from Nehru Place to AIIMS flyover. “I did not read the newspaper and was caught unawares in a jam near South Extension. The traffic seemed to be stationary for kilometers on both the sides,” said Namr Kishore, regional head of an insurance company. However, several commuters also held that they travelled normally and did not face snarls. “If the roads were blocked, I had no clue. I did not come across any obstacles on my way to office in south Delhi,” said Devender Kumar, a government servant. If Delhi traffic police officials are to be believed, there were no major snarls in any part of the Capital. “If there was a jam somewhere, it must be due to excessive flow of traffic. We diverted the traffic only minutes before the delegate buses were to arrive and opened the roads right after they passed. It is wrong to say that the diversion caused traffic jams,” said a senior traffic official from New Delhi district. |

New Delhi, October 8 ASI Bhola Ram suffered head injuries while the driver of the van, Rakesh Yadav, has been arrested and sent to jail. According to information, Bhola Ram, posted at Rohini traffic circle, was on duty in Mangolpuri last night. He had stopped the speeding van just before the red lights and demanded papers from the driver. “As the driver Rakesh came out of the vehicle, the ASI found him drunk and cut a challan for drunken driving. This seemed to have infuriated Rakesh who attacked the ASI,” said a police official from Mangolpuri police station. He revealed that the burly Rakesh brutally hit the ASI. Ghandy’s custody extended
New Delhi, October 8 The court accepted the police plea that more time was needed to interrogate Ghandy about the missing hard disk of his laptop. Delivering the order, chief metropolitan magistrate Kaveri Baweja sent the 59-year-old Maoist leader to police remand till October 15. Public prosecutor Naveen Kumar had, however, pleaded before the court to extend Ghandy’s police custody by 10 days. The prosecution said that it needed Ghandy’s custody as some raids had to be conducted. Opposing the extension of remand, Gandhy’s counsel Vishal Gosain said the charges leveled against Gandhy were “mere speculation”. The police had sought Ghandy’s custody on the grounds that he was needed for unearthing the “whole conspiracy” related to Maoist activities in Delhi. Earlier, Ghandy was brought in a special bullet and mine-proof vehicle
‘Rakshak’. His name figures on the list of the three top Maoist leaders whose release was sought by the Maoists in exchange of the abducted Jharkhand police officer Francis
Induwar, who was later beheaded by the banned outfit. On October 5, Ghandy was sent to three days’ police custody. The police had alleged that Gandhy was arrested under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (prevention) Act for being a member of the banned terror
organisation. He was residing at a rented accommodation in south Delhi and trying to set up Maoist base in the Capital, the police claimed. The police claimed to have recovered materials, including CDs and laptop, from
Ghandy, which it used to substantiate its charges that he was actively working for the Maoists.
Ghandy allegedly used nine fake names, including Dilip Patel, Narsi,
Arvind, Rajan, Katif Ansari and others, to hide his identity. A very senior leader of the
organisation, Ghandy was in-charge of expanding the proscribed organisation’s influence in urban areas. He was arrested on September 21 by the special cell of the Delhi police. He later claimed that he was suffering from prostate cancer and had cardiac problems and was referred to
G.B. Pant Hospital and LNJP Hospital by the court. Ghandy, who studied in the Doon School and the Cambridge University, joined the CPI (M) politburo in 2007. |
Spurious refined oil unit detected in Dadri
Greater Noida, October 8 The factory has allegedly produced 60,000 litres of artificial refined oil worth Rs 60 lakh during the past five years. The oil was reportedly, sold in wrappers of well-known refined oil brands throughout the NCR, including Delhi. The samples lifted from the factory have been sent for laboratory test to Lucknow. The police has sealed the factory and arrested its owner, Ramesh. Few wrappers of vegetable oil that proved fake vansapati oil was also being manufactured in the factory have been seized. Dadri SDM Somya Srivastava said the authorities had raided the premises on a tip off that M/s Kapil Kumar & Bros in Nyadar Ganj had been allegedly manufacturing spurious refined oil. A raid was conducted and Ramesh was arrested. Over 2,000 litre of spurious refined oil was found in wrappers and packages of well-known brands. The wrappers included those of Deepak, Sher Mark, Kamal, Swaad, Goldy, Tip Top, Saraswati, Paras and Gulab. Raw material, including chemicals, essence, packing material and some gadgets were also seized. The SDM said Ramesh had not got any brand registered. Ramesh told the police that small shopkeepers were also involved in this illegal activity. Spurious refined oil was sold at concessional rate to small traders who used to make huge profit out of it. |
JNU students march against fee hike, fund cuts
New Delhi, October 8 The students also march to the office of MHRD and submitted a memorandum in this regard. In the memorandum submitted today, the students union pointed out, “In 2009-10, of the total budget amounting to Rs 11 lakh crore, higher education received a pittance of Rs 15,429 crore– a mere 1.5 per cent. The gross enrolment ratio in higher education in india hovers around 10 per cent as opposed to the global average of 26 per cent.” It added, “Per student annual expenditure on higher education in India is one of the lowest in the world and the government is doing nothing to lift it.” Stating that the present offensive on higher education is being sold under the garb of “austerity”, JNUSU general secretary Pallavi Deka said, “The education sector does not have funds to indulge in unnecessary extravaganza. It is the fundamental right of and every citizen.” Supporting her point, Mobeen Alam, JNUSU joint secretary, said, “We are aware that the real problem is not the lack of funds but misplaced priorities.” JNUSU president Sandeep Singh said, “It is not just a shameful blueprint of denying access to quality education to millions of poor students, but also an attempt to snatch away whatever little that exists today.” A student said, “There are many students at JNU who find it difficult to sustain themselves on the fellowships they receive. We cannot bear any hike in fee.” JNUSU vice-president Shephalika Shekhar said, “Hike in tuition and hostel fee, user charges for electricity and water would mean that JNU like other universities would become unaffordable and inaccessible to a number of students. It must be opposed.” |
Illegal tanneries polluting groundwater
Greater Noida, October 8 The tannery shops are violating all laws while removing the skin of dead animals. After peeling off the skin, the carcasses of animals are dumped in ditches or sprinkled with acid and buried. This is polluting the ground water in the area. Factories in Surajpur industrial area have dug up hundreds of ditches on their premises to dispose of the carcasses of animals. Strong foul odour emanates from these factories making it difficult for residents of the nearby areas. Residents of the area are sick of the tanneries, but the district administration police, health department and pollution control board officials, it appears, are oblivious to the menace. The worst part is that the units, which are violating the orders of the Supreme Court, are functioning in the district headquarters itself. According to the Supreme Court directions, only pollution-free industrial units are allowed to function in this area. As per the pollution norms fixed for the national capital region (NCR), no industrial unit which pollutes air, water or soil or which adversely affects the health of human beings should be allowed to function in the region. The pollution control board is supposed to inspect such factories and companies periodically to assess the extent of pollution done by them. The board has not permitted any tannery unit to function in the area. Even the laws of the Noida and Greater Noida Authorities forbid setting up of tannery units in the area. |
