Duminy spits Venom, bites RCB
Bangalore, October 8 Earlier in the day, Robin Uthappa and Ross Taylor made quickfire fifties to power Royal Challengers Bangalore to a formidable 180 for five in the opening Group C match of the inaugural Champions League cricket tournament here today. Uthappa made a brisk 51 off 39 balls at the top, while Taylor scored an unbeaten 53 off 24 deliveries in the middle to take Royal Challengers to the 180 mark. Electing to bat first, the Challengers had a cautious start to their innings and it took a smart shot from Jacques Kallis to bring the first boundary in the second over. However, Kallis couldn’t stay long and perished in the next over after he edged Charl Langeveldt to Ryan Canning as Challengers reduced to 14 for one in three overs. Rahul Dravid and Uthappa rode on luck to pick up 50 runs off 37 balls as the Challengers crossed the fifty mark in 7.5 overs. Uthappa, who was dropped once at 18, made the most out of the opportunity and sent the bowlers for a leather hunt. Claude Henderson was introduced into the attack in the 10th over and Uthappa gretted him with two boundaries. The right-hander was at his ominous best as he despatched Monde Zondeki for two sixes in the next over before Herschelle Gibs had to pull out a blinder at point to remove Uthappa. He struck seven fours and two sixes in his blistering knock. Experienced Dravid made 28 from 24 balls before he was run out. Virat Kohli played a 14-ball 17 run innings before he was stumped by Canning off Henderson. But Taylor had other plans as he hammered the Cobra bowlers to all parks of the ground and alogwith young Manish Pandey put on 65 runs for the fifth wicket in less than five overs to power Bangalore to the formidable score. — PTI Scoreboard Royal Challengers Bangalore Kallis c Canning b Langeveldt 8(9) Uthappa c Gibbs b Zondeki 51(39) Dravid run out 28(24) Kohli st Canning b Henderson 17(14) Taylor not out 53(24) Pandey not out 10 (10) Extras (lb 4, w 9) 13 Total (4 wickets; 20 overs) 180 FoW: 1-14, 2-82, 3-97, 4-115. Sodhi, Bipul sign for Kings XI
Chandigarh, October 8 Reetinder Sodhi, who was in sensational form during the recently-concluded JP Atray Tournament, has represented the Indian team in all age groups i.e. the under 19 and under 15 and has even done a stint with the senior national team. He also represented Chandigarh Lions and Ahmedabad Rockets in the ICL. Bipul Sharma is another talented left handed all rounder, who has played for the North Zone in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy and Punjab, before playing for the Chandigarh Lions in the ICL. “Punjab is my home state and I am looking forward to cash in on this great opportunity to prove my ability. Playing alongside the likes of Yuvraj Singh will definitely be fruitful,” said Reetinder Sodhi while talking to The Tribune. Announcing the new additions, Tom Moody, coach KXIP said, “As we reload for season 3, the availability of ICL players has given all franchises a great opportunity to strengthen their squads. As part of a winning preparation, one of the areas we needed to bolster was our middle order, pack in more all-rounders and encourage world class fielding. Both Sodhi and Sharma support our requirements simply and perfectly.” |
Daredevils look for winning start
New Delhi, October 8 Daredevils, led by Gautam Gambhir, had a hectic workout under lights this evening, though Virender Sehwag, after leading Rest of India to victory in the Irani Trophy, joined the team late. The visitors practised at the main ground, while Daredevils used the side ground. The Australian team seemed to enjoy the expansive field at the Ferozeshah Kotla. Though Daredevils have fortified their team with the induction of Glenn McGrath in place of the injured Paul Collingwood, they suffered a major setback ahead of the opening match when Daniel Vettori was replaced by Yogesh Nagar. Vettori will miss Daredevils' opening match, due to a hamstring injury suffered during the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa. South African Ab de Villers was the first to pull out due to injury. But new captain Gautam Gambhir was confident that Delhi Daredevils will pull of a victory in their opening contest. “We would leave no stone unturned to put up a good performance”, he said. With Gambhir and Sehwag leading the pack, Daredevils have a good batting lineup, and their bowling will be competently handled by McGreth, Dirk Nannes and Company. For Gambhir, he could not have asked for a better opening than a home match at his favourite Ferozehsah Kotla ground. Meanwhile, another Australian speedster, Brett Lee, in a media interaction, said he would be as fiery as he ever was, and he had no plans to cut pace to prolong his career. Brett Lee’s forte is not just sheer speed, but swing and controlled pace, to get wickets, though his consistently high potent bowling performances had put him out of action often, due to injuries, which include four ankle surgeries. The 32-year-old Australian pacer, who will play for New South Wales in the Champions League, missed the entire Ashes series due to a rib injury. But he still will not compromise on his pace. “I enjoy bowling fast and it means a lot to me to be the world’s fastest bowler. If it happens that I am not clocking 150 kph, then I will think of a Plan B”. He said fast bowling was a “tough trade, as it’s the hardest job in the world.” “But the rewards are also very satisfying as the wickets nowadays are conducive for fast bowling”, he added. |

Gurgaon, October 8 Korean Lee Sung is in outright second after firing a 65, while India’s C Muniyappa and Jason King from Australia both shot 66. Sweden’s Daniel Chopra, South African Keith Horne and Unho Park from Australia all carded 67s. “It is my best round on the Asian Tour so I am delighted. I have been hitting the ball really well this year but the results have not been there. I played great in the Dunhill last week but it was just not really happening in terms of scoring. I knew if I kept patient it would come,” said Blyth, who turned professional in 2004 and started playing on the Asian Tour the following year. In February, the Australian led the Malaysian Open with one round to go before eventually finishing joint 10th to add another high finish to his impressive record. In 2007, he challenged India’s Gaurav Ghei for the Pine Valley Beijing Open title before finishing second, his best result on Tour. Lee, the deaf golfer who recorded a popular victory in the 2007 Bangkok Airways Open, also returned a bogey free round and recorded a brilliant back nine of six-under-par 30. US PGA Tour star Chopra, one of the pre-tournament favourites was happy with his opening salvo especially as he had to overcome losing his regular caddie, Scott Sajtinac, due to food poisoning. He started on the back nine and made birdies on 12 and 15 but three putted the par-three 16th where his caddie was forced to head back to the clubhouse. “On 16 my caddie fell sick so there was a bit of a distraction. I hit my first putt too hard. Delhi claimed another victim I think. I think it was the sandwich at Delhi Golf Club last night. I ate it as well but I guess my system is more used to it,” said Chopra, who sort the services of a local caddie. He made seven birdies and two bogeys in total to lie well placed in his bid to win India’s national Open for the first time. Chopra was born in Sweden but moved to Delhi when he was seven. Indian Arjun Atwal, who is fighting his way back from injury, came in with a 75 while New Zealand’s Michael Campbell, the 2005 US Open champion, shot a 76. |
RCA STANDOFF Perneet Singh Tribune News Service
Jaipur, October 8 While the faction led by Sanjay Dixit has already started searching for probables for the team, the other faction headed by Rajendra Singh Rathore has made it clear that it will have its own selection committee for the team. The state’s own tournaments are also facing the threat of being split into two. The state’s premier three-day tournament, President’s Cup, will also be played in two different places. On one hand, Rathore faction proclaimed that the tournament will be played in Jaipur. Shiv Charan Mali, who was appointed as the acting president by Dixit, announced that the tournament will be played in Jodhpur. As a result of the internal bickering, the contesting teams for the tournament will also be different at these venues. The Rathore faction has announced that Nagaur, Ganganagar and Sikar will compete for the President’s Cup in Jaipur. However, the Dixit faction has declared that Barmer, Pali and Bikaner will clash for the title in Jodhpur. Meanwhile, making the first move to save cricket in Rajasthan ever since the infighting broke out in the RCA, the state government has constituted an organising committee, comprising sports minister Mangilal Garasia, sports secretary BB Mohanti, former international and national cricketers. The panel will make a last ditch endeavour to bring back the India-Australia ODI, scheduled for October 25, to Jaipur. The match was shifted to Vadodara due to feud in the RCA. The state government has already opened channels of communication with the BCCI in this regard. Mohanti has also shot off a missive to BCCI president Shashank Manohar for the India-Australia ODI. In his letter, Mohanti stated that the state government has formed an organizing committee for successful organization of international matches. The panel will fully cooperate with the BCCI in holding the match. He said, “We are determined to hold the international cricket matches in Jaipur. The state government does not want to lose any other match scheduled for Jaipur due to infighting in the RCA.” The state government’s move is being seen as a clear indication to the BCCI that it should not shift any other international match from Jaipur due to ongoing tussle in the RCA. |

ICC suspends WADA’s whereabouts clause
Johannesburg, October 8 The ICC will soon discuss the code with WADA and in a Board meeting scheduled three months from now, it will decide whether to implement the code or not. Until then, the ICC will continue testing players without using the contentious clause. The clause requires players to give their whereabout details a month in advance for out of competition testing and the Indian players have opposed it, saying it infringes on their privacy and poses a threat to their security. The Indian Board (BCCI) has also backed the players and has reportedly got support from its counterparts in Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The BCCI wants the ICC to either persuade WADA to scrap the clause or make a cricket-specific code. Asked about the latest on row, ICC President David Morgan said, “The doping question is best described as a work in progress. We will have further meetings with WADA and we hope to have a situation that is acceptable to WADA and all the cricket-playing nations.”
