The Congress has identified Madkola, Jeeta Khedi, Aroli, Kot, Nangal Jat, Andhop, Manpur, Uttawal, Badah Maheshpur. Hathin assembly segment has good chunk of Meo Muslims. Majority of the voters in many of the villages identified by the Congress are Meo-dominated. Delhi schools prepare for grading system
New Delhi, October 7 The CBSE will conduct workshops for teachers and principals in Delhi from October 13 to 15 and October 21 to 23. Over 1,000 teachers and principals will attend the workshop. Principal of Delhi Public School D.R. Saini said, “We have followed the directions issued by the CBSE chairman on bringing about the transition. We have implemented the grading system in our school, but it is yet to be implemented comprehensively. I along with two other teachers will attend a CBSE workshop on October 22, where we will be trained about the system. We will also be provided with the guidelines to implement the system.” He added, “After the workshop, we will implement the grading system, comprehensively and train other teachers.” CBSE sources said, “In the first phase, approximately 90 teachers and principals from across the country will be trained about various aspects of the comprehensive evaluation scheme. We have just begun the process and teachers who are being trained on various aspects of the grading system are expected to go back to their schools and train other teachers.” The workshops deal with how to implement CCE system in schools. The grading system under CCE replaces the Class X board results, which have become optional and will be implemented from the 2009-10 session. According to the CCE pattern, children studying in Class IX will be graded at the end of the year and Class X students will have the option of not sitting for the board examination. Atika, a DPS teacher, shared, “This batch of Class IX will be examined on the new pattern, with the grading system, and Class X students will have no exams next year.” According to CBSE sources, “Teachers participating in the workshop will be provided with a training manual, instructive CD and Powerpoint presentations to equip them train other teachers once they return to their schools. Also, over the next three months, over 10,000 schools across the country are expected to implement the grading system.” |
JNU students to strike over
fund cut notice
New Delhi, October 7 Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have called for a total strike against the “shameful blueprint denying access to higher education to poor students” tomorrow. They would also hold a demonstration at MHRD office. They alleged that the circular meant a cut in funds for seminars, conferences and immediate check on recruitment along with retrenchment of contract workers. A large number of students marched against the issue on the university campus last night. The executive council meeting has been scheduled for October 12. “Forget about making higher education more accessible, the MHRD is trying to snatch whatever less students have today,” said Sandeep, JNUSU president. “The biggest impact would be on students. The government expects us to bear 20 per cent of the total university cost and pay for all basic facilities,” said Shephalika Shekhar, vice-president, JNUSU. She further alleged, “This is a politically-driven move to turn every institution of higher learning into an exclusive enclave of the rich and the privileged.” Students alleged, “The UPA has been peddling its agenda to privatise universities through various committees like the Knowledge Commission, Yashpal Committee recommendations and 100 days agenda of the ministry.” Taking a dig at the austerity drive of the UPA government, Sandeep said, “To all those who are preaching austerity to the country, we would like to reiterate that education is not extravagant like five star hotels. It is a fundamental right.” Students said the problem lied in the priorities of the government. “While defence gets a whopping 16.3 per cent of the total budgetary allocation, higher education gets a pittance of mere 1.5 per cent. This speaks volumes about the UPA government’s priority, particularly when the number of people to access higher education is low,” he said. |
What rehabilitation, say residents of Kathputli Colony
New Delhi, October 7 “Well, some people did come to the colony and take photographs of our house and asked my husband some questions. They were saying something about shifting us to a place temporarily and then to a better house. But I am worried...what if we don’t get a house?” she asked. As per the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) slum makeover plan, the Kathputli Colony - a west Delhi shantytown which derives its name from of roadside artists, musicians, puppeteers and others resident there - will be given a makeover and its residents rehabilitated. Real estate firm Raheja Developers has got the Rs 6.11 crore-contract to rehabilitate the residents. Manoj Goyal, general manager of the firm, said: “Next week, the DDA will allot an alternative site to us for the temporary accommodation of the residents of the colony. “This site, which will be within a distance of two kilometres from the Kathputli colony, will be developed by us for the temporary staying arrangements. It will take us three-four months to do that,” said Goyal. Under the contract, after the transit camps are ready, people of the colony will be shifted there and Raheja Developers will start the construction of flats in the colony. “We will construct 2,800 flats in 10-storey buildings in the colony. Each flat will be of 30-37 sq metres. Not just that, we will also make a school, a dispensary, banquet halls and parking space,” Goyal said. “The DDA has made a list of those who have been living in the colony for a long time and given them tokens, on the basis of which these flats will be allotted,” Goyal said. In return, Raheja Developers will get 10 per cent of the land on which they will build commercial establishments like offices and shops. “We expect the rehabilitation work on the colony to begin by March 2010 and to complete it by March 2012,” said Goyal. However, despite his claims that the move has been heartily welcomed by all of the colony’s inhabitants, a number of the residents still seem to have no clue about it. “If it’s a better life they are promising us, I hope it’s true. ,” Rameshwari Devi said. |
Govt promoting
ayurveda, says Sheila
New Delhi, October 7 Speaking at the inauguration of All India Ayurvedic centenary celebrations, Dikshit said Ayurveda was not less important than other systems. There was a time when even surgeries were undertaken in Ayurveda. She stressed upon the need of an elaborate research in Ayurveda to establish authenticity of Ayurvedic medicines, which were cheaper than other medicines. These medicines do not have any side-effects, as they do not contain any chemical. She added the city government had been focusing on the promotion of Ayurveda. The government would commission an Ayurvedic medicine and research centre at Khera Dabar on 90 acres. The project would cost Rs 1.5 crore. The institute would also develop a large herbal garden. Delhi finance and urban development minister Dr A.K. Walia was also present. He said even other countries were also accepting Ayurveda. |
Sheila flayed over control room for civic amenities
New Delhi, October 7 Saying that civic amenities were the primary job of the
MCD, he alleged that the Chief Minister had started the control room to interfere in the civic body’s functioning. “The power-drunk Chief Minister has forgotten that the MCD is an autonomous body, which has been created by an act of Parliament. It is solely responsible for providing redressal to the grievances of citizens in its areas,” Subhash Arya said. The MCD has already set up effective redressal machinery through a network of control rooms that work 24 hours all 365 days. He warned that the Congress government in Delhi should desist from such “unauthorised and illegal” interference in the functioning of the municipal body. If the Chief Minister did not desist from her habit of interference, municipal councillors would have to come to the streets. Instead of interfering in the MCD’s working, the government should concentrate on food adulteration cases. There is adulteration in sweets and during Divali it can turn into a major issue in Delhi. The food adulteration checking department is lying
paralysed. People do not know where to make a complaint against suspects in food adulteration cases. Hoarding of essential commodities is another such issue that has become a challenge, as it is leading to price rise affecting the daily life of residents, he said. |

Diwali: 24-hour helpline for burn injuries
New Delhi, October 7 To be launched by Delhi-based plastic surgeon Anup Dhir, the helpline 09312377554, will put one through to the doctor himself. “Ninety-five per cent of burns are accidental. And 80 per cent of burn victims are women and children because these accidents often happen at home. With a little care therefore these accidents can be avoided,” Dhir, a senior consultant of plastic surgery at Apollo hospital, said. Further, when the injuries are on the face, hands or arms, 40 per cent of the burns are on children below the age of 14. “Lighting a fire cracker may seem very easy and fun but if one is not careful it can cause serious damage. One should never attempt to re-light a dud because it can go off. You should douse it with water instead,” Dhir advised. One should not carry fire crackers in their pockets because they are explosives and may go off prematurely even without being lit, he added. “Also most of us ignore the instructions on firecracker packets. This may be a no-brainer, but can help you prevent a mistake nonetheless,” Dhir said. Debunking misconceptions on certain traditional first aid given to burn injuries, Dhir said: “You should hold the burn area under running water which is cool, not cold and not use ice since that will take the wound longer to heal. Also one shouldn’t use ghee on the burn area as it increases the risk of infection.” The 24-hour helpline will start functioning on October 13 and will be operational for eight days. Diwali will be celebrated on October 17. — IANS |
NREGA not benefiting single women: Activists
New Delhi, October 7 The point came out today during a discussion here on the occasion of the launch of the National Forum for Single Women’s Rights. Member of the Planning Commission Sayeeda Hameed said, “Exclusion of single women from one of the important poverty alleviation programmes of the country will amount to undermining the objective of the Eleventh Five Year Plan of inclusive growth.” Hameed recommended that the scheme should adopt new guidelines to ensure that single women get their entitlement. Affirming the point, Kiran Bhatty, who has been closely associated with the NREGA programme, stated that in most parts of India women were denied job cards on the ground that they were “dependent”. That is the reason why social activists across the country were demanding that they be treated as “independent households”. Talking about widows, Girija Vyas, chairperson, National Commission for Women, said, “Widows constitute 33 per cent of women who experience sexual harassment, but when it comes to basic indicators like access to food and healthcare, they are even worse.” Vyas announced that the National Commission for Women would ask the government to introduce specific plans and programmes for single women and find ways to provide employment to them. She added, “The commission is committed to reviewing and expanding the legislation on women’s right to property and ensuring that women inherit their share from their parents as well as in-laws.” Another speaker, Sushma Kapoor, deputy director, UNIFEM, exhorted women to use international instruments like the Convention for Elimination of Discrimination against Women to redress the structural and social inequalities that single women face. Earlier, eight single women from Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh symbolically liberated a woman from the confines of swathes of cloth. |
