Kho-kho meet
: Guru Gobind Singh Polytechnic College, Talwandi Sabo, will host the Zonal Polytechnic Kho-Kho meet. It will be inaugurated by Anil Kumar Garg, SDM, Talwandi Sabo, on Thursday. Eleven teams will take part in the meet.

: Market Committee chairman Ashok Jairath distributed cheques worth about Rs 3.80 lakhs on Wednesday to handicapped persons whose limbs were amputated while working on agriculture equipment.

3 booked for cheating
: The Mahilpur police has booked Parminder Kaur and Neeraj Parmar of Panshta, Kapurthala, and Karamjit Singh of Dakoha, Jalandhar, under sections 420 of the IPC. Balkrishan of Binjon village alleged in his complaint that the trio withdrew Rs 6 lakh from his account in the Kot Fatuhi branch of PNB by forging his signature.

Woman killed: Sudesh Kumari of Indira Colony was killed when a motorcycle being driven by Mandip Kumar of  Gobind Nagar hit her scooter while she was going with her daughter near Model Town here on Tuesday evening.

Nurse booked: The police booked a nurse Shushma, resident of Ward No 11, under section 313 of the IPC, sections 23 and 25 of the PNDT Act and sections 5(2) and (3) of the MTP Act for terminating a 10-week-long pregnancy of Naresh Kumari of Ranipur, Pathankot, on Tuesday night. Naresh Kumari stated that she was 10-week pregnant when she suddenly fell ill and her mother took her to Shushma. Shushma charged Rs 5,000 from her mother and aborted the foetus.

Teenager raped
: A teenaged girl was allegedly raped by a youth, Jiwan Kumar, in the fields of nearby Dhuck Pandori village last evening. The victim went to the fields to answer the call of nature. Jiwan reached there and brought her to a house of his uncle forcibly and allegedly raped her. A case under section 376 of the IPC has been registered against Jiwan, who was still at large.

: Punjabi University’s Department of Distance Education is organising a two-day seminar on “India and SADC: Role and Importance of South Africa” on October 9 and 10 in the Senate Hall of the university. SADC (Southern African Development Community) is a representative of 15 South African nations.

2 Corps celebrate raising day
: The 2 Corps celebrated its raising day today with a wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial at Kharga stadium at Ambala Cantonment. The corps celebrated 38 years of its completion.

Body recovered
: The Pinjore police recovered a dead body from Toran village of Pinjore block recently. According to police, the body seemed to be of a man in his 30s. The body has been sent to the Kalka Civil Hospital for autopsy.

Couple shot dead:
A widowed earlier, who had refused the marriage proposal of her brother-in law, and her husband were allegedly shot dead by her brother-in-law from previous marriage in Vijay Nagar locality here today.The deceased identified as Pawan and Sunita had married recently after Sunita’s husband had died due to illness.The accused has also been identified as Pawan, brother-in-law of the woman.Sources said the accused had been feeling offended and unhappy after Sunita married another youth instead of him going against the social customs, in which the widow is married to the brother of the husband.A case has been registered against Pawan and his four accomplices. No arrests had been made so far.

Mason crushed:
Mahesh Dutt (33), a mason from Bhated village, was crushed under the concrete staircase of a store of a house under construction at Bamta village on the outskirts of the town on Tuesday. Reports said an old store building of an LPG gas company was being dismantled for its reconstruction when the accident occurred. The mason, who was working on this staircase, came under it and he died instantaneously.

Education budget hike: The state BJP government is seriously trying to develop the state into an education hub and it was due to this objective that the budget on education was increased by 142 per cent from Rs 231 crore to 597 crore during this year. This was stated by Forest Minister JP Nadda while presiding over the concluding function of the two-day state-level Net Ball championship here on Tuesday. 

NURPUR
One killed:
Pradeep Kumar (24), son of Darshan Lal of Sukhar, died on the spot at Khazan near here on Tuesday evening when he on his scooter was trying to overtake a private bus (HP38-9597). He was run over by the speeding bus. According to police, the bus driver fled after the mishap and a case under has been registered against the accused. The police has impounded the bus.

Elders Day celebrated
: The Jammu chapter of Helpage India has celebrated Elders Day by organising a picnic for elders. The event was organised in collaboration with Jawahar Navodaya Vidhalaya, Nud, on the bank of picturesque Mansar Lake. As many as 20 elderly people and schoolchildren of Jawahar Navodaya Vidhalaya, Nud, participated in an interaction programme held at Mansar. On the occasion, 105-year-old Gauri Saran from Dharin Mehadi village in Katra was honoured by principal of the school Sukhraj Kour in a function held at auditorium. Students presented cultural programmes on the occasion.

One killed in road mishap: One person died on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Wednesday when he was run over by a rashly driven truck. The police said Raj Kumar of Mali Panchari in Udhampur district died near the toll post, Nagrota, when he was run over by a speedy truck. The driver fled from the spot along with the vehicle and is still at large.

Valedictory function held: The Department of Immuno- Haematology and Blood Transfusion Medicine, Government Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, Jammu, on Monday organised a valedictory function of its week-long programme that was held to mark the national Blood Donation Day, which is observed on October 1. Minister for Medical Education RS Chib, who was present on the occasion, honoured at least 45 non-governmental organisations for donating blood. In the function, as many as 12 volunteers were individually commemorated for donating blood more than 30 times in their lifetime.

Kashmir Samiti’s decision hailed: The Panun Kashmir on Tuesday hailed the decision of Kashmir Samiti Delhi in whic they had mentioned that economic and employment package was a fundamental right of the displaced Kashmiri Pandit community and that the economic package and return should be de-linked. According to a statement issued here, the Political Affairs Committee of Panun Kashmir on Tuesday met under the chairmanship of ML Raina, chairman of the committee. It was felt by the members that due to the continuous apathy and neglect by the government all these years of the community’s exile, the Kashmiri Pandits have been subjected to economic and humanitarian hardships.

Seminar on social science:
The two-day national seminar on Social Science Research in Kashmir, which concluded at Kashmir University here on Monday, has resolved that Kashmiri representatives be involved in the Indo-Pak dialogue on Kashmir. Vice-chancellor Riyaz Punjabi presided over the concluding session of the conference organised by the Department of Political Science. The conference resolved that economic model for the development of the state be equitable and address disparities in different regions, maximise employment and eradicate poverty. He impressed upon the researchers to be well equipped with the research methodology and showed a concern for ‘sub-continental deficit’ in Social Science Research.

20 injured in bus accident: A bus carrying 30-odd passeners, mostly from Bandipore, met with an accident today while it was on its way to Srinagar from Bandipore. The police said the bus overturned near Mirgund when the driver lost control over it. Locals said as many as 20 persons were injured, some of them seriously, and were admitted to a hospital. Local MLA Nizamuddin Bhat met the victims at the hospital. He said the rising number of accidents was a matter of concern. He demanded compensation for them from the government.

Dy Speaker of PoK assembly calls on CM: Saleem Bhat, Deputy Speaker of the PoK Assembly, called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here yesterday and remained with him for about 30 minutes. Omar apprised Bhat of developmental projects under execution in the state. The visiting PoK leader showed keen interest in the programme undertaken for the development of roads and the drainage system in the city. Various deputations also called on Omar in the evening.
