Gurgaon: Parties fail to address issues

Gurgaon, October 9
Ever since the winds of development began to sweep this district located in southern Haryana, its residents have been divided into two distinct categories: old Gurgaon and new Gurgaon. As the progress picked up pace, the distinction became clearer and sharper.

As of now, the residents of both “Gurgaons” have their own sets of grievances, but there is nobody they can look up to for their redress.

NAGGING PROBLEM: Traffic jams at (left) National Highway-8 near Gurgaon, and (right ) near the Civil Hospital, Gurgaon.

The residents of old Gurgaon suffer practically everyday due to poor infrastructure, lack of basic civic amenities, grossly insufficient and inefficient public transport, erratic supply of water and electricity, bad roads and sewerage, rampant encroachments and so on.

On the other hand, the denizens of the new Gurgaon city face multifarious problems like nagging traffic jams, parking blues, security concerns and haphazard development etc.

Apart from these, the issue of garbage disposal, besides the deplorable condition of buildings like bus stand, civil hospital, judicial complex and other government offices are common to the residents of both Gurgaons.

Then, the industrialists running units in the Udyog Vihars of Gurgaon have got a plethora of problems.

This despite the fact that Gurgaon contributes as much as 46 per cent of revenue to the state exchequer. Moreover, given the cosmopolitan character of the city, a big chunk of its residents are aware and educated and have a fine understanding of these matters of general concern.

Still, no political party of state government has taken up the cudgels to give Gurgaon its due share in development. Thanks to this, the contrast between the infrastructure developed by private builders and multinational companies and that done by the government bodies is too glaring for anyone to miss.

While the civic bodies like the Gurgaon Municipal Corporation have so far failed to deliver the goods these were meant for, the multiplicity of authority at the local level and callous attitude of the state authorities are there to blame for residents’ woes.

Even this time, no political party has fielded a candidate who seems capable of comprehending the nature of diverse difficulties being faced by the residents of both Gurgaons and putting an end to these.

While the Congress has decided to repeat 77-year-old Dharamvir Gauba as the party nominee, no opposition party has nominated a bankable candidate.

The contest, as on date, seems to be between Gauba and INLD rebel Sukhbir Kataria, who quit his party to enter the poll fray.

Among other prominent candidates, BJP’s Umesh Agarwal, BSP’s Bhim Singh Rathee, HJC’s Kanhaiya Lal Gop and INLD’s M.R.Sharma are also contesting from the seat.

Different residents’ bodies have also joined hands to field R.S.Rathee as their candidate, but RWA candidates have not shown any positive or encouraging results in past.

The residents feel that instead of carving out the Badshahpur constituency from the Gurgaon Assembly segment, old and new Gurgaons should have been made different Assembly constituencies owing to their altogether different characters.

Book tells story of Chetan’s marriage
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 9
Marriages are made in heaven, so are lightning and thunderstorms, says Chetan Bhagat’s latest book, ‘2 states, the story of my marriage’, which was launched today at India International Centre.

The book, which is a story of a couple in love from two different states, was launched by renowned author and union minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor. “Chetan has absolute finger on the pulse of the people he is writing about,” said Tharoor.

“The story is about a young couple who come from two different states of India, deeply in love and want to get married. They face a tough battle to convert their love story into a love marriage for it’s easy to fight and rebel but hard to convince,” said the author.

Rekha Bhagat, Chetan’s mother said that the story is, to an extent, related to Chetan’s personal experiences. “He got married in 1999. It was a love marriage, which successfully happened after a lot of opposition and struggle between the two families,” said Rekha.

Chetan belongs to Delhi, coming from a Punjabi background, while Anusha is a Tamilian with her family settled in Kolkata. “Though I was happy with the relation but my in-laws were strictly in opposition as we have a joint family. The girl’s family didn’t seem much excited either about the marriage as people think that Punjabis are aggressive,” said Chetan’s mother.

Chetan has written about similar kind of conflict and contrast of thoughts, ideologies and cultures in the book.

He said that in India, love marriage is not as simple as it is in any other part of the world.

“In India, it is not only the boy and the girl who are in love, girl’s family also has to love the boy and his family and vice versa,” said Chetan.

While launching the book, Tharoor said that he had far more special reasons to launch the book than the various contrasting similarities he shares with Chetan.

“I have found Chetan’s writing absolutely stunning. He has made English a highly attractive language in fiction writing. He writes a language that speaks and also has the insight into the lives of the character,” said Tharoor.

BJP nominee harps on clean image
Ravi S.Singh
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, October 9
The public meeting of BJP leader L.K.Advani here last evening seemed to have an electrifying effect on the party nominees in this district.

Visibly charged-up, the only BJP’s female nominee, Seema Tirka, contesting from Badkhal assembly segment, has now made the clean image of candidates an electoral issue. Tirka, who is a sitting councillor of Municipal Corporation of Faridabad (MCF), was now canvassing support for herself by harping on her clean image.

Advani, in his speech here, while touching upon the issue of honesty and corruption, said that Haryana had lagged behind in development over the years on account of corrupt practices of the leaders at the helm of government.

Dwelling on the issue, he raised the subject of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and compared the practices of the BJP government in Gujarat where it did not acquire land of the farmers to give it to business houses. Rather, the business houses were to deal directly with the farmers to purchase their land.

The issue of SEZs has been a controversial subject in Haryana and the opponents of the ruling Congress have alleged that the government is siding with the business houses by making land available to them after acquiring it from farmers.

Advani’s speech appears to have affected the BJP nominees in Faridabad district, especially Tirkha. Today, she harped on the issue of honesty and sought to compare herself with her rivals during her campaign.

There appears to be a three-cornered contest among the BJP, the Congress and the BSP.

The nominees of the Congress and the BSP, respectively, Mahender Pratap and Kartar Bhadana, are former ministers of Haryana. Mahender Pratap is also a sitting MLA. Tirkha urges the public not to be misled by the glitz and glamour of the election campaign of her rivals.

Ministers unhappy with CWG delegates’ criticism
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 9
Delhi ministers and MLAs have expressed unhappiness over the negative comments given by some of the visiting delegates of the Commonwealth Games Federation. Brushing aside the negative reviews, the ministers said that they had seen how other countries had hosted the Games earlier, particularly Melbourne, where no special arrangement was made for visitors.

Preferring anonymity, the ministers said Melbourne while hosting the Games had closed only two roads for traffic. Here, the authorities closed all major roads to ensure hassle-free movement of the delegates who visited the various sports venues yesterday.

The ministers said the construction and renovation works were being done speedily and that the venues would be completed within the given time. Also, all the projects had sufficient funds, they added.

Listing the renovation works going on in the city, the ministers said that the outer and inner circles of Rajiv Chowk were being renovated by the New Delhi Municipal Council. All big buildings, hotels and sport venues were being repaired by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Railway bridges were being plastered and roads were being repaired to give them a new look, they added.

Designs of the Games Village and stadiums were unique, they said.

As far as hotels for visitors were concerned, they will also be managed. There will be no dearth of rooms, the ministers said.

The ministers claimed that India had faced similar criticism at the time of the Asian Games in 1982, but the event was hosted successfully.

Ghandy wants lawyer during interrogation, court defers ruling

New Delhi, October 9
A city court on Friday reserved its order on a plea of Kobad Ghandy, the arrested leader of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist, to allow his lawyer to be present during police interrogation.

The chief metropolitan magistrate Kaveri Baweja after hearing the Central Bureau of Investigation and Ghandy’s counsel reserved the order for October 12.

Delhi police opposed Ghandy’s plea saying that the very purpose of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act would be impeded if counsel is allowed during interrogation.

Vishal Gosain, appearing for Ghandy, said that as a fundamental rule any arrested person can seek legal help during interrogation.

Ghandy, whose release was demanded by Maoists in exchange for abducted Jharkhand police official Francis Induwar, has been sent to police custody till October 15.

Ghandy was arrested on September 21 from Delhi. Maoists beheaded Induwar on October 6 and dumped his body off Jharkhand’s Ranchi-Bundu highway.

The 63-year-old London-educated Ghandy, arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for being a member of the banned terror organisation, was residing at a rented accommodation in south Delhi and allegedly working to set up a base for the Maoists in the Capital. — IANS
