Residents bust sex racket
New Delhi, October 29 According to the police, two Russian girls and one Indian girl, a resident of Dilshad Garden, were arrested from 365 Inn at Mahipalpur Extension Village. The fourth girl managed to give the police a slip when she was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for treatment. “She had suffered some injuries when she tried to evade arrest by jumping from the second floor of the inn. She was taken to the AIIMS but she escaped from there,” said a police official. A case of immoral trafficking has been lodged against the accused at Vasant Kunj police station. However, the three girls who were produced at the Patiala House court managed to get bail this afternoon. According to sources, residents of the area took the matter in their hands when the police failed to take action against the sex racket running from the guest house located in the area. Hundreds of residents surrounded the guest house and forcibly tried to take the girl to the police station. To which, eight men, the guest house staff and the girls protested. “The girls and their customers locked themselves in the rooms of the guest house, after which we alerted the police. The residents and the men accousting the girls also came to blows. However, the men ran away taking advantage of the commotion,” said Rajesh Kumar, a resident who was present when the incident took place. Residents said they had suspected that a sex racket was running in the guest house for the last seven-eight months. They had even reported the matter to the police but no action was taken. “Every evening girls check in and out of the guesthouse. We complained about it to the police. But no action was taken. Our family members, including children, pass through the road and it is very embarrassing,” said Mukhram, whose house is close to the guesthouse. He alleged that the police was receiving money from the owner of the guesthouse and hence, remained silent on the matter. According to sources, the inn is owned by one Gulati and he had started the guesthouse in the building over a year ago. |

A walk down memory lane
New Delhi, October 29 What turned out to be her last walk was on the lane dividing her home from her office. Her residence was later converted into the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum that attracts visitors from all over the world. A walk down the museum introduces visitors to what Indira Gandhi was all about. Her study which was her ‘sanctum’, the dining area, the bedrooms, part of the house where her son Rajiv Gandhi lived with his wife Sonia Gandhi and younger Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi, the gardens. She was a leader to the world, but this museum preserves her womanly side as a mother, mother-in-law and even a grandparent. It remains the best way to get the closest and get to know her, in a different light altogether. Pictures of a younger Indira Gandhi, Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi wedding, many of them clicked by Rajiv, give the visitors an insight into the lifestyle of the leading female leader that India has seen till date. Although much of the interiors have now been changed, it’s the path where she died that is most gripping. As one almost finishes the tour, one sees the lane where Indira Gandhi succumbed to 31 bullets and fell. Indira Gandhi was 66 when she died. It is said that it was Sonia Gandhi who rushed to the garden along with R.K. Dhawan, Gandhi’s additional private secretary and shadow of many years to help her. She was later taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where doctors declared her dead. A must see at the museum is her last writings hung on the entrance. It reveals her spirit and sense of service for the motherland, in spite of the threat to her life. |
Protesters block Delhi-Mathura road
over Rs 1.5-lakh theft in bus
Faridabad, October 29 There was commotion when a woman, Bimla, along with her child was wailing on the side of the national highway near Crowne Plaza. Bimla, a resident of Subash Road in Delhi, had boarded the bus from Ashram in Delhi to go to Mathura. She had a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh tucked in her bag. Her husband, whose native place is at Mathura, had sent her along with the money to be given to his parents. According to Bimla, she suspected a group of youths, who alighted from the bus at Sarita Vihar in Delhi, behind the act. She said that she had kept the bag under the seat of the bus. She had kept the money in a small bag which was placed in a larger bag in which she had also kept eatables and a water bottle. When she entered Haryana, her child asked for water. When she looked for the bag, she found the smaller bag containing money missing. She alleged that she kept on asking the conductor and driver of the bus to take back the bus near Ashram. But the two did not oblige. They rather asked her to get down at Crowne Plaza. As passers-by started gathering, temper among them started soaring. As the crowd grew bigger, it protested by blocking the road. The crowd relented only when the police officials reached the spot. The police got in touch with its counterpart at Hodal and all the buses of Uttar Pradesh were stopped to identify the bus in question. The police as part of investigation wanted to quiz the conductor and the driver of their possible complicity in the crime. |

without permission
Gurgaon, October 29 The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee held under the chairmanship of civil surgeon Dr S.S. Dalal at his office, here today. The ultrasound center at Aravali Clinic in DLF phase I had applied for renewal of licence and permission to shift to Medicare Pvt. Ltd. at DLF Phase-IV. But the committee learnt that the center had shifted even before it got the permission. The committee felt that since the centre had shifted without permission from the competent authority, it was now running illegally as the permission that it had was for the previous location. DU students end fee hike stir
New Delhi, October 29 “We have decided to call off the hunger strike after assurances from the proctor,” said Ashish Bharadwaj, president, DU unit, AISA. However, he added, “In case our demands are not met immediately, we will intensify our struggle.” Meanwhile, hundreds of activists from the All India Students Federation (SFI), Disha Students Organisation and the Students Federation of India today took out a protest march at DU over the issue. The march began from the Arts Faculty and after crossing Hindu, Ramjas and Kirori Mal colleges culminated at the VC’s office. A delegation of students submitted a memorandum to the VC. At the end of the march, student leaders of the three organisations addressed students and appealed to them to carry out a united struggle. Robert Rehman Raman, president, Delhi unit of SFI, said, “The fee hike is in complete accordance with the anti- students recommendations of the Ambani-Birla committee, National Knowledge Commission, Yashpal committee and the higher education bill. In the past 10 years, a 400 per cent increment has been made in the admission fees of various colleges. This has already shut the doors of various colleges for a majority of the youth. Only about 7 per cent of the eligible population in the country has access to higher education and such fee hikes would further shrink this number.” “We want to make it clear to the administration that the students will not tolerate this move and can go to any extent to press for their demands,” said Rehman. Many university teachers and other staff also joined the protest march and assured students of their support. |
