Trader killed by robbers
New Delhi, April 15 The police said that the incident took place around 9.40 pm, when Hardwari Lal Gupta and his son Pramod were returning home on a scooter after closing their shop. Pramod reportedly told the police that four unidentified robbers intercepted them and tried to snatch the bag from his father’s hand. But when they tried to raise an alarm, the robbers opened fire on them and fled away from the spot with the bag. The police believes that assailants were keeping a watch on the two for the past few days and attacked them at a secluded spot barely few metres away from their house. “We rushed them to a nearby hospital where Hardwari Lal was declared brought dead while Pramod was discharged after primary medication,” said the police. The family runs a wholesale tobacco shop in the Nangal Rai area of Mayapuri. Meanwhile, locals of the area alleged that a woman, who witnessed the incident, alerted some policemen who were near the spot, but they didn’t react quickly and the robbers managed to flee the spot. The locals, led by the traders of the area, shouted slogans against the police and staged a protest outside the police station. The police has registered a case of murder and robbery, but no arrests have been made in this regard yet. The police officials, however, denied the charge that police personnel at the spot did not respond to the situation quickly and added that a hunt was on to nab the robbers. This is the third incident of attack on businessman by robbers in the recent time. Earlier, on the night of April 14, three unidentified assailants had shot at two trades in the Keshavpuram area of Northwest district. However, both the traders— Nikhil Malhotra and Ravi Shankar— survived bullet injuries and are recuperating in the hospital. On April 13, a 64-year-old businessman was shot dead by robbers who snatched away his bag containing Rs 40,000 close to the Geeta Colony Bridge in North district. |
Women are not allowed to vote in Dadri
Greater Noida, April 15 If at all, the young girls and women, who are comparatively educated and enlightened, wish to exercise their right to vote, elders in the family frown at them. “You are a woman, what for do you want to go out to vote? Voting booths are far off and there you will have to stand in queues under the harsh sun for a long time,” is how fathers, brothers and other male members of the family react to the idea of women voting. Even the mothers and mother-in-laws are not very supportive of the idea. Education has enlightened women in towns about their rights as Indian citizens, but in most villages women are still governed by traditional mindset of elders where going out for voting is seen as something indecent. However, the story is not the same when it comes to village panchayat elections. For these elections, no girl or woman is stopped from voting because people want to ensure victory for their candidates. This is the reason the elders in rural households have not even allowed the girls and women to get their voter identity cards made. Even the women who have voter identity cards are seldom allowed to step out to cast votes. Rajni, a resident of Nyoder Ganj in Dadri revealed that she had a voter identity card, but was not allowed to cast her vote in the legislative assembly polls. According to Aarti, another young woman of Dadri, there are hundreds of girls who have not been allowed to get their voters photo identity cards made. Most young women in the Dadri area say they are not taken along for casting vote because the polling centres are situated at a distance. The women folk should not step out to be pushed around in the hustle bustle at voting centres, advice elders. |
Kapil Dev bats for Chetan Sharma
Faridabad, April 15 He accompanied Chetan Sharma to the returning officer’s office at the time of filing nomination papers. However, while interacting with the media, Kapil stressed he had no affiliation with any political party. He said he supported Chetan Sharma as he was his colleague. He said he would support any cricketer from any political party. Chetan is a dedicated person, said Kapil. He urged people to support Chetan Sharma, as the latter wanted to work for the development of Faridabad. He stressed a person like Chetan Sharma would do politics proud. Earlier, Kapil Dev inaugurated the central election office of Chetan Sharma on Neelam- Bata road BSP’s national secretary general Man Singh Manhera claimed Chetan was getting good response from the residents of Faridabad. He expressed confidence that his party would come out with flying colours in Haryana in the coming elections. The BSP also took out a procession from Neelam-Bata Road to Mini Secretariat. Haryana unit BSP general secretary and in charge of Faridabad constituency Suraj Pal (Ammu) informed his party would soon start a high-profile campaign in support of Chetan Sharma. |
Goel sits on dharna; Maken plays cricket
New Delhi, April 15 Goel and Maken are scheduled to file their nominations tomorrow and day after, respectively. Goel organised a dharna of the Resident Welfare Associations (RDA) at Jantar Mantar today against the alleged neglect of the constituency by the outgoing Lok Sabha MP Maken. The Resident Welfare Associations representatives alleged that while Maken promised he would remain available to the residents of his constituency, he neither visited the area nor was he available to listen to the problems of the residents. “In the last election he sought our votes on the plank of a clean image and the promise that he would work for us. But after winning, he never met us,” said Jitender, secretary, Aliganj RWA. Earlier, while campaigning in Mochi Gaon, Khirki Jahanpanah and Pillangi Gaon, Goel raised the issue of price rise. “The UPA government was well aware of the shortfall in sugarcane production, but still allowed its export. As a result, the sugar is now being sold at an all-time high price of Rs 30 per kilogram,” said Goel. He added, “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is projected as a great economist, but all his knowledge failed when it came to tackling price rise in the country. If the NDA is voted to power, it will accord highest priority to the issue of price rise.” Maken, on the other hand, played cricket with the voters in Paharganj today. While counting his achievements, he said his model of development was inclusive. “The new Master Plan for Delhi 2021 was an example of an inclusive philosophy. It took care of the concerns of jhuggi dwellers, people living in unauthorised colonies, hawkers and vendors, as also the middle and the upper classes,” said
Maken. |
YFE manifesto lays stress on education
New Delhi, April 15 The youth body will primarily contest the New Delhi constituency on the agenda of getting the Right to Education Act implemented. The manifesto mentions, “Children should be encouraged to attend school by provisions of appropriate incentives. Kids of below poverty line (BPL) families should be compensated for their time spent in school.” The manifesto asks for massive expansion of facilities for higher education, particularly medical education. It also includes the demand to expand the percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) spend on higher education to ten per cent with an aim to increase enrolment to the level of 30 per cent in ten years. Discriminatory application fees, scholarships and other economic charges should be abolished, says the manifesto. About the health sector, the manifesto demands that a total of 7 per cent of the GDP should be spent on health. Further, the section on national security includes the promise to formulate stringent laws to prevent terrorist activities and widespread police reforms to curtail the influence of politics in the functioning of the police. On a socialist note, the organisation wants economic resources to be distributed with preference to the poor. Earlier, the YFE had announced Sangeeta Tomar, a former army officer, as its candidate from New Delhi constituency. |
Women campaign for Mukhi
New Delhi, April 15 The women activists of the party are being led by Prem Mukhi, wife of Jagdish Mukhi. They took out a padyatra today in various segments of the constituencies. Corner meetings were also organised. Addressing the local people, Jagdish Mukhi said, “The people of Janakpuri are just like my family members. I have been living with them for the last 30 years. I have solved many problems of the area, including those related to roads and parking. Talking about the problems of local people, especially woman, Prem Mukhi tried to win their confidence. She also appealed to them to vote for Mukhi. It is clear that Mukhi being a Punjabi is certainly going to grab the Punjabi votes, but he is also trying to concentrate on young voters, between 19 and 25 years, say sources.Touching on a lot of local issues and promising to have the Delhi Metro railway system extended up to Dhansa border via Najafgarh to ensure speedy development of the region, Mukhi is leaving no opportunity to slip from his hand. People in the area too are satisfied with the development work of saffron party’s candidate and are actively participating in his campaigning, according to the sources.“I think Mukhi is a better candidate. He has done a lot in the area. Moreover, Mahabal is not campaigning well,” says the owner of a tea stall in Janakpuri. On the other side, Mahabal Mishra, Congress candidate, is trying to give a tough fight to Mukhi. He is going into the election on the favourite issue of Congress—development. “I will be talking about the national policies of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre,” he said. Assuming a positive approach, he refused to attack his main rival. He said, “I am fighting on my party policies and do not want to make personal comments on any of the contenders. It is for the public to decide who they think has worked hard for them.” |
Chauhan holds padyatra against price rise
New Delhi, April 15 Speaking on the occasion, Chauhan said that price spiral is adversely affecting the common man in two ways. “On the one hand, prices of vegetables, pulses, oil, sugar, etc have shot up and on the other hand, the quantity being supplied in packets has been reduced,” said Chauhan. Lashing out at the ‘anti-people’ policy of the UPA government, Chauhan said, “Pahle kaha jaata thaa daal roti khao prabhu ke gun gao, but since the Congress government has come to power, the daal-roti has become a scarce commodity for the common man.” He termed the Congress as the party which takes help from touts and said that the middle class and poor people were being looted to help them.He assured the people that strong action will be taken against the black-marketeers if the BJP came to power. Chauhan started the public contact programme this morning from Sanjay Jheel Park and then he took a padyatra of Mandavali village, Mandavali Main Market, Chandra Vihar, Vinod Nagar, Press Apartment, Khichripur, Mayur Vihar PH-II, Pandava Nagar, Acharya Niketan and Shashi Garden. |
Sibal sues Gupta for ‘abusive’ remarks
New Delhi, April 15 Sibal has accused the BJP nominee of making ‘abusive’ remarks against him to mislead the public ahead of the polls. In interviews published in three Hindi newspapers, Gupta is quoted to have stated that Sibal has fought cases on behalf of school managements and has exploited parents and guardians and that he has a two-faced character. Sibal’s notice asked Gupta to issue a public apology for statements that are patently false. Sibal said the accusation is baseless and was vehemently issued to mislead the public. “Gupta is running a campaign that is bereft of any real issues and is doing this because he knows he cannot match up to my performance in Chandni Chowk,” Sibal said. The notice further said that Sibal in fact was not entitled to practice and has not appeared in court since May 2004. Therefore, he could not have represented any school management on the issue of fee hike, the notice points out. Sibal clarified that he has never been a member of any school management body either before or since he became a Member of Parliament. |
BSP nominee to file papers today
Gurgaon, April 15 However, the strategy of the party in organising a rally before nomination is being watched closely in political circles. Hussain plans to show his strength in the Ahirwal region comprising Rewari and surrounding areas. He is eyeing voters of other communities in Ahirwal and thinks some of Ahir leaders, especially youngsters, might vote for him. Both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates have filed their nominations, but they have not organised a rally. Congress candidate Rao Inderjeet Singh had asked its supporters to gather at the party office at Kaman Sarai and from there his supporters accompanied him while he filed his nomination. BJP candidate Sudha Yadav held a rally of its workers at Ramlila Ground, Bhim Nagar, Gurgaon. Though the turnout was not impressive. Most of the INLD leaders from Mewat and Gurgaon did not participate in the rally. The challenge for Hussain is not only to organise a mass gathering at Rewari but to have a good show of strength at Gurgaon too. Hussain and the BSP Gurgaon unit are quite confident of doing so after the Nuh rally in which close to one lakh people turned up. The scenario is getting warmer day by day and tomorrow will decide who wins over the voters. Political circles are closely monitoring the rally and BSP state general secretary Netram has requested DGP Haryana Police, commissioner of Gurgaon, IG Faridabad and other officials of Haryana Police to deploy adequate police force to ensure smooth traffic as the party feels that other parties might try to create hurdles in the rally. |

Noida, April 15 The girl, a student of Class VII at Ryan International School in Sector-39, was stopped from sitting in the next class though she cleared the Class VII final exam. Her report card was also held up, her mother Rose Deb said. “My husband died over five years ago. I am also not employed anywhere so it became difficult for me to pay my daughter’s fees for some time. But that does not mean they will hold her back from studying,” Deb said. Deb alleged her daughter was made to sit in the school’s reception room for nearly seven hours without food. “I went to the school at 7.30 a.m. and was asked by the receptionist not to enter. She asked me to sit at the reception with some other students who had come to appear for a re-test. I was also told that since I had not paid the fees, I would not be allowed to sit in the next class. I remained sitting there from 7.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.,” said the girl. Under Section-24 of the Delhi School Education Act, 1973, schools cannot hold back report cards for non-payment of fees. When Ryan International School principal Anuradha Sharma was contacted, she said, “We had given all facilities to the student like other students. We had sent many reminders, asking her parent for fees but they did not pay it.” About the school holding up the report card, Sharma said, “They did not turn up to collect the report card.” When asked why was the report card not given to the child later or why was she not allowed to sit in next class, the principal said, “The school maintains some rules. How could she be allowed in the next class without paying proper fees?”
