Man jumps to death
New Delhi, April 10 According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Harish Bishra, a worker at a furniture showroom in Karol Bagh. Harish jumped from Nirmal Towers on Barakhamba Road in Connaught Place and died on the spot. No suicide note has been recovered from his possession, but based on the medical receipts that were recovered from him; the police has concluded that he was undergoing some treatment. A police officer said Bishra’s friend Roshan Lal, who works in the Nirmal Towers Building, informed the police control room about the incident. “Roshan Lal said that Harish had come to meet. He said he was inside the office when he heard the sound of breaking of glasses. He immediately came out to find what has happened and discovered Harish lying on the ground in a pool of blood,” he said. Roshan Lal has, however, failed to tell the police about the possible reasons for Bishra’s step. The matter is being investigated by the Connaught Place police station. The officials have ruled out any foul play. Bishra is survived by his wife and an 18-year-old son. |
Dumper crushes schoolgirl
New Delhi, April 10 The incident happened near the Rithala Metro station around 7 in the morning. The girl, Hasina, was a resident of nearby Pal Colony. The driver of the dumper, Paramanand, was beaten by the angry residents and is currently recuperating in a hospital. A case of rash and negligent driving has been lodged against him. The news of girl’s death enraged local residents who came out on the streets with the victim’s body and demanded the arrest of dumper’s owner. The main road from Rithala Metro station to Sector -23 in Rohini was blocked for nearly three hours. The protesters pelted stones at the police, which used mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd. It was only when senior police officials pacified the people that the jam was opened. |
Fee Hike
New Delhi, April 10 The protest was headed by Vijender Gupta, president of the Delhi Abhibhawak Mahasangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Chandni Chowk parliamentary constituency. The agitation was joined by parents from the NCR region and several parents’ organisations like Millenium Parents Association of Gurgaon, Abhibhawak Ekta Manch of Faridabad, Urdu School Association and Gaziabad and Noida Parents’ Association. The agitating parents alleged that the Delhi government has a nexus with the private schools and because of this nexus these schools were exploiting the parents by increasing fees arbitrarily. “The government has miserably failed to withdraw its order permitting fee hike by unaided schools even after the high court raised serious objections to its permission to allow schools to hike fee without first examining their financial records,” said Vijender Gupta. “The government must amend with immediate effect the Delhi School Education Act, 1973 in order to ensure that the representation of parents on the managing committee of an unaided school should not be less than 50 per cent,” he said The angry parents also said that the Delhi government should put on its website all school inspection reports of the last three years. |
Chetan campaigning in full swing
New Delhi, April 10 The BJP candidate from East Delhi, former Indian cricketer, is going at full throttle to combat sitting Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit in the forthcoming elections and has taken the battle to the opposite camp. What seemed like a no-contest till a week back, has now turned into one of the most eagerly watched battles in the Capital. “East Delhi is and has always been a dumping ground of the entire Capital. Compare the infrastructure here and the rest of Delhi and you would know what I mean. I do not promise the moon but surely better roads, hospitals, more school and parks for my constituents. If not anything than at least I will be always standing by my people,” says Chauhan when asked about the changes he would bring if elected from the area. The issue of fee hike in schools is one issue that has perturbed Chauhan immensely. “Schools are increasing fees arbitrarily and recovering arrears by force to which there is tacit support of the Delhi government. The budget of every house has been disturbed and the education minister does nothing except issuing notices. Concrete action is the need of the hour and the Delhi government has failed completely,” maintains former MP from Amroha (UP). In the recently concluded assembly elections in the Capital, out of the 10 constituencies in the area, 8 fell in the Congress kitty. However, all this arithmetic does not bother Chauhan. According to him, the smaller the election, the smaller the issues. Different factors prompt people to vote in the assembly elections. “The issues like terrorism, inflation, development, internal security matter most in parliamentary elections and people of the country know that the BJP can deliver when required,” opines Chauhan. The BJP cadre in the area is brimming with confidence and believes that Chauhan will pull it off. “He is a man with integrity and is in politics to serve people. People understand this and will vote for him,” said Pankaj Sharma, running behind his leader as Chauhan rushes towards his car to head for a public meeting in Vasundhra Enclave. With close to 2 lakh Rajput voters, 50,000 Sikhs, about 20 per cent trading class and close to 2 lakh Poorvanchali and Pahari voters who traditionally vote for the BJP, the equation is simple enough for Chauhan. However, what matters is their coming out to vote on May 7. |
Cancellation of Sajjan’s ticket, problem for BJP
New Delhi, April 10 “Since Sajjan is a sitting MP, anti-incumbency factor worked against him. I was concentrating only on local issues like hospitals, colleges, schools and water and power problems in the area. Sajjan had various weak points,” says Bidhuri. “Now I will have to raise national issues and can focus on local issues only after the Congress announces its new candidate,” he added. He further added, “If Yoganand Shastri comes into fray, I have issues against him. He is the Speaker of the Delhi assembly, but in the last government, he was the health minister and had done nothing for the sector. There was strike in government hospitals and a large number of patients had died because the government had made no emergency arrangements,” Bidhuri commented. Bidhuri’s election in-charge Vijay Jolly said, “The ground work done by Sajjan Kumar till now will be lost by the time the party decides on the new candidate. He said that Bidhuri today visited various areas of Ladoo Sarai, Mehrauli, Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj. |
EC’s Pappu campaign to come back
New Delhi, April 10 The campaign song “Pappu can’t vote” touched a chord amongst the masses and as compared to the dismal 43 per cent voting in the last Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, the turnout jumped to 60 per cent,” said Satbir Sila Bedi, the chief electoral officer. The EC has also chosen the song ‘Dance pe chance mar le’ from Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ to inspire Delhiites to cast their votes. An audio-visual campaign based on the song has been prepared for the purpose. “The video illustrates the voting procedure through EVM. The idea is to tell people that voting is easy and everybody should come and vote on May 7,” she said. “Earlier we wanted the tune from the film ‘Rock On’ but it would have cost almost Rs 25 lakh. This was not feasible for us,” she said. “We have decided to stick to the Pappu campaign since people are already familiar with it. We will try and reach as many people as possible through radio FM stations, TV, cinema halls and newspapers until May 7, when Delhi goes to poll,” said

TUs seek bailout package for small-scale units
New Delhi, April 10 Meetings of workers were addressed by union leaders in Okhla Phase II, Okhala Phase I, Badli and Mayapuri today. Addressing the gathering of workers in Okhla, the speakers asked the workers to clarify questions related to their livelihood with the candidates of general elections. “In the context of the global economic crisis, we have been holding corner meetings, local rallies, pamphlet distribution campaigns in the industrial areas targeting especially the export-oriented industries,” said Animesh Das, president, Delhi IFTU. The workers’ leaders emphasised that the American economic crisis has hit India due to the pro-imperialist policies of the government. “The export-oriented production has collapsed due to drying of foreign markets. The workers had spoken against these policies from the beginning,” said Animesh. The union has demanded that the bailout package should be extended to the small and medium industries. Besides, they want the bailout to ensure that the workers’ jobs and wages should not be cut down. “Especially for the textile sector, the government must subsidise manufacture of cloth and distribute it in domestic market through fair price shops.” |
Pakistani national staying in India for 44 yrs held
Ghaziabad, April 10 Amina Khatoon, a resident of Lahore in Pakistan, had been living in the Nahal area of Ghaziabad since 1965, police said. Khatoon’s father Ali Hasan had shifted to Pakistan in 1952 and in 1958 brought his wife and daughter Khatoon with him to Pakistan. After Hasan’s death, Khatoon and her mother, both Pakistani passport holders, came to India on a three-month tourist visa, the police said. Khatoon married Mahmood in Ghaziabad and obtained a long-term visa. After her mother’s death, to avoid legalities and returning to Pakistan, she forged her documents showing her date of birth as 1957 instead of 1952 and changing her name on the documents from Amina Khatoon to Amna Khatoon. The forgery came to light when the documents reached the local intelligence unit of the police for examination. “She has confessed to forging of documents and also admitted that she was helped by a broker named Mirza,” police officer Devraj Singh said. “Amina, the mother of two daughters and two sons who are India citizens, was arrested under various sections of the IPC and the Passport Act. We have also named Mirza as the co-accused in the case but he is absconding,” he added. — IANS |

His body was found near a drain in the Nizamuddin area on Friday morning. The police said Anwar often got fits.
