Batra asks Chaudhary to quit as Cong member
Says it is must if he wants to show solidarity with Punjabis of Haryana
Ravi S. Singh
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, April 13
Haryana’s former home minister and state general secretary of the Haryana Janhit Congress (BL), Subhash Batra today urged the Haryana minister of urban local bodies A.C.Chaudhary, to resign from the primary membership of the Congress if he wanted to show solidarity with the Punjabis of Haryana.

A.C.Chaudhary resigned from the Haryana cabinet ostensibly to protest against his party which had denied ticket to a member of the Punjab community for the election.

In a significant statement, Batra said that he was ready to resign from all the posts of the HJC (BL) if A.C.Chaudhary resigned from the primary membership of the Congress.

“I am above petty politics as my interest was with the welfare of the Punjabis as well as their rights,” he added.

Batra, who is also the spokesperson of the HJC (BL) and well-known leader among the Punjabis, alleged that A.C.Chaudhary was resorting to “populist” stance and misleading the community, by tendering his resignation from the Haryana cabinet to the office of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Chaudhary has also stated that he was trying to meet Sonia Gandhi on the issue, he added.

Batra, who is also a member of the Central Parliamentary Board of the HJC (BL), said that it was surprising that Chaudhary wanted to meet Sonia Gandhi who decided on the list of nominees of her party for the tickets. If Chaudhary really had the cause of the Punjabis at heart, he should resign from the primary membership of the Congress also. Chaudhary did not actively espouse the cause of the Punjabis when there was lobbying for the ticket in the Congress. Rather, he was angling for a ticket for himself, he added.

He said the HJC (BL) was the only political party which had genuine concern for the Punjabis in Haryana. This was testified by the fact that it gave tickets to Punjabis from three out of the ten parliamentary constituencies in Haryana.

He expressed concern that the political parties in Haryana except HJC (BL) have neglected the Punjabis even though they constituted 33 per cent of the population in the state.

Bidhuri assures rural development
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 13
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from South Delhi Ramesh Bidhuri today said the area had always been given step-motherly treatment by the Delhi government as well as the Congress-led UPA government at the centre.

Majority of the segments in the constituency are either villages or unauthorised colonies where the government has failed to provide basic amenities. The Delhi government has a rural development board for the welfare of villages, but these villages do not have sewer lines, water supply, good schools, hospitals and colleges. Some even do not have power supply, claimed Bidhuri.

Addressing a conference, he said all development works had been carried out in East Delhi from where Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s son Sandeep Dikshit is a candidate.

He further said if the government had used vacant village plots for Commonwealth Games, it would have been beneficial for residents. But it was not done because sitting Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, whose candidature has been withdrawn, did not make any effort for it. He never raised peoples’ voice in Parliament.

Bidhuri promised if voted to power, his priorities would be to work for proper water supply, regularisation of colonies, opening colleges, ownership right to property holders in resettlement colonies, BPL cards to jhuggi dwellers, extension of lal dora area and opening government hospitals.

Bidhuri was accompanied by Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi chief minister Sahab Singh Verma; Vijay Jolly; Sarita Chaudhary, president of Delhi Women Morcha and others.

It was the first time that Parvesh Verma was seen in an election meeting after he was denied ticket from West Delhi.

When asked about Verma’s presence, Bidhuri said he was upset after he was denied ticket and that was natural. But now he is working for the party, he confirmed.

Talking to the media, Parvesh said, “Party is like my mother. I can never leave it. I was in the party, I am in the party and I will be in the party. I will go to each village and appeal people to vote for Ramesh Bidhuri.”

When asked about working in West Delhi, he said, “Of course, if the party asks, I will work there also.”
