Trader shot in robbery bid
New Delhi, April 12 According to the police, the incident took place around 10.30 pm near the Geeta Colony Bridge in the area. Rajendra Pal Singh (45) was returning to his house in Krishna Nagar from Chandni Chowk in a shared auto when the auto was intercepted by three motorcycle-borne unidentified assailants in the middle of the bridge. “The assailants asked Singh to hand over his hand bag containing Rs 40,000, but when he resisted, one of them fired at him with a countrymade pistol. They fled the spot after snatching the bag,” said the police. Injured Singh was rushed by the auto driver to Walia Nursing Home where he was declared brought dead. Singh was a wholesale dealer of grains and he owned a shop in the Lal Kuan market of Hauz Qazi. A police officer said that initial investigations suggested that some insider could be involved in the incident. His family members reportedly told the police that he never carried more than Rs 1,000-1,200, but on Saturday evening, he had received a payment of Rs 40,000 and was returning home with the money. “Some payment related records and files that were lying in the hand bag were also taken away by the robbers,” said the police officer. Singh, a resident of the Gopal Park area of Gandhi Nagar, is survived by wife and two sons — Puneet and Raj Kumar Anand. Raj Kumar complained that the area around the bridge had became unsafe for the past few months and such incidents had happened in the past also, but the police did not take any appropriate actions. “There have been several incidents of robbery in the area in the past, as it isn’t lit up after 10 pm and there is no police patrolling either. It is very unsafe to pass from that area in night,” he said. |

New Delhi, April 12 The relatives of Arif Khan (24) and some of their supporters gathered at the police station today afternoon and damaged property and smashed the windscreen of the Gypsy of the station house officer. They were protesting against alleged police inaction in the case. The police had to resort to mild baton charge to quell the crowd that had gathered on the police station premises. However, contrary to victim’s family’s claim, the police claimed that they had already arrested the persons named by them in the FIR. Arif Khan, owner of a restaurant in the Bhajanpura area, was badly beaten by some people on Saturday and was found lying unconscious around 11 pm. He was rushed to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where he died during treatment. “Initial investigation suggests that it could be a case a personal enmity and we have arrested one person, Gagan, while hunt is on to nab two more suspects— Rohtas and Pintu. Kohli takes potshots at govt on economic issues
New Delhi, April 12 He said the fear of unemployment is gripping the professionals of Delhi with as many as 20 people have lost their lives due to unemployment. Seven people were saved while they were trying to commit suicide. “A manager of a multinational company, Vasudev Kaushal, became a robber after he lost his job. In Saket, an unemployed person tried to kidnap his cousin. The government should prepare an emergency plan to deal with the people who lose their jobs. It should make optional arrangements or compensate such families,” said Kohli. Taking up the issue of price rise, he said that despite the tall claims of the government, prices are actually increasing day by day. “The government claims that inflation has gone down to 0 .26 per cent, but according to government data, the prices of food items have gone up by 17 per cent. Grain has become costlier by 9.61 per cent, pulses 8.46 per cent, fruit by 8.02 per cent and milk by 6.22 per cent. Even the price of salt has increased by 11 per cent,” he said. Kohli said that this year India would have to import 10 lakh tonnes of sugar despite the fact that India is one of the biggest producers of sugar. “On the one hand, the public life is badly affected by price spiral, and on the other hand, industrial production is decreasing fast. In February 2009, the industrial production was 2.8 per cent whereas last year this was 8.8 per cent. There has been sharp decrease in the production of basic commodities, semi-finished or recycled products, consumer goods, durable, construction and mining products,” he added. |
e-courts to help in speedier disposal of cases
New Delhi, April 12 When Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Rakesh Pandit was told by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) counsel that the court was not empowered to hear a case involving murder and cited an apex court ruling of 1994 to back the argument, the magistrate was not convinced. Judge Pandit asked the court staff to bring his laptop and began searching for the apex court ruling. Within seconds, the apex court ruling was in front of him. He informed the CBI counsel that the judgment cited has been set aside by the apex court in 1998, and therefore the contention of the investigation agency held no ground. The CBI counsel had no option but to seek time to prove his contention over the magisterial court’s jurisdiction. The court slated the matter for April 28. The idea of giving laptops along with internet connection to judicial officers was mooted by the e-committee of the apex court in 2007. “It saves a lot of our time. We now don’t have to read and carry bulky books with us. We read even during travelling, which also saves us a lot of paperwork,” said a judicial officer not wishing to be named. The establishment of e-courts is also helping in speedy disposal of cases in the lower courts. “One of our objective is to enable judicial officers access judgments of the apex court, high courts and even international courts at the click of a button and speed up their research work for a judgment, thus improving rate of disposal,” the e-committee headed by Justice G.C. Bharuka said in his report to the law ministry’s five-year plan to computerise all courts for speedy disposal of cases. For the common litigant, the e-courts project is lending greater transparency to the judiciary as well as speedy disposal of cases. With web connectivity, the moment a judicial officer passes a judgment it gets automatically uploaded on the national judicial website (www.indianjudiciary.in) - thus reducing the waiting time for litigants to get copies of the order. They would earlier have to wait for hours outside the courts to get a copy of the order. Judges now don’t have to depend on the steno or other court staff to dictate orders. Many of them do the keying themselves while travelling or at home. “With this system, our dependency on the stenos and other support staff of the courts has also come down,” added the judicial officer.

IIT-JEE pattern change surprises students
New Delhi, April 12 “In JEE 2009, the major changes were disappearance of assertion reasoning type of questions, subjective questions were back in the paper, and negative marking in (multiple) choice types,” according to an analysis of the IIT-JEE 2009 examination by Career Launcher, a counselling firm. “There was a qualitative shift in the kind of questions asked - these do not require a lot of rigorous problem solving, but rather a fairly good understanding of the concepts and the ability to comprehend and analyse,” it added. Saurabh Kumar, who is the national academic head of Career Launcher, said there was a change in the pattern that “was slightly difficult as compared to last year’s paper.” “But change in pattern in IIT-JEE is nothing new,” Kumar said. “Overall, the number of questions were reduced from 135 last year to 117 this year,” Kumar added. “In all, there were 24 subjective questions. Mathematics was the most difficult followed by physics and chemistry,” he said. The paper evoked a mixed response from the students as well. While some termed it as very difficult, others said anyone with clear concepts would not have faced much difficulty. “The main problem was negative marking and subjective questions that too so many. They were not expected at all. Overall, the paper was very difficult,” Class XII student Arpit Gupta, who is a student of Bal Bhavan Public School, told IANS. “Definitely, the diffculty level was high as compared to the last year. But the questions were concept based and required a clear understanding,” said Rakshit Aggarwal, a student of Sachdeva Public School, Rohini. But Aditya Bindal, a Class XII student of St.Xaviers School, said he “enjoyed” writing the exam. “We were prepared for the pattern change. So, tackling it was not much of a difficulty. The questions were concept based. But I was a bit surprised with negative marking,” Bindal said.

Gupta rebuts Sibal’s charge on code
New Delhi, April 12 He said that Sibal has never served people and now trying to spoil his image by making false allegations. “Sibal has nothing to do with the problems of common man. That may be the reason why he is considering the works done by MCD for the well-being of people as violation of code of conduct,” said Gupta. In a letter written to the EC, the Congress’s Chandni Chowk MP Kapil Sibal has accused him of violating the model code of conduct. Gupta said that the MCD has increased the pension given to elderly people, widows and physically challenged people from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 in the MCD budget for the year 2009-10 passed in February. “We have implemented the increased pension scheme. MCD spends Rs 220 crore per annum for the welfare of senior citizens, widows and physically challenged people,” said the Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta. While making the allegations, Sibal also released a CD to prove his case on Saturday. Declaring Sibal’s CD as a complete flop show, Gupta said that all the allegations raised in the CD are baseless. “Sibal is raising all useless points because he has got nothing concrete to discuss.” |
