Job Woes
Jalandhar, October 26 According to information available with The Tribune, not much work has been done at the grass-roots level to accomplish the scheme. Ever since the implementation of NREGA people have reported one anomaly after the other. The extent of shortcomings in the scheme can be gauged from the fact that till date only 25 gram rozgar sahayaks (GRS) have been appointed against the sanctioned posts of 200 at the gram panchayat level. The work at the block level also hangs fire since the authorities concerned have not recruited even a single accountant, whereas the sanctioned posts lies at 10. Expressing concern over the failure of the scheme in many parts of the district, leader of the Pendu Mazdoor Union (PMU) Kashmir Singh Ghugshore said, “It is sad to see that despite having necessary funds, the scheme has fallen flat in the district. A majority of the labourers working under NREGA in villages like Kala Bahiya, Hasanmunda and Chitti of Kartarpur block had to leave their work midway owing to one problem or the other. The workers were not paid the sanctioned amount of Rs 102 as per the NREGS Act as well.” As per the scheme, the workers were to be employed in various works, including drainage of water-logged areas, construction and repair of embankment, etc. It is pertinent to mention here that NREGA was started to create job avenues for the rural people under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme Act (NREGA). Under the scheme the authorities concerned are bound to provide 100 man days of labour work to villagers. The scheme was implemented throughout the country from April 1, except for 82 districts of the country where it came into being as pilot project in 2006. When contacted, ADC, development, Kulbir Singh said, “There are certain limitations under the scheme. We have recruited the required GRSs according to the 4 per cent amount out of the total funds meant for them. So far as the implementation of the scheme is concerned, enough measures are being taken to make it a success.” |

People urged to donate blood
Hoshiarpur, October 26 Mahant Pritpal Singh, former MP Kamal Chaudhary, civil surgeon Dr S.K. Gupta and president of the blood bank Bhupinder Singh Pahwa were present. Delivering the keynote at the seminar on “Voluntary blood donation - In context of festival of lights,” organised on the occasion, general secretary of the ISBTI, Punjab chapter, Dr Ajay Bagga said Divali is the festival of happiness, lights and exchange of gifts. Voluntary blood donation is the best gift which the people can give to fellow human beings. Blood donation gives immense happiness to the donor and brings light in the life of patients of anaemia. People should donate blood on the festival of light, said Dr Bagga, adding that the safe and healthy blood comes only through voluntary blood donation. But in India only 50 per cent blood is collected through voluntary blood donation and the rest is by replacement blood donation. In Punjab, less than 25 per cent blood is collected through voluntary blood donation. To augment voluntary blood donation, Dr Bagga urged the people to make blood donation a way of life. |

Fiscal recession fails to dampen Divali
spirit
Pathankot, October 26 People were seen making heavy purchases of articles connected with the festival of Divali. People say, “The festival of lights comes only once a year and we cannot let it go without celebrating it enthusiastically.” Vinod Mahajan, a local resident, feels no burden of Divali on his pocket and says everything has been planned. “We have celebrated Vijayadashmi, Durga pooja and Karva Chauth and now we are going to celebrate Bhaiyadooj also after Divali.” Markets here remained overcrowded with people purchasing huge gifts, sweetmeats, fruits and other valuables to be presented to their near and dear ones. The security arrangements have been beefed up in the entire town asd well as on the outskirts to check entry of unwanted elements into the town, claimed SP Harpreet Singh here today. BATALA: Divali enthusiasm is missing among the people in this industrial town this year, in view of the global financial recession. Markets have been decorated as the shopkeepers had expected a good number of customers on Divali. Shops are full of sweets, toys, gold ornaments, etc. but customers are missing due to heavy prices of goods. A market survey on Sunday showed that there had been a considerable increase in the prices of items like sweets, clothes and other gift items. |

Saidpur resident alleges
threats from policemen
Kapurthala, October 26 In his complaint to the Sultanpur Lodhi DSP, Surat Singh alleged that Baljinder Singh, a constable posted at Talwandi Chaudharian police station, and Paramjit Singh, posted at the DSP’s office, had been threatening him. Surat further alleged that Baljinder Singh stopped him when he was going to Bulpur village on Friday morning and abused him, saying he would show the former his place and implicate him in false cases to settle old scores. He also alleged that Baljinder boasted about his connections in the police department and that nothing would come out even if Surat Singh complained to his superiors. Since both the parties are neighbours, the two cop brothers are in the habit of abusing the family members of Surat Singh whenever they come across one. When contacted, Kapurthala SSP Rakesh Aggarwal said an enquiry into the case would be marked to an officer not attached with the Sultanpur Lodhi DSP office where the cops were presently deployed. He said action would be taken against the cops if found guilty. |
