Hoshiarpur, October 22 Both Ram Singh and Manpreet were admitted to Civil Hospital, Garhshankar from where they were referred to DMC, Ludhiana, under critical condition. According to police sources, Rohit, Rakesh, Ram Singh and Manpreet were going from Sahiba village to Garhshankar while the jeep was going towards Balachaur. The tragedy occurred at about midnight, when the driver of the jeep failed to control the steering due to which it rammed into their motorcycles. Garhshankar police today registered a case under sections 279, 304, 337, 338 and 427 of the IPC in this connection. In another accident, as many as 30 students of a public school of Rajpur Bhaian had a miraculous escape in an accident today when the driver of the school van ferrying them to school lost control over the steering due to which it first hit cyclist Gurmail Singh of Jalowal Khanoor and later Narinder Pal of Chiton as a result of which both were seriously wounded and were admitted to the local Civil Hospital where the
condition of Gurmail Singh is stated to be serious. According to eye witnesses, at Rorian, the driver suddenly lost control over the steering of the van due to which, after hitting the cyclists, it entered the nearby fields. Luckily, none of the
students was injured.
Head-on collision
Gurdaspur: Swainder Singh and his wife Vir Kaur were killed and their son Happy Singh suffered multiple injuries when a speeding tractor trailer collided head-on with the motorcycle they were riding on Sakki bridge near Gurudwara Baoli Sahib on Fathegarh Churian road today. According to police sources, the family was on its way from Shampura village to Udowali village . When the trio reached the
Sakki bridge, a speeding sand-laden tractor trailer, coming from the opposite direction, rammed into their bike. Vir died on the spot and Swainder succumbed to his injuries while being taken to a nearby hospital. Happy Singh is battling for life at Dera Baba Nanak hospital. Police has registered a case and taken the tractor trailer in its custody. |

Amritsar, October 22 Those who have been admitted to the GNDH were Sandeep (21) of Aman Avenue, Santosh Kumari of New Jawahar Nagar, Shailesh (19) and Madhu of Mustafabad, Usha Rani of Batala and Satinder Bir Kaur of Sultanwind Road. The hospital authorities also organised a seminar today to educate the doctors about the symptoms of the disease so that they could further educate the patients coming to the hospital. The seminar was addressed among others by Dr Jagdish Gargi, principal, Government Medical College, Dr B.S. Bal, professor, department of medicine, and Dr Tejbir. Addressing the seminar, Dr Gargi said the people were themselves responsible for the spread of the disease as they did not remove the water from the coolers, flower pots and other instruments in their houses resulting in the breeding of dengue-spreading mosquito. Meanwhile, the CT scan installed in the hospital at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore became functional today. Dr R.P.S. Boparai, medical superintendent, said the CT scan facility would be available to the patients at half the rates of the market price. He said the facility would be available for 24 hours a day and would also be provided to the patients getting treatment from other private hospitals in the city. |

Nawanshahr, October 22 This was stated by MLA Jatinder Singh Kariha, while addressing a gathering of school teachers at a function organised by the Sarv Shikhiya Abhiyan (SSA) at Government Senior Secondary School here on Wednesday. The MLA distributed cheques amounting to Rs 15.15 lakh among various schools falling under Nawanshahr assembly segment for development of infrastructure facilities. “During his recent visit to Nawanshahr, the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had asked the district education officials to prepare an estimate of amount required for different infrastructure facilities in the schools. The district authorities have prepared a budget of Rs 12 crore,” said Kariha, adding that he would take up the matter with the CM for early release of funds. The MLA exhorted the teachers to uplift the standard of education in the schools so that the children, especially belonging to the poor sections of the society, could be provided quality education which will enable them to face the new challenges in the era of globalisation. District education officer PC Gupta asked the teachers to become a 'role model' for the students as the children follow their teachers more than their parents. Deputy district education officer Swarn Singh, district science supervisor Balihar Singh Bains, officiating principal of school Krishan Kumar, district SSA coordinator Ashok Mehta and district vocational coordinator Dinesh Kumar were among others who also spoke on the occasion. |

Hoshiarpur, October 22 This is a golden opportunity for government officers and employees to have a tourist trip on the expenses of government, but they would have to perform election duty there. Stating this in a meeting of government officers convened in connection with sending government employees for conducting elections in Jammu and Kashmir, deputy commissioner, Hoshiarpur, N. K. Wadhawan said knowledge of Urdu was not necessary for these government employees. Election would be conducted through electronic voting machines. Interested employees, for performing duties as polling officers and presiding officer, should send their consent to the heads of their respective departments. |

Gadri mela: A peep into revolutionary past
Jalandhar, October 22 Convener of the cultural wing, Gurmeet, said singing contests would be organised for junior, senior, solo and group singing contestants. The junior wing will include contestants of ages up to 15 years while the senior wing will have participants from 16 to 25 years,
he informed. Painting competitions will be held on the second day of the contest which will have contestants of up to 11, 17 and 25 years. The theme for senior participants will be based on the ‘scene of dream India in the eyes of martyrs in the present situation’. The junior participants would be asked to paint a portrait of any Gaddar, Babbar and Naujawan Bharat Sabha with a copy shown to them at the spot. The sub-junior category participants would, however, be asked to paint any idea of their choice. On the same day, there will be quiz competitions with topics from origin, purpose, impact and leadership of Kirti Movement, Babbar Movement and Naujawan Bharat Sabha. A kavi darbar and book release ceremony will be the highlights of the evening. On the last day, the flag ceremony will be performed by Prof Dilbir Kaur with the flag song penned by associate secretary Amolak Singh playing in the backdrop. Plays will begin at 4 pm and continue till the wee hours the next day. A book exhibition will be organised on all

‘Mechanical transplantation good for paddy yield’
Amritsar, October 22 The deputy commissioner, Kahan Singh Pannu, who had personally initiated the mechanical process in a farm near Chamiari village, said the process saved not only labour charges but also resulted in raising the productivity by more than 10 per cent. Pannu, who oversaw the harvesting process in the village, said the mechanical transplantation cost roughly about Rs 700 per acre, whereas manual transplantation cost more than Rs 1,200. He said this not only saves time but add more plants per acre. He said the experiment of mechanical transplantation was done in view of the labour shortage. He said during the next season more farms would be included in the process. He said the agriculture department had prepared a comprehensive report on the use of mechanical transplantation and same would be sent to the state government to start the process in other areas of the state.

Huge stock of drugs seized in raid
Jalandhar, October 22 Acting on a tip off, a team of the state drug controller, along with officials of the district health authorities, conducted surprise raids at the City Medical Hall in Adampur and recovered a huge stock of medicines and drugs. The medical hall was in operation even after facing closure by the health department. Sources in the department revealed that sleuths seized a truckload of medicines and drugs from the medical hall. The health authorities parked the vehicles containing the seized drugs within the premises of the community health center at Adampur. Moreover, the proprietor had been running its trade without any sign board of the hall. The drugs and medicines were openly sold without any prescription, revealed Dr. SS Walia, civil surgeon, Jalandhar. The civil surgeon revealed that the exact amount of seized stock could not be ascertained till late this evening. The exact details could be known by tomorrow, as the members of the raiding team were busy in assessing the amount and the quantity of the amount seized till late this night, claimed Dr.
