Bibi to Khaira: Don’t be a hindrance to development

Bholath, October 13
The war of words between arch rivals former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur and Bholath MLA Sukhpal Khaira is expected to intensify in the days to come. As Khaira and his supporters staged a dharna on Monday outside the offices of then Kapurthala deputy commissioner and the SSP in protest against registering “false” cases against them, Jagir Kaur asked him to stop cheap politics by creating hindrance in development projects.

SSP Rakesh Agarwal said Khaira and 57 of his supporters were produced before the SDM of Bholath on Sunday evening who directed the police to release them unconditionally as there was no threat to law and order from them at that time.

They were arrested when they were protesting the “re-laying” of the foundation stone of the water supply scheme at Akbarpur village by Jagir Kaur on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, talking to The Tribune, Jagir Kaur said instead of creating a hindrance in different development projects, Khaira should welcome her efforts in bringing these projects to Bholath.

Reiterating that the survey for the water supply scheme of Akbarpur and 67 other villages falling in the Bholath constituency was done in 2001 during the previous SAD-BJP government and the project was sanctioned in
September 2006.

“The work on these NABARD-funded water supply schemes was started a few weeks back,” she said.

Showing documents, Jagir Kaur said Rs 6.81 crore would be spent on these rural water supply schemes initiated due to her efforts.

Asserting that she would work hard to provide water supply in each of the 143 villages in the Bholath constituency, Jagir Kaur said water supply schemes had been applied in 23 villages, whereas work on such schemes in 73 villages was on and approval for another 16 villages had been received.

She would get the remaining 31 villages covered under one or the other scheme for providing water supply, she added.

Answering a query about objections by Khaira to the proposed inauguration of the Sant Prem Singh Muralewale memorial gate by SAD chief Sukhbir Badal on Wednesday, she said Khaira should stop creating hindrance in development projects.

She said the foundation stone of the gate had been laid by then CM Amarinder Singh but the same had been completed during the present government by spending Rs 25 lakh.

Reminding Khaira, Jagir Kaur said the foundation stone of the Bholath flyover over the Kali Bein had been laid by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in 2001, but the same was inaugurated by Amarinder Singh a few years later.

“Parties come to power and lose but the development works continue and no one has any right to create hindrance in these works,” she said.

Bibi Jagir Kaur claimed foundation stones of repair, reconstruction or widening of several roads had been laid by Congress ministers but most of these works were completed with the funds arranged with her efforts under the MPLAD funds or the Badal government.

Some of these roads where work had been completed are Nadala to Begowal, Nadala to Man Talwandi, Begowal to Bhutnura, Subhanpur to Nadala and Hamira to Bholath, she added.

Similarly, work on the Bholath-Bhogpur and Bholath-Bhutnura roads was on, whereas the work on widening of the Kartarpur-Bholath road would start next month, she claimed.

‘Fix sugarcane MSP at Rs 200’
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, October 13
Sugarcane Growers Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, general secretary Baldev Singh Pota, in a press release issued here on Saturday, urged the central and Punjab governments to fix the minimum support price of sugarcane at Rs 200 per quintal to promote its production under diversification of agriculture.

On account of less rates of sugarcane fixed by the government last year and lack of arrangements for its marketing, growers were disappointed resulting in the reduction of the area under cultivation of this crop to a greater extent this year.

With the low production of sugarcane, sugar mills would function for a shorter period as compared to the previous years, said Pota, adding that with the mills functioning for a shorter period, labourers as well as ancillary units would face problems.

On account of the liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation policies of the central government, the country was facing great problems.

The mill owners were earning huge profits by producing sugar, molasses, liquor, etc. from it, whereas the farmers were getting a little share for their produce.

Demanding formation of farmers’ cooperative societies, immediate clearance of all types of arrears of farmers, restarting of the sugar mills, arrangements for loan of Rs 50,000 per acre through cooperative societies and other financial institutions, Pota appealed to the sugarcane producers to cooperate with the sangharsh committee in getting the demands accepted.

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 13
Accusing the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of centralising power into the hands of his family, Justice (retd) Ajit Singh Bains, chairman of PHRO, an NGO, said it was a dangerous trend for the democratic set up in the state.

“The state government is also deliberately shielding the accused, including senior officials, involved in various scandals,” said Bains in a statement issued to the press.

Demanding an open debate on the issue, Bains, in a missive to CM, alleged that attempts were being made to save the accused in the infamous Siti cable sex scam besides saving Kultar Singh, former SSP of Amritsar, whose name had ‘figured’ during a probe into a suicide case.

“The inquiry has now been handed over to Inspector General (Traffic) who is yet to submit his report to the government,” claimed the PHRO chairman. Bains also questioned the transfer of murder case of a medical intern Dr Shashi Bhushan, in which involvement of the son of Dr JS Dalal, director research medical education was alleged, to SSP Gurdaspur. Earlier, Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, SSP Amritsar, was probing the case.

The NGO chairman further claimed that his team after inquiry had found Badal misusing the funds of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) to fulfill his political aspirations, besides promoting his

AISAD resents ‘misuse’ of treasury funds
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, October 13
President of the All-India Shiromani Akali Dal (AISAD) Jaswant Singh Mann has expressed anguish over the alleged mismanagement and misappropriation of treasury funds by officials of the state government.

Talking to this correspondent today, Jaswant Singh Mann alleged that the administrative control of the political leadership was lacking which led to the economic failure of the SAD-BJP government. The expenses incurred on litigation by way of paying Rs 10 crore to law officers and other leading lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Supreme Court revealed all these facts.

The Punjab Infrastructure Board had already wasted more than half of the proposed amount of Rs 10,000 crore mega projects. The sangat darshan had become a mockery and only a political puppet show. Extra constitutional authorities like sons and relatives of the
Chief Minister and other ministers were issuing statement relating to the policies of the government.
