Hoshiarpur, October 5 “The SAD-BJP government was committed to provide excellent infrastructure in the state,” he said. Lashing out at Centre and previous Amarinder regime in state, Badal said the Congress has remained completely insensitive towards the development in rural and urban areas. The CM claimed no area of the state would be left under developed. Transport minister Master Mohan Lal said the ultra-modern air-conditioned bus stand would come up at a cost of Rs 7 crore. “The Punjab Roadways would bear the entire expenditure. The construction work is on at Rajpura, Bathinda, Rampura Phul and Anandpur Sahib bus stands,” he said, adding that the government’s new pro-passenger transport policy would provide best facilities to commoners at affordable rates. He said the state government would launch the air-conditioned bus service from November 1. “The fare would be nominal, just 10% more than the ordinary bus. 50 buses each from Punjab Roadways and PRTC would be pressed into service,” he said, adding that. 350 new buses would be added to the existing fleet of Punjab Roadways, while the number for PRTC would be 159. He also stated that the Pepsu Roadways had made a net profit of 9.82 crore in the current year. Punjab Roadways has brought down its net loss to Rs 58 crore from Rs 162. He said transport department would also launch passenger insurance scheme from November 1. Under it, the family of a passenger killed in bus accident would be entitled for a claim of Rs 2 lakh, added Lal. In his address, forest minister Tikshan Sood highlighted the problems of the Kandi area and demanded a special package for it. Earlier, Badal laid the foundation stone of a community centre in Gutam Nagar which will incur a cost of Rs one crore. The CM gave a grant of Rs 10 lakh for the project from his discretionary quota. He also announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh for the purchase of books for the bar library. Prominent among others present on the occasion were technical education minister Ch Swarana Ram, chief parliamentary secretaries Mohinder Kaur Josh and Des Raj Dhuga, principal secretary (transport) DS Jaspal, MLA Mahilpur Sohan Singh Thandal, Rajya Sabha member Varinder Singh Bajwa and district presidents of SAD & BJP units of Hoshiarpur. |

Gurdaspur, October 5 He added that he had already taken up the matter with the state leadership with a plea that with what sanctity former deputy speaker was accusing these leaders when they have nothing to do with the issue of Amritsar Improvement Trust land deal. He claimed that Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Harpartap Singh Ajnala, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Swinder Singh Kathunangal, Jasbir Singh Dimpa, KamalJit Singh Lally belonged to a group of leaders with their individual high stature and having common agenda. These leaders had fought against the atrocities committed on the Congress workers by the leaders and activists of SAD-BJP alliance and had raised matter connected with opening of passage to Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan and development of border districts of Punjab. He said the historic visit of AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi to Punjab has boosted the morale of every Congressman in the state at the time when the Lok Sabha elections were around the corner. The visit had clearly drawn a roadmap for the days to come and at this critical juncture any kind of action, which could harm the party and personalities of leaders, was not welcome at all, he added. |

Jalandhar, October 5 The amount of loss borne by the education department can be gauged from the fact that as many as 23 government schools in Shahkot were almost ravaged by the incessant rain and subsequent flooding. Since a majority of the schools remained submerged in water for a long period of time, no rescue work could be initiated. It has increased the extent of damage, says sources. Keeping in mind the immediate need to provide necessary facilities to these institutions, deputy commissioner Ajeet Singh Pannu had issued directions to the district education officer (primary) Joginder Dass to send a tentative estimate of the loss borne by the affected schools. According to sources, the government has earmarked separate funds for the badly-affected schools. These include Government Elementary School, Salem where the amount of loss borne was around Rs 9.5 lakh. Here two rooms would be constructed along with an office room and a verandah. Similarly, the damage at Government Senior Secondary School, Gidderpindi, is close to Rs 9 lakh. As many as three rooms would be constructed here. Other schools, which have been allocated funds include Government Elementary School, Sarai Khas, Government Elementary School, Kotla Suraj Mal and government primary schools at Kutbiwal, Gidderpindi, Arjanwal and Kadiana. The government has also released funds to the tune of Rs Rs one lakh for all the government schools at Malsian where four schools require touching up. DC Ajeet Singh Pannu said, “The funds have been released to ensure that reconstruction work takes off smoothly and in time.” |

with the financial support extended to them by the organisation. Not only this, the manch has married off hundreds of poor girls, belonging to various religions, of Gurdaspur and its neighbouring districts by organising mass marriage functions. The manch has also been educating and awakening people, belonging to
backward and poor sections of the society. “First, it was mere discussion among friends and other right thinking
people something should be done for the society. Within few days, serious deliberations were held to form a society and ultimately this manch came into existence in 2001,” said patron of the manch, Puran Chand Pyasya adding that the manch had been successful to achieve its mission so far. |

Amritsar, October 5 The eye check-up camps were being conducted in all districts on the direction of director health services Dr. S.P.S. Sohal who had asked the civil-surgeons to hold these camps in all blocks. Chawla said all the formalities have been completed in this regard for the annual grant of Rs 5 crore while a memorandum of understanding is in its final stages and would be signed with PGI shortly where the surgeries would be conducted. She said it would be a unique opportunity for the poor children to get benefit from this health care scheme initiated by the central government. She said the total funds received under this mission would be earmarked for the treatment of this ailment. The health minister said this project would be launched in all the government schools where the senior medical faculty would hold regular check up camps to identify the children suffering from this ailment. She said the doctors would refer such children to PGI for further investigations and recommend surgeries which required immediate medical attention. Meanwhile, the health authorities identified about 37 children who required urgent eye treatment during a camp. |

Amritsar, October 5 A special seminar was organised at SSSS Senior Secondary School to deliberate on the issue. Majority of the speakers opined that there was need to form a pressure group to accelerate the process of setting up the corridor. Woman kills self, husband held
Hoshiarpur, October 5 According to police sources, Rita Rani, wife of Raghbir Singh of Railly village in Mukerian, in a complaint stated that her daughter Surekha was married to Lakhbir Singh of Chack Ladian village on February 7, 2006. Soon after the wedding, her husband and in-laws allegedly started torturing her for more dowry. When Surekha could not take it any longer, she swallowed some poisonous substance and was rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar where she breathed her last. After investigating the charges, police booked her husband Lakhbir Singh, sister-in-law Anju Rani, her husband Paramjit Singh of Chack Ladian under section 304 B of the IPC. Lakhbir Singh has been arrested. |
Man’s body recovered from Kali Bein
Kapurthala, October 5 According to the police, the body found at Bhagatpur appears to be that of a migrant labourer in his 40s, while the one recovered today is of a Punjabi man. Talking to The Tribune, Kotwali station house officer (SHO) sub- inspector Parminder Singh Bajwa said there were no injury marks on bodies. He said the body recovered today had almost turned into a skeleton, adding that message has been flashed to all the police stations, especially in Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur districts where Kali Bein flows. The SHO said the body recovered near Bhawanipur village has been sent to Kapurthala civil hospital for post-mortem examination and necessary action would be taken after receiving the autopsy report. In the other case, routine proceedings under section 174 of CrPC have been initiated. |
