Chargesheet filed in Bawa murder case
Dharmendra Joshi/TNS

Jalandhar, October 4
Loot was the prime motive behind the high-profile murder of KMV College principal Rita Bawa. This is what the prosecution agency, Ludhiana police, stated in its chargesheet filed in a city court here on Saturday.

Rita Bawa was found killed at her campus residence. She, along with her confidant cook Kishore Mandal and two security gaurds Tarsem Lal and Shamsheedin, was brutally murdered at around midnight on January 5.

In its chargesheet, filed exactly after 78 hours of arrest of four of the eight accused, the prosecution agency gave the sequence of the crime after completion of its investigation in the case.

While chargesheet was filed against the four arrested accused - Mohammad Kaddus, Mohammad Rehman alias Abdul, Bhutai Yadav and Ramandeep - the process of declaring four other absconding accused proclaimed offenders was also initiated.

Giving details about the prosecution story, Ludhiana CIA inspector Gurbant Singh Bains told The Tribune that the three accused Raman, Sachin and Ramu had worked as class four employees in the school.

Bawa’s confidant cook Kishore Mandal used to tell Raman and Sachin that she has a huge amount of cash and jewellery.

At this, Raman (of Jalandhar) and Sachin (of Bihar) made a plan to loot Rita Bawa. As a part of their plan, Raman kept on working as chowkidar in the college whereas Sachin left the job and went to his village Mirchewali falling under Janki Nagar police station in Purnia of Bihar.

Sachin, along with four other accused Mohammad Kaddus, Mohammad Rehman alias Abdul, Ramu and Manoj Yadav, reached Jalandhar with weapons on June 4 to execute their plan of committing the robbery.

Raman ensured their entry in the college during his duty as chowkidar and hid them at a place behind Bawa’s house. After completing his duty, he also went there, called Rita Bawa’s security guard Tarsem Lal and killed him.

Following this, Raman called Rita Bawa’s other security guard Shamsheedin and murdered him. At this, Raman called Rita Bawa’s confidant cook Kishore Mandal from his room. He was also murdered in the same manner. They pulled out the key of the lock from Kishore’s pocket and opened the lock.

When they reached near Rita Bawa’s bedroom, they found it bolted from inside. Raman asked her to open the room. Probably thinking that Raman was an employee, Rita Bawa unbolted the door.

“Subsequently, they killed Rita Bawa and decamped with a huge amount of cash, jewellery and costly watches,” Bains added.

After committing the sensational crime, Raman used to remain present on his duty whereas the other accused went to Bihar. Mohammad Kaddus and Mohammad Rehman remained absent from their village for some weeks, Bains added.

Meanwhile, Ludhiana SSP RK Jaiswal got some clue in the case and on his request, Punjab DGP handed over the task of investigating the case to him.

Following this, Mohammad Kaddus and Mohammad Rehman were arrested. They told the police about the entire sequence of the crime during their interrogation. As a result, one of the conspirators, Sachin’s father Bhutai Yadav, and Raman were nabbed.

Rita Bawa’s personal mobile and jewellery was also recovered from these three accused. Raman was also arrested and a part of the stolen jewellery was also recovered from him.

War Of Words
Bajwa hits back at Khanna
Chander Parkash/TNS

Gurdaspur, October 4
Senior Congress leader and former minister Partap Singh Bajwa today urged local MP Vinod Khanna to come forward with a documentary proof to establish the fact that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had carried out development in the Majha and Doaba regions in the past one-and-a-half years.

Reacting to the statement made by Khanna, that Bajwa had written an open letter to the people alleging that Badal had discriminated against the Majha and Doaba regions, Bajwa said this statement had proved that Khanna had no clue about the ground realities of development and progress in his constituency.

“Is he even aware of the problems people face at the grass-roots? He asked and added that ensconced in his ‘bollywoodian’ ivory tower, Khanna was far away from the truth,” Bajwa said.

“Would he care to elaborate as to how many and which promises made to the electorate have been fulfilled by the present state government? How can he assert in his bid to please Badal that Gurdaspur has not been discriminated against in the allocation of funds for development to the benefit of Bathinda?” he asked. “Where are the thermal plants in Gurdaspur? Where is the new university? How much money has been allocated for the repair and development of irrigation facilities? Where are funds for the progress of civic works? What other developments have taken place in the district? Khanna should also answer these questions,” Bajwa said.

He said instead of honouring the mandate of the people of Gurdaspur and working for their advantage, Khanna was busy promoting a private university in Himachal Pradesh.

However, Surya Anand, son of the owner of the college and a member of the management committee, refuted the allegations.

He claimed that Basarke’s daughter used to study in the college. “But he refused to give fees and other charges. When the management expressed their displeasure, he started threatening us,” said Anand, whuile claming that their institute is strictly run under the government rules.

Basarke, in turn, said his daughter had to withdraw from the college due to the arrogant attitude of the authorities.
