Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 18
Three children including a newly born baby girl has died of cholera in the resettlement colony in Sector 7, Dwarka, in the last three days and more than 70 people have been admitted to hospitals. Some of them are in a serious condition.

The deceased were identified as Ram Singh, 11, his 10-day old sister and Sapna, another two and a half-year-old girl.

According to sources, the children died in Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. However, spokesman of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has denied that they were admitted to the hospital.

Chiranji Lal, president of the resident welfare association of the colony said that this has happened due to the negligence of the Delhi Development Authority and the Delhi Jal Board. He said that the residents have been complaining about sewer jam and contamination of water to the MCD, Delhi Jal Board and the DDA for the last 20 days. According to the association, they also complained on the helpline of the Delhi government but it had fallen on deaf ear.

Vijay Pandit, area councillor said that the responsibility of cleaning sewer was of the DDA and Delhi Jal Board, but they did nothing.

MCD spokesman said that examination of Ram Singh and Sapna has confirmed that they died of cholera. However, the cause of death of the newly born could not be conformed.

He said that water samples from the area was examined in MCD laboratory, which confirmed that they were contaminated. There was less quantity of chlorine in the water.

He claimed that the MCD is now supplying chlorine tablets to the local residents and is educating them of preliminary precautions. The MCD health team has been deployed in the colony and the situation brought into control. The Jal Board was repairing the damaged water pipelines.

Sanjan Chima, spokesman of the Delhi Jal Board, said Dwarka had been developed by the DDA. Water distribution and sewer were its responsibility.

Meanwhile, today, a DDA executive engineer and a Jal Board official visited the colony. Also, sewer cleaning work and repairing of water pipelines have begun.

MCD School Rape Case
Boost security near schools, Mayor to cops
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 18
Mayor Arti Mehra has written a letter to the Delhi Police commissioner expressing her anguish over the incident of assault which happened yesterday at Ashok Vihar MCD primary school involving its girl students. She has appealed to strengthen security around the schools.

“We are deeply concerned over the fact that the culprits dared to enter the school premises in broad daylight and commit the heinous crime. Needless to say that we together should take all necessary steps that such incidents do not occur in future”, she said.

“Though the MCD is reviewing the security system in its schools and taking measures to strengthen it, yet the role of the Delhi Police is nonetheless very crucial to the safety and security of ten lakh children in 1,850 schools spread in various parts of the city”, the Mayor said.

She appealed to the police commissioner to nab the culprits and punish them. The police should review security scenario at the MCD schools. There is urgent need to increase patrolling around the schools particularly during the assembly, recess and closure time.

Meanwhile, Jai Kishan Sharma, leader of opposition in the MCD and Khawinder Singh Captain, member of the standing committee, today strongly condemned the incident.

They jointly said that it was the worst ever incident in the history of the MCD. It is the result of the lethargy and failure of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Local people, who sat on a dharna informed that three incidents of eve teasing were reported earlier around the school and residents have complained to school authorities but no heed was paid to the complaints. It was this unconcerned attitude of the school that has caused yesterday’s incident.

Sharma disclosed that such incidents of assault on girl students were reported earlier also.

“A principal of Bhajanpura was arrested for assault on a girl student studying in class III. Another principal of Sultanpuri municipal primary school was suspended on the charge of harassing a girl student. A teacher of Mangolpuri M-block was also suspended for assaulting a girl student. Principal of primary school sector-III, Pushp Vihar was also suspended on these charges”, he alleged.

He said that he brought a resolution before the standing committee that no male teacher should be posted in girl schools which although was passed unanimously but not implemented as yet. This clearly reflects the lethargy and bad administration of the BJP.

Sharma and Captain jointly demanded that the Mayor, chairman of the standing committee and the leader of the House should resign from their respective posts on moral grounds.

They also demanded that at least two security guards should be provided to each municipal primary school so as to provide safe and secure environment to children. Till the time these guards are appointed, it has been requested from the Delhi Police to increase patrolling to ensure that such heinous incidents should not occur in future.

Stephen’s creates additional post for
non-Christian teacher

New Delhi, July 18
In a move that may bring about peace between the acting head of St. Stephen’s college and its teaching faculty, an additional teacher’s post has been created and the non-Christian candidate who was earlier bypassed by two Christian candidates has been appointed.

Speaking on behalf of the supreme council of the prestigious but troubled college, advocate Sunil J. Mathews said on Friday that the non-Christian candidate, who is a gold medallist and a former Stephanian, has been given his appointment letter.

“M.S. Frank, the acting head of the college, has created an additional ad-hoc teacher’s position in the history department. This will hopefully restore peace between him and the teaching faculty which was upset over filling up both the vacancies in the department with Christian candidates,” he said.

There was a furore when Frank appointed two Christian candidates as ad-hoc teachers, preferring them over a non-Christian candidate, a preference fiercely opposed by the teaching faculty of the college.

Though a minority institution, St. Stephen’s does not have a quota in teaching appointments. But other things being equal, it does give preference to a Christian candidate, the supreme council had said on Thursday.

“Of course, we give preference to Christian candidates. If there are two applicants with equal minimum qualification and one is a Christian while the other is not, preference will be given to the former. But in no way will the standard of education in the college be compromised,” Matthews had said at a press conference on Thursday.

Supreme council members breathed a sigh of relief after Friday’s development.

“After the furore, there were two options. One, that the appointments were withdrawn and second that an additional post be created to accommodate the third candidate. Frank chose the latter,” Mathews said. — IANS

Tribune News Service

Faridabad, July 18
The police here is in the middle of a controversy, with the parents of a youth today alleging that the latter has lost his mental balance following ill treatment by it.

According to the victim’s family, Jeeteder alias Sonu, 24, a resident of Jawahar Colony here, had left his home on July 13 for his routine morning walk. But after about three hours his father Som Dutt, received a call from the police that he was at Palli Chowki, which falls under the jurisdiction of Sector 55 police station.

When Som Dutt went to the police station he found his son in a kuccha and baniyan. He also had injuries on his body.

According to Som Dutt, when he sought for explanation from the police, it did not give him a satisfactory response.

Sonu was today admtted to Badshah Khan Hospital with psychic problems. Relatives of Sonu alleged that he was normal when he had left the house on July 13. His condition started deteriorating since his stay in the police station. They alleged that Sonu was beaten-up and ill treated at the police station.

However, the police debunks the allegation and says that Sonu was already mentally unstable when he was brought to the station. The police brought him to the station following reports of him throwing stones on passing vehicles.

But the relatives allege that the police was trying to cover up the issue.

They have said that they would move the case to appropirate authorities for justice.

Jap firm offers to develop site of Ghazipur landfill
Ready to pump in Rs 1,000 cr to recycle waste
Syed Ali Ahmed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 18
A Japan-based waste recycling company, Kurahashi Industry Company Limited, has offered to bring in $250 lakh to develop the Ghazipur landfill site into an ‘Eco Town’ of world standard.

The company claims that it will recycle 90 per cent of the waste material dumped at the site.

The company chief executive officer (CEO), Takashi Sagawa, while interacting with members of ASSOCHAM Cool the Earth Initiative Committee said the company had the next-generation technology to recycle 14,000 tonnes per day of waste material that was decaying at the Ghazipur site at present.

The technology, claimed Sagawa, would recycle more than 90 per cent waste of the Ghazipur landfill site which could be reused as materials and clean matter.

The proposal has been submitted to the ASSOCHAM secretary-general, D. S. Rawat, who will forward it to the Central Environment and Forest Ministry and the Delhi government.

Kurahashi Industry Company Limited is in the waste recycling business in many countries and the company’s pre-condition to recycle the waste of the Ghazipur site is to lease out the site to it for a minimum of 30 years, said Rawat.

The Japanese will abandon the site after 30 years and not claim any occupancy right on it thereafter.

The proposal has been forwarded to ASSOCHAM as part of its commitment to cement Indo-Japanese ties in the field of eco-management and environment upgradation.

According to Rawat, the Japanese company is willing to put in around Rs 1,000 crore to cleanse the site of Ghazipur and establish a precedent for getting larger businesses in other locations in and around the NCR and other parts of the country.

Developing the Ghazipur landfill sites has become necessary in view of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, emphasised Rawat.

There are around 2.75 lakh applications for allotment of teh bazaris, which are under consideration with the MCD.
