Spl wing to export farmers’ produce, says Kanwaljit
Jalandhar, November 18 This was stated by Punjab cooperation minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh while speaking at a function organised here on Sunday to launch the “Mai Bhago Istri Shakti Scheme” at a state-level function organised on the occasion of 54th cooperative week. The scheme is aimed at providing more economic autonomy to the women in the state. The minister said approval from the union government had already been taken to export these items. Launching the scheme, the cooperation minister said the government aimed at empowering women by providing more financial independence to them. He said the cooperative department dedicated the day to women empowerment to help generate women
entrepreneurs. Capt Kanwaljit Singh said the scheme was so innovative that it would not only empower women financially but would also generate self-respect among them and ultimately lead to a social transformation where women would have a greater say in the day-to-day affairs. Under the scheme, women societies would be formed which would not only become income generators but would also act as leadership motivators for them. These member societies, totalling 11, would be formed at the village, district and state levels.
The minister said regular inspection of the work of women societies would be carried out annually and the topper would get a reward of Rs 5 lakh which would be given at a state-level function. He said although a constitutional provision had been made for reservation of 33 per cent posts for women in panchayats, block samitis, zila parishads and other institutions, they were not implemented in its real sense. He said the cooperative department would now make efforts to help in developing leadership qualities among women, thereby paving the way for implementation of these provisions. Capt Kanwaljit Singh also said a food processing park at Ludhiana would come up in next one-and-a-half years. Speaking on the occasion, local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia said the cooperative movement was a people's movement which led to inclusion of people in the government. He hoped in the coming days, the movement would gain momentum in the state given the
initiatives launched by the department. |

Post haste: Office downing shutters before time
Phagwara, November 18 The service window for the Speed Post is being closed here before 7 pm for the past several days. Moreover, the main gate of the post office was locked from inside before schedule time. Talking to The Tribune, Phagwara postmaster Baldev Arora said, “Actually, no train service is available after 7 pm and all mails booked after it lies pending for the next day. So, we started closing service before 7 pm.” He disclosed that he had written to the divisional office to change the timings for the Speed Post services in Phagwara office. Interestingly, timings have been changed without any formal permission. During investigations it was found that several trains bound for Delhi, Howrah, Mumbai, Amritsar and Jammu passed through the town till midnight. So shutting the window after 7 pm doesn’t make much sense. Notably, the government had started the service to compete with the private courier companies. |
