Newly-wed falls prey to dowry demon
Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, November 10 But all love stories do not have a happy ending. Soon after the marriage, Tanuja realised Prabhat was not her dream boy. Fed up with the alleged dowry demand, she committed suicide on her first Diwali after marriage by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her house in Mohalla 13 of Jalandhar cantonment. Tanuja’s father Jagdish Chander, a Ludhiana resident, was informed by her in-laws about the incident. He reached Prabhat’s residence within a few hours. Jagdish Chander alleged that Prabhat had been demanding dowry from Tanuja soon after their marriage. She had a fixed deposit (FD) amount of Rs five lakh and Prabhat forced her to withdraw the money deposited in her FD and hand it over to him. “Tanuja was not in favour of withdrawing the money, which resulted in a dispute between them”, Chander said, adding that was the main reason that her daughter was no more. On Jagdish Chander’s statement, an FIR has been lodged against Prabhat Nagpal under section 304 B of IPC at Jalandhar cantonment police station, said the SHO Paramjit Singh while talking to The Tribune. While the police sent the body to the Civil Hospital for post-mortem but it could not arrest the accused till the filing of this news-item, the SHO added. |
