Winning Jalandhar MP seat top priority: Ravi Mahendru
Jalandhar, October 31 As many as 26 local BJP leaders had filed their nominations for the post of BJP city chief but 25 of them withdrew their names, paving the way for the unanimous election of Mahendru, a confidant of Punjab local bodies minister and Jalandhar Central MLA Manoranjan Kalia for this post. Listing his priorities, the councillor said his first job would be to wrest the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat from the Congress and put it in the SAD-BJP’s kitty in the forthcoming general election. Also district BJP unit secretary Mahendru said SAD-BJP candidates registered their victories in all the four Assembly seats falling under the city and similarly the alliance gained power in the municipal corporation elections. He said he would take along all the factions of the party to make it a stronger outfit. “Proper representation would be given to all the factions while appointing office-bearers of the city unit in consultation with the party high command.” Ravi Mahendru was one of the three main contenders for the post of Mayor but the BJP high command preferred Rakesh Rathore for the post, reportedly considering the contribution to the BJP parent body RSS of the latter’s late father Thakur Ganpat Rai. When asked was he feeling now contended after his election as the BJP city chief after dissatisfaction over refusal to mayoral post, he said he was not dissatisfied even earlier. |

Hoshiarpur, October 31 The minister said the government had already earmarked Rs 500 crore for widening and strengthening of roads in Punjab. The SAD-BJP government was pro-poor and for the benefit of the state, new schemes would be introduced. Disclosing the government plans, he said to strengthen the network of canals, a special scheme worth Rs 4,000 crore had been prepared Talking about crops damaged by wild animals in the Kandi area, Dhindsa said the government was serious on the issue and had discussed it at a cabinet meeting. The issue would be sorted out soon. The PWD minister said the toll plazas on build, operate and transfer (BOT) roads were installed by the Congress government during the fag-end of its regime. “During its eight-month rule, the SAD-BJP government has not brought any road under BOT system,” revealed the minister. Earlier, Dhindsa presided over the second day session of the Panjab University Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival being held at GGDSD College, Hariana. |

Jalandhar, October 31 School and college students participated in a painting contest held in the morning session. The themes given for the contest included drug addiction, environmental pollution, unemployment, poverty and certain specific ones for the seniors such as Jallianwala Bagh, Bhagat Singh, Kartar Singh Sarabha and Shaheed Udham Singh. Students used their imagination and colours to come up with the best posters, sceneries and portraits. In group ‘A’, the first, second and third prizes went to Bindu Verma of Apeejay College, Anuj of Apna Sapna School, Phagwara, and Rupali of PCM SD College, respectively. In group ‘B’, Vinod Ahir of Lyallpur Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Jagdeep Walia of Government Model Senior Secondary School and Harjinder Singh of Sant Baba Bhag Singh International School won the top three prizes. Rajinder Singh of Sant Baba Bhag Singh International School, Sukhbir Kaur of Manav Sehyog School and Yogesh of Victor Model School were declared winners in the group ‘C’. Kavi darbar began in the evening with participation from eminent poets, including Tarlochan Lochi, Darshan Buttar, Shabdish, Kulwant, Harvinder Bhandal and Gurbhajan Gill. |
Six held for robbery
Phagwara, October 31 DSP H.P.S. Khakh said the arrested persons were planning a robbery when they were nabbed by a police party led by Satnampura police station in charge Param Sunil Randhawa today. The DSP said the arrests were made under sections 399 and 402 of the IPC. The arrested robbers were identified as Raj Kumar, alias Babbu, Balwinder Singh, alias Pittu, Balbir Singh, Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopa, Vishal and Baldev, alias Vishu, all belonging to Hadiabad. The police has recovered more than half a dozen sharp-edged weapons and a stolen scooter from the accused. The DSP said the accused had confessed to their involvements in looting a truck driver, stealing a scooter, theft in a temple and burglaries in three houses. The arrested robbers were produced before the judicial magistrate who sent them in police remand. |

Phillaur, October 31 A shradhanjali samaroh was organised on the occasion in which tributes were paid to the former Prime Minister. Santokh Singh, in his emotional address, described Indira Gandhi as a secular leader and architect of modern India. He criticised the vindictive policies of the SAD-BJP alliance and described its government as directionless. He alleged that the Akalis always worked to encourage terrorism which would not be tolerated by public at any cost now. |
