Hoshiarpur, November 11
A timely-intervention by Garshankar cops slammed brakes on second marriage plans of an NRI at Padrana village here on Sunday. The police took action after a complaint was filed by NRI’s first wife.

According to the police sources, NRI Parmod Kumar, who hails from Laroa village and had recently come from Italy, got his second marriage arranged with Sukhwinder Kaur, daughter of Ajit Singh of Bakkapur. The wedding was to be solemnised at a marriage palace in Padrana.

However, when Balwinder Kaur, resident of Solra in Kapurthala district came to know about the marriage of her husband she along with her brother lodged a complaint against Parmod Kumar with the Garhshankar police.

Kaur said she was married to Kumar and has a 14-year-old son from him. Their divorce case is pending in an Italy court which had ordered a two-year separation for them.

The divorce proceedings would be finalised after the separation period, which is yet to be completed. “So Parmod’s marriage to Sukhwinder would be illegal as he is yet to obtain a divorce from me,” claimed Balwinder.

Vanquishing darkness with a gift of sight

Nawanshahr, November 11
“Beta main eh akkhan daan karan wala kagaj bhariya hoya hai” (Son, I have filled up a form to donate eyes). These words, spoken by 70-year-old Amro Devi of Adoana village two days before her death, made her family aware of her last wish. The district eye donation society officials were immediately called to do the needful.

In August, three teenage hawkers were crushed by a speeding truck. On the same day, the son of a local BJP leader was murdered. Though the deaths were tragic enough to spread darkness in the lives of the victims’ parents, the latter decided to keep the spirit of mankind alive and light life of others. “We are doing our best to motivate masses to pledge their eyes,” said Dr Jatinder Dev Verma of the eye donation society. "Mankind even after death" is our slogan, says the man.

The society, which was founded around three years ago, has so far received 37 donations and helped 74 persons get their vision back. Rattan Jain, another social worker associated with the society, while giving details to The Tribune, said the society had so far organised about 50 eye donation awareness seminars and distributed literature in different educational institutions, religious and social congregations in the district. At least 1,700 persons have pledged their eyes. Their family members have also been made aware about their donation.

“Besides, there are a number of cases wherein the society has been approached for eye-donation, though the deceased had not pledged their eyes. The changing mind set of the society signifies that people are becoming more and more aware and coming forward for the noble cause”, added Verma. The society has been sending eyes for transplantation to Punarjot Eye Bank, Ludhiana. Besides eye donation, the District Eye Donation Society can also be contacted by blind persons for fulfilling their requirement. As many as 5 visually impaired persons have been provided with the facility of eye transplantation by the society, said Dr. Verma.
