BJP to oppose N-deal in Parliament: Sushma
Ambala, November 11 Talking to mediapersons here today, Sushma Swaraj said the Indo-US nuclear deal was against the nation’s interest. She observed that while Left parties were opposing the nuclear deal simply because they oppose any aspect linked to the US, BJP was opposing the nuclear deal because the deal was not in favour of the nation and India was not on equal footing in the nuclear deal. She stated that they did not want India to be subservient to any nation. The major factor for opposing the nuclear deal was the condition of embargo on further nuclear tests. She said there should not be any such condition, as India should be treated at par with other nuclear nations. The party wanted to acquire full nuclear capabilities as the nation was surrounded by two nuclear powers, China and Pakistan, she added. Sushma said the formation of the BJP government in Karnataka tomorrow would help the party consolidate its pan-India strength. Answering a query, she said the possibility of mid-term poll had reduced. Earlier, there was a strong chance of mid-term poll as circumstances had been created but now the situation had changed. She demanded that the President’s rule should be imposed in West Bengal due to the ongoing violence in Nandigram. She said the state sponsored violence was a matter of grave concern. A delegation of party leaders would be shortly going to West Bengal to look into the situation. Sushma the two states, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, were going in for Assembly elections. She said while in Gujarat, the BJP would retain power, in Himachal Pradesh the BJP would wrest power from the Congress. She said the party was not in favour of acquisition of fertile land for setting up Special Economic Zones. |
Hooda forays into Bhajan stronghold
Hisar, November 11 The visit came weeks before the Bhajan Lal camp’s proposed rally at Rohtak (Hooda’s hometown) on December 2. Clearly, the daylong exercise was aimed at winning support for himself in the Bishnoi belt. At Mangali, a Bishnoi-dominated village near here, Hooda was honoured by seven sarpanches from nearby villages which are considered Bhajan Lal’s stronghold. The Chief Minister announced a grant of Rs 1 crore for the village. The bonanza is widely considered as a reward for the support to Hooda. This was Hooda’s third major foray into Adampur since taking over as Chief Minister in March 2007. Hooda began his visit with a press conference at which he described the vastly improved law and order situation as one of his biggest achievements. He said organised crime had been rooted out as most criminals had either been killed in encounters or had fled from Haryana. He also claimed the credit for making Haryana the state with the highest per capita income. Hooda said he had laid great stress on improving the quality of education and health services and the efforts had succeeded to a great extent. He said the setting up an all-women university at Khanpur would go a long way in promoting women education in Haryana. He disclosed that his government had not acquired a single inch of land for SEZs in Haryana. Land was being acquired by companies themselves at market rates from farmers willing to sell it. He said the SEZs would generate employment for 20 lakh people. Hooda said power shortage was the creation of successive governments in the past which did not increase generation to keep pace with consumption. Haryana Congress working president Kuldeep Sharma made scathing attacks on Bhajan Lal and his Lok Sabha member son Kuldeep Bishnoi. He said Bishnoi had promised to bring big industrial projects to his constituency during the elections. However, he was now opposing all industrial projects initiated by the Hooda government. Likewise, chief parliamentary secretary Dharamvir also criticised the Bhajan Lal clan for ignoring the interests of the people of Haryana. The Chief Minister was accompanied by housing minister Savitri Jindal and MP Jai Parkash. |
Ultimatum to govt against ‘abolishing’ Sanskrit
Rohtak, November 11 This was stated by Acharya Baldev, president of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Haryana, at a state-level “Sanskrit Bachao” convention organised under the aegis of the Haryana Sanskrit Raksha Sangharsh Samiti here today. Representatives of more than 30 “gurukuls” and “ashrams”, besides nearly 80 Sanskrit colleges, schools and other educational institutions located in different parts of the state participated in the convention. Office-bearers of the Haryana Sanskrit Adhyapak Sangh also attended the meeting. Speakers criticised the state government for its “anti-Sanskrit” stance and asked it to reconsider its decision of reducing the significance of Sanskrit as a subject. Later, the participants marched in protest from Dayanand Math to the residence of the local deputy commissioner and submitted a charter of demands to the Chief Minister through him. The convention gave a one-month ultimatum to the Haryana government to fulfil the demands enlisted in the memorandum. The main demands include making Sanskrit a compulsory subject from classes VI to XII, provision for adequate financial aid for Sanskrit-teaching institutions and ensuring the appointment of Sanskrit lecturers in all senior secondary schools. |

Rabi Season
Bhiwani, November 11 Farmers said the time for sowing rabi crops was running out and sowing is yet to take place on more than 60 per cent land in the district whereas the government had failed to provide even seven- hour uninterrupted power supply to the agriculture sector in this area so far. The Bhartiya Kisan Union of the area has threatened of holding a mahapanchayat at Dhigava powerhouse on November 14 to answer the apathetic attitude of the state government. District president of the union Mewa Singh Arya, while presiding over a meeting at Kisan Bhawan, Loharu, today said the farmers of the district were finding themselves helpless as sowing season was passing rapidly and despite the promises by the district administration and electricity department authorities, they were not getting enough power supply. Azad Singh, president of Dhigava zone, said the sowing season of rabi crops like mustard, wheat and gram had been marred by the erratic power supply. He alleged that the authorities even disconnected 12 tubewell connections at Jui, Behal, Dhigava and Loharu areas and now the present government had launched a self-connection scheme following the footsteps of the previous INLD government. Under the scheme, the farmer would install transformer, electricity wire etc on his own, which would cost him about Rs 1.50 lakh, which was indeed an extra burden on farmer, he expressed, adding that the government had not yet changed the horticulture connections so far in spite of promise. The meeting demanded 12 hours of uninterrupted power supply, to stop self-scheme for new tubewell connections, to settle overloaded 132 KV substations of Jui, Dhigava and Badhra, to start 33 KV substations of Singhani and Budhera from this month and to restore slab system for the farmers of southern Haryana. |
Fight casteism, female foeticide: Agnivesh
Karnal, November 11 Swami Agnivesh was honoured with the Bhai Kanahiya Sadhbhavna Award at a function organised by the National Integrated Forum of Artistes and Activists (NIFAA) at the gurdwara. He lauded the efforts made by the NIFAA to propagate the message of Bhagat Singh and educate people about various social evils. He said in spite of the efforts to educate people to shun casteism, it was still very well entrenched in the psyche of the people. “I request the Government of India to do away with the column of caste in various forms, whether for examinations or employment. It is okay if one is asked to mention whether he belongs to OBC, SC or ST category, but not caste,” Swami Agnivesh said. He said the Arya Samaj had launched a movement during which people who married inter-caste and who did not ask for dowry were honoured. The revival of such movements would encourage more and more youth to marry persons of their choice rather than dictated by caste, he added. “We will also request the government to reserve 5 per cent seats in government jobs for people who have inter-caste marriages,” he said. Swami Agnivesh said since 2004, when he took over as the president of the World Council of Arya Samaj, a record 80,000 new members had been inducted into the Arya Samaj movement. He said he would strive to remove differences, if any, between the Sikhs and the Arya Samaj and would continue to propagate the message of Guru Nanak. “We are going to launch a new programme to rid the society of intoxicants like liquor, cigarettes, drugs etc. For this we are in touch with the governments of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi,” he said. Swami Agnivesh said it was condemnable that nowadays religion was being used for gaining political mileage. He said the Ram Setu controversy was nothing but the exploitation of the name of Ram for making political issue. |

War over water hots up
Chandigarh, November 11 While at one hand the state government is fighting Punjab and Rajasthan on the issue of the Hansi-Butana multipurpose link canal before the Supreme Court and the Central Water Commission (CWC), on the other the ruling party has to take on two former Chief Ministers, Om Prakash Chautala and Bhajan Lal. Both Punjab and Rajasthan have approached the apex court urging it to restrain Haryana from puncturing the Bhakra Main Line (BML) canal for taking its share of water for the Hansi-Butana canal. The apex court has asked the CWC to examine the technical aspects of the objections raised by Punjab and Rajasthan. The Hansi-Butana canal is a project of personal prestige for Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda who had promised before the Assembly elections that he would ensure equitable distribution of irrigation water available in the state. To achieve this aim, the Hansi-Butana canal was envisaged so that the Bhakra water could be taken to southern parts of the state. If Hooda is able to fulfill his promise, he would be known as “modern-day Bhagirath of Haryana”. According to the Hindu mythology, Bhagirath was responsible for bringing the Ganga to the earth from the heavens. Realising the political implications of the canal, Chautala and Bhajan Lal, whose native districts of Sirsa and Hisar are main beneficiaries of inequitable distribution of the Bhakra water, are not favourably disposed towards the Hansi-Butana canal. It is widely perceived in the state that the Akali opposition to the canal is primarily because of the close relations between the Chautalas and the Badals. Taking up the battle on behalf of his father, MP from Rohtak Deepinder Singh Hooda today challenged Chautala and Bhajan Lal to make clear their stand on the Hansi-Butana canal. He criticised them for adopting “cheap political gimmicks” to create hindrances in the construction of the canal, which is an emotive issue in southern Haryana. The junior Hooda gave a call to the people of southern Haryana that they should ask them and their sons the reason for creating hurdles in the way of their due share in the water, whenever they happened to visit their area. He said the canal was being constructed to ensure supply of due share of water to 16 districts, including Mahendragarh, Rewari, Jhajjar and Gurgaon. He said his father firmly believed that if the canals in Sirsa and Adampur (Assembly constituency of Bhajan Lal) were supplying water for 20 days in a month, the canals of Mahendragarh and Rewari should also remain functional for an equal number of days. It may be recalled that during the last Assembly session, a house committee was set up to study how Haryana’s interests on the Yamuna water were harmed when Bhajan Lal was the Chief Minister. The committee is part of the ruling party’s arsenal to fight its political opponents in the war over water, which may be a major issue, at least in southern Haryana, during the next elections. Its report is likely to come before the poll. |
