Phagwara, November 14 The state government would contribute Rs 28 crore for these projects, she said, adding that the total grant would be doubled next year. The Centre would set up a national urban health mission on the pattern of the NRHM next year. This was disclosed by Union health minister Ambumani Ramadoss to Chawla at a meeting held at New Delhi yesterday. Talking about some of the focus areas, Chawla said, “We have kicked off a campaign to bring down the infant mortality rate from 40 to 30 per 1,000 in a year. The national average stands at 58 per 1,000. In order to achieve that, 15,000 women, including daughters and daughters-in-law of the villages, would be provided proper training.” Chawla, along with medical education minister Tikshan Sood, urged the Union health minister to include the under-construction Jalandhar Medical College and Hospital in the list of six major medical institutions which were being provided facilities like the AIIMS. She announced that one ayurvedic and homoeopathic dispensary would be set up in each civil hospital of the state. When asked about shortage of doctors and mismatching of doctors in civil hospitals, she said the state government was fully aware of this problem. She said 147 specialist doctors would be recruited soon. Answering a question on adulterated products, the minister said, “After success of the campaign against adulterated sweets and khoya, the health department would now launch a state-level campaign against sale of synthetic milk.” Chawla disclosed that all district health officers and food inspectors had been clarified that if they succeeded to catch any consignment of synthetic milk or adulterated khoya, they would be awarded. But if other authorities caught illegal consignments in their areas then it would be assumed that they were partnering with the anti-social elements and would be held responsible. “State-level campaign would soon be launched against quackery and sale of drugs. She said chemists would be under a strict vigil regarding sale of medicines.” When asked about shortage of medicines in civil hospitals, Chawla said a state-level committee had been set up to purchase medicines and monitor the process. She, however, admitted that the government had no plan to purchase new ultra modern machinery and medical equipment. Chawla ordered immediate posting of a gynaecologist in the Phagwara civil hospital. |
