Pakistan clinch consolation win
Jaipur, November 18
Half centuries by Rohit Sharma (52) and Yuvraj Singh (50) and a knock of 44 runs by Irfan Pathan proved insufficient as India were all out for 275 in 49.5 overs. Earlier, a record 168-run stand between Shoaib Malik (89) and Mohammad Yousuf (74) helped Pakistan survive S Sreesanth's three-wicket burst and post 306-6. Put in to bat, Pakistan slumped to 77 for three inside 17th overs before Yousuf and Malik propped up the side with the fourth wicket stand that not only stemmed the rot but also laid the foundation for the mammoth total. For India, Sreesanth was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three for 52 in 10 overs. India have already won the five-match series by taking an unassailable 3-1 lead in the previous tie at Gwalior. That none of the teams took the match seriously was more than evident from the fact that both sides made wholesale changes to their line-up to rest some of the regulars and try out a few bench warmers. Sourav Ganguly joined Zaheer Khan, RP Singh and Harbhajan Singh in the sidelines, paving way for Rohit Sharma, Murali Kartik, S Sreesanth and UP allrounder Praveen Kumar, who made his ODI debut today. Pakistan also fielded a second string side, leaving out Shahid Afridi, Younis Khan, Shoaib Akhtar and Kamran Akmal while bringing in Fawad Alam, Imran Nazir, Yasir Hameed and rookie stumper Sarfraz Ahmed, who also earned his first ODI cap. Realising the dew factor might make it difficult for the bowlers to grip the ball in the second innings, Dhoni had little hesitation to insert Pakistan after he won the boss and tossed the ball to Praveen to open the attack. Praveen began his international career with a maiden over while Sreesanth too looked tidy as Pakistan crawled to 18 in the first five
overs. Pakistani opener Salman Butt and Imran Nazir, however, soon broke the shackles and freed their arms. Nazir attacked Praveen while Butt helped him to some easy boundaries off both Praveen and Irfan Pathan. Having reached 50 in 67 balls, Pakistan cruised to crisis as Sreesanth letting out his pent-up frustrations at being ignored in the previous matches came up with a three-wicket burst in a span of three overs to rock the visitors. The slide started in the 13th over when Sreesanth induced Butt for a pull and Rohit Sharma took the top edge at mid-on. In his next over, Yasir Hameed (1) was done in by extra bounce as he perished caught behind and Sreesanth returned to catch Imran
Nazir’s full-blooded drive off his own bowling for his 50th wicket in
ODIs. From 65 for no loss, Pakistan stuttered to 77 for three and things looked pretty bleak for the visitors. The bailout job was then left to Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik and they not only arrested the slide but also propped up the innings with a sensible partnership. Pakistan reached the three-figure mark in 21.3 overs and the next fifty came in 10 overs. As if insisting that the burden of captaincy has not bogged him down, Malik stepped out to hit Virender Sehwag over midwicket for a sweet six and then meted out the same treatment to Kartik after completing his fifty. Malik almost perished on 28 but Yuvraj Singh could not hold on to the difficult catch at cover off Murali
Kartik. Scoreboard Pakistan innings: Butt c Praveen b Sreesanth 36 Imran Nazir c & b Sreesanth 20 Yasir Hameed c Dhoni

Yuvi batting responsibly: Dhoni
Jaipur, November 18 "When the opposition scores more than 300, you need to maintain the run rate for a successful chase. Otherwise, it keeps mounting and creates pressure," Dhoni said after India fell short by 31 runs at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium. "The initial wickets they took hampered our chase. From then on, we were always trying to catch up and it became difficult," he said. However, Dhoni, who won his first ODI series as captain, lauded the effort of the team in the five-match rubber. "We played well. We were good in batting and bowling. We did not field well and there is scope of improvement there. We are working on that and, hopefully, we will be an improved side," he said. Dhoni added that Sachin Tendulkar, with his "aggressive batting," played a major role in the series win. "Sachin has been doing that for more than 15 years. There is nothing to be said about him. He is playing aggressively," the captain said. He also said that Yuvraj Singh, who was chosen man of the series, was taking up a lot of responsibility and that augurs well for the team. "He is batting with responsibility and that is good for the team. He is proving a point." Asked about youngster Rohit Sharma's knock today, Dhoni said, "He was under pressure when he went out to bat. This was a match where guys, who sit outside, got an opportunity to play and that is important for the team." Picking 5 bowlers worked: Malik Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik said the victory would boost the confidence of the side ahead of the three match Test series. "We are going into the Test series and this victory will give us confidence," Malik said. He said that playing five bowlers did the trick for the team today. "We were playing five bowlers after a long time and that worked for us. Credit to the whole team for their effort," he said. Asked about his own form, Malik, who scored 89 today, said "It is good that I got those runs today before the Test series." — PTI |

Centurion, November 18 South Africa won by an innings and 59 runs in the seventh over after tea on the third day to sweep the series 2-0. The hosts won the first Test in Johannesburg by 358 runs, South Africa's biggest win and New Zealand's heaviest defeat in terms of runs. Steyn, who took match figures of 10-93 in the first Test and 4-42 in the first innings in Centurion, claimed 6-49 in the second innings.
Steyn's haul of 10-91 was his career-best performance in a Test. New Zealand, who needed 195 to make South Africa bat again, were bowled out for 136 in their second innings with Stephen Fleming's 54 their top score. Fast bowler Mark Gillespie took 5-136 as South Africa were dismissed for 383 in their only innings.
Hashim Amla, who scored 176 not out in the first Test in Johannesburg, added another century with a disciplined 103.
Amla's patient innings ended when he drove uppishly at a delivery from medium pacer Iain O'Brien and was caught by a diving Michael Papps in the covers. Scoreboard New Zealand (1st innings) 188 South Africa (1st innings) Smith b Martin 2 Gibbs b Martin

Lee strikes as Aussies take control
Hobart, November 18 Spearheaded by paceman Brett Lee, the Australians cleaned up the tourists for 296 for a massive 299-run first innings lead bolstered to 407 runs by stumps after skipper Ricky Ponting opted against enforcing the follow-on. At close, Australia were 111 for one with in-form opener Phil Jaques chasing his third consecutive century on 53 and Ponting on
seven. Muttiah Muralitharan claimed his 704th Test wicket, having Matthew Hayden leg before wicket for 33, to leave him just four wickets adrift of Shane Warne's world record of 708 wickets. The Sri
Lankans, down to just three frontline bowlers with seamer Farveez Maharoof out of action with an ankle injury, posed little threat to Australia. Lee, man-of-the-match with eight wickets in last week's Brisbane Test win, again spearheaded the Australian attack with 4-82 off 23.2 overs for the home side to take a firm grip on the
Test. Mahela Jayawardene played a captain's knock with a fighting 104, his 19th Test century and first against Australia as wickets tumbled around him. Scoreboard Australia (1st innings) 542-5

Kaneria ‘ready’ for India tour
Karachi, November 18 "You look at the score sheet and the Indian team has some great batsmen but that is the challenge trying to get through them. If we bowl well with discipline as a team we can beat India in this series," Kaneria told PTI in an interview today. "I am prepared and I have done some homework on the Indian batsmen. But in the end it is all about bowling with discipline and patience," he
said. Kaneria joins the Pakistan Test squad in New Delhi tomorrow for the three-match series after his side lost the five-match one-day series. He leaves with batsman Faisal Iqbal and pacer Mohammad Sami to join the team. "The positive thing is that in India they play with the SG ball which gives spinners a good grip and their pitches also normally encourage some spin," he
said. Kaneria, who has 208 wickets in 48 Tests, said the experience of the 2005 tour would also help him a lot because he learnt a lot in that series and became a more confident and better bowler. "The more you bowl against top batsmen the more you learn and become consistent." He also credited his success in Test cricket to former captain Inzamam-ul
Haq. "Inzamam understood my bowling and as a captain he was very good at handling me. He had a lot of confidence in my bowling and kept on pushing me to do a lot of bowling which I enjoyed," said the bowler, who took 19 wickets on his last Test tour to India in
2005. Kaneria said he was hopeful that new captain Shoaib Malik would also repose confidence in
him. "Malik has played under Inzamam and knows how he handled me. I am confident he will also use me to the best of abilities and at the times when I can deliver best for the team," the leg-spinner said. The 26-year-old pointed out that it was very important for a leg-spinner to have a good captain backing him all the way. "A leg spinner is an attacking bowler and needs his captain to have confidence in him. Imran Khan depended a lot on Abdul Qadir while Wasim Akram had the same faith in Mushtaq Ahmed. "Shane Warne has enjoyed such a lot of success because he has played under some very good captains." Kaneria said he has a very good rapport with his new captain. "I don't have problems being a stock bowler and sending down long spells. But I want wickets because that is my main task. I am ready to do a lot of bowling in India." Kaneria said that he was going to India well prepared as he had a good workout against South Africa and had been playing lot of domestic cricket. The bowler said he was disappointed not to be part of the one-day team in India but said this had also allowed him to celebrate Diwali with his family.

Euro 2008
London, November 18 Spain, Croatia, Poland and the Netherlands also advanced to next year's tournament in Austria and Switzerland. Defending champion Greece, three-time winner Germany, the Czech Republic and Romania had already qualified for the 16-team event. The final four spots are still to be decided. Israel scored a late winner to beat Russia 2-1, putting Croatia into the final tournament and keeping England in realistic contention. Making his 50th appearance for the Azzurri, veteran fullback Panucci headed in a free kick by Andrea Pirlo after Barry Ferguson's 65th-minute goal had equalised a goal scored by Luca Toni in the second minute. Yesterday's victory has put Italy at the top of Group B with 26 points from 11 games. France is second with 25 points and Scotland has 24, having lost its 12th and final game. Even with no chance of qualifying, Israel took a 10th-minute lead through Elyaniv Barda only for Diniyar Bilyaletdinov to level for Russia in the 61st. Russia almost scored in the 90th, but Dmitry Sychev's shot hit the post with the goalkeeper beaten. Omer Golan captured the points for Israel with a breakaway goal three minutes into injury time. The result put Group E leader Croatia into the finals because Russia can't catch the Croats. It also means that the Russians remain two points behind England going into the final round of games on Wednesday. Although Russia should comfortably beat last-place Andorra, England now needs only a point against Croatia at Wembley. Group C is also going down to the final round of games, even though Greece was already sure of one of the spots before its 5-0 crushing of Malta. Turkey came from behind to leapfrog Norway into second place by winning 2-1 in Oslo. Erik Hagen gave the Norwegians a 12th-minute lead and the home side appeared on course to guaranteeing a place. But Emre Belozoglu and Kahveci Nihat hit back for the visitors, which now holds a one-point advantage over Norway going into Wednesday's matches. Poland reached its first European Championship by beating Belgium 2-0 with goals by Euzebiusz. Finland scored twice in the last 11 minutes to beat Azerbaijan 2-1 and maintain its slim chances of advancing from Group A. Mikael Forssell and Shefki Kuqi scored after Makhmud Gurbanov had threatened an upset for last-place Azerbaijan. Portugal edged Armenia 1-0 but still needs a point against Finland to ensure qualification. Serbia's game against Kazakhstan in Belgrade was postponed because of heavy snow. The Czech Republic, which beat neighbour Slovakia 3-1, and Germany, which outplayed Cyprus 4-0, have already captured the two spots from Group D. Danny Koevermans scored for the Netherlands in its 1-0 victory over last-place Luxembourg in Group G, and it was enough to capture a qualifying spot along with Romania, which lost at Bulgaria 1-0.

Virtuoso Federer seals Masters title
Shanghai, November 18 The Swiss defending champion dominated his fifth consecutive year-end final from the outset, winning 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in just one hour and 38 minutes. Federer leaves with $ 1.2 million in prize money, pushing his season earnings to a record $ 8,630,620, and a Mercedes-Benz car. "I'm so happy," Federer beamed. "This is the year-end tournament championship where only the best play so for me to have won this yet again is a great experience. Federer entered the final as strong favourite against the sixth-ranked Ferrer after routing Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal to reach the final. He volleyed his way out of a break point in his first service game and turned the tables with a mesmerising lob-and-volley in Ferrer's next game, converting the first break point as the Spaniard netted. Ferrer was wilting visibly in the face of Federer's all-round onslaught and double-faulted to go two breaks down, and then netted a backhand to give up the set in just 26 minutes. The terrier-like Ferrer is known for his chasing but it was Federer who was covering the court, cracking unerring backhands past the Spaniard, who hit a wild forehand to go 3-4 down in the second and was broken again to lose the set. Federer fended off three break points at the start of the third and bent a running forehand past Ferrer to go 3-1 up, then completed the demolition by breaking again with another forehand winner. Federer won the Masters Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2006. Only three players - Ilie Nastase, Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras - have won the season-ending tournament four times or more. It was Federer's 70th career final against just nine for Ferrer, highlighting the gulf between them. Ferrer, who was competing in his biggest ever match, has taken just one set off Federer in their eight meetings, all of which he lost. The 25-year-old has enjoyed his best season yet, winning three tournaments and reaching a career-high sixth ranking. He was unbeaten in reaching the final, shocking compatriot Nadal along the way. Federer, 26, was upset by Fernando Gonzalez in his opening match at the eight-man, 4.45-million-dollar event but then beat Nikolay Davydenko, Roddick and arch-rival Nadal. Twelve-time Grand Slam winner Federer has won another seven tournaments this year including the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, taking his number of titles to 52 and earning $ eight million for the second season in a row.

Teja shines in drawn match
Mohali, November 18 Their inexperienced seam bowling looked stingless as their second Elite Group Ranji Trophy Super League match against Hyderabad fizzled out as a tame draw today. Hyderabad started today’s play from the score of 85 for 2. Having conceded a crucial 23-run first innings lead to Hyderabad yesterday, Punjab seamers struggled today even after seamer Manpreet Gony got an early breakthrough for his team sending back Arjun Yadav with the addition of 10 runs to the overnight team total. After the fall of this wicket, Ravi Teja and Amol Shinde combined well to frustrate the Punjab seam bowling attack. Teja, in particular, batted in a fluent manner and did the bulk of the scoring, while Shinde, though comparatively subdued, did not lose out on any opportunity to score runs. Teja went on to complete his maiden century before he fell leg before to Amanpreet. Teja scored an impressive 111. After his fall, no other batsmen could stay long at the wicket. Young leg-spinner Sarabjit Ladda took charge at this stage and dealt vital blows. He claimed four scalps in all as the visitors were bundled out for 276, leaving Punjab with an improbably victory target of 300 runs. India Test player and Hyderabad skipper, Laxman, who had been troubled by the back pain during the match and did not field earlier, ended a fruitless outing. Batting down the order, the batsman scored 26 before becoming a Gony victim. In the second essay also, at fag end of play, Punjab batsmen did nothing of note. Seamer Ashwin Yadav did not allow the key batsmen to gain batting practice ahead of the next match. He kept on striking blow after blow, while left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha chipped in with one wicket as Punjab were left tottering at 75 for four after 28 overs at close. Hyderabad got three points from the drawn match, while the hosts will have to be content with a sole point. Jeev rallies to finish tied 5th
Chandigarh, November 18 This was a vast improvement over last week's 45th placement in the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters where he finished with a four-day tally of one-under par 289. His eight-under on the Phoenix greens sets him on the right track for defending the two back-to-back wins he scored last year in the Casio World Open and Golf Nippon Series. The next two events on the Japan Golf Tour must be a reminder to the 35-year-old Chandigarh golfer as it catapulted him to the top 50 ranking of world golf. Jeev started with a one-under par 71 on day one of the Dunlop Phoenix event. He played a par game on the second day. A four-under and a three-under on the last two days saw him occupy the tied fifth spot. Today Jeev had a blemish-free first nine of three-under with three birdies. He lost a stroke on the 10th hole, but made amends with a birdie on the 13th for a three-under 69 card on the final day. In the Asian Tour, Shiv Kapur of Delhi played a bad two-over card of 72 to finish tied 12th in the $2.25 million UBS Hong Kong Open on the par-70 greens of the Hong Kong Golf Club today.
