Ram Setu Issue
VHP, BJP workers block roads
Tribune Reporters

Hisar, September 12
Workers of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bharatiya Janata Party blocked roads at several points in the town this morning to protest against the proposed demolition of Ram Setu.

A handful of them squatted on the Old Overbridge crossing and raised slogans. They carried saffron flags.

The protest led to traffic jams at many places. Hundreds of students failed to make it to their schools and colleges because of the blockage. Long queues of vehicles were seen on both sides of the Delhi Road during the blockage.

KARNAL: Members of the local unit of the Ram Setu Raksha Manch (RRM) briefly blocked National Highway-1 near the Balri bypass here on Wednesday protesting against the Centre’s proposal to dredge a canal through the Ram Setu to shorten the distance between the eastern and western coast of the country.

Dr Gopal Krishan, patron of the Karnal wing of the RMM, said it was under US pressure that the Indian government was trying to harm the historical bridge.

“Thorium is found in large quantities in that area, which can be used to generate electricity. Once a canal is constructed there it will endanger the national security of the country as the area will become more accessible to outsiders,” he said.

Jeet Singh Khurana, secretary of the local unit of the RMM, said if the work on the canal was not stopped, they would organise rallies and dharnas in towns and villages and would march to Delhi and gherao Parliament on December 20.

YAMUNANAGAR: Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the RSS blocked traffic at four places in the district as part of the nationwide call of ‘chakka jam’ given by the VHP against the move of the UPA government to demolish Ram Setu here on Wednesday.

A large number of VHP workers gathered at the chowk raising slogans against the government.

ROHTAK: Activists of various ‘saffron’ organisations under the aegis of the Rameshwar Ram Setu Raksha Manch blocked the Delhi-Hisar National Highway at three points and held protest demonstrations against the government’s move to dismantle Ram Setu.

The police resorted to a mild lathi-charge in order to get roads cleared. General secretary of the Haryana BJP Capt Abhimanyu said several protesters, including some saints, were injured in the lathi-charge.

REWARI: Activists of the Rameshwaram Ram Setu Raksha Manch (RRSRM), BJP, Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Shiv Sena (BSS), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal held demonstrations and also blocked vehicular traffic for brief spells at various chowks of the city on Wednesday demanding overhauling of the construction plan of the Setu Samadaram Ship Channel Project in Tamil Nadu to ensure total immunity of the Ram Setu from its impending destruction.

Former MLA hurt; road rail traffic blocked
Tribune Reporters

Ambala, September 12
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists and the Bharatiya Janata Party workers attempted to block the Ambala-Hisar highway over the Ram Setu issue this morning.

The police resorted to lathi charge to clear the highway near the Aggarsain chowk even as a district administration official, who was mistaken for an activist, was manhandled by a policeman.

The activists had begun assembling near the Aggarsain chowk since morning. The police was deployed to ensure that the highway was not blocked by the protesters.

When the activists started marching towards the chowk, the police officials tried to dissuade them. However, the activists were insistent and they stated that they would block the highway to protest over the centre’s stand on the Ram Setu issue.

Thereafter, the police resorted to lathi charge. At least five persons, including Dr Sanjay Sharma and former MLA Veena Chibber, received injuries in the lathi charge.

While the activists were dispersed from the area, Dr Sharma and Chibber were taken to police chowki No.3. They were later released.

Dr Sharma complained of uneasiness and was taken to the Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantonment.

Former Ambala MP Ratan Lal Kataria condemned the lathi charge on the activists. “It is a shame that VHP activists were attacked by the police,” he said.

Later, a delegation led by Ratan Lal Kataria met superintendent of police K.V. Ramana and apprised him of the situation.

Ramana said the situation was under control and there were scattered incidents of protests by VHP activists in different parts of the district.

Similar protests were held in Ambala Cantonment and Mullana. While in Ambala Cantonment the protest was briefly held near the Civil Hospital chowk on the Jagadhari road, in Mullana VHP activists attempted to block the highway. However, the police cleared the highway.

Earlier, during the demonstration, a district administration official was manhandled by a policeman when the former had gone to the spot to accept a memorandum from the activists. The policeman apparently mistook the official for a VHP activist.

The police constable who manhandled the official tendered his apology over the incident. He, however, later denied that any such incident had taken place.

Gang of criminals busted
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 12
The Haryana police today claimed a major success in apprehending four members of a dreaded inter-district gang of criminals, popularly known as the Pardeep Jamawari gang.

Director-general of the Haryana police R.S. Dalal said here today that the gang also indulged in stealing costly idols from temples, besides committing crimes like murder and dacoity.

He said IG, Hisar range, Yash Pal Singal, and SP, Hisar, Shrikant Jadhav constituted a special team to keep an eye on the activities of the gang. On receipt of a secret information yesterday, a trap was laid on the Dhakal Road, Narwana.

The police had learnt that Sunil Tarkha, a prominent member of the gang, along with his associates would be coming to Narwana from Lehragaga in Punjab. The Jind police also associated in the operation against the gang.

As soon as the car in which the criminals were travelling was sighted, the police team signalled it to stop. However, the criminals sped away the vehicle and dashed against an electric poll. Instead of surrendering before the police, the criminals allegedly opened fire, which was returned by the policemen. Tarkha and Anand, alias Sandeep, were, however, apprehended, while four of their associates escaped.

Meanwhile, the Jind police also arrived and a combing operation was launched in which two more criminals, Pardeep, alias Deepa, and Labh Singh, were arrested. However, the other two escaped.

Dalal said a .9mm Mouser and one country-made pistol along with live cartridges were recovered from the criminals.

The gang had been active in the districts of Hisar, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Jind, Kaithal and Fatehabad for the past four years.

Feeling unsafe, Balmikis shift to Delhi
B.S. Malik

Sonepat, September 12
Despite the safety and security arrangements made by the district administration, almost all families of the Gohana Balmiki basti have migrated to Delhi after locking their houses.

Four families, including that of Rakesh, alias Lara, who was shot dead by three persons on August 27 have already gone to Delhi. They have reportedly taken shelter in a Balmiki temple on Panchkuian Road in New Delhi.

Dalit leader Pran Ratnakar said 76 families had already reached the temple in Delhi while many others were on the way.

Ratnakar blamed the Chief Minister for not keeping his promises made during his meeting with representatives of the Balmiki community in Delhi last week.

“The Chief Minister did not even transfer Gohana DSP Arun Nehra, which was one of our main demands,” he said, alleging that there was a threat to the life of people of the Balmiki basti.

He said Dalit organisations would gherao Parliament on September 14, seeking the dismissal of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

“Dalit communities are not safe under the rule of Hooda,” he alleged.

Dhankar to continue as VC — for now
Sunit Dhawan
Tribune News Service

Rohtak, September 12
Putting the widespread speculations regarding the appointment of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) vice-chancellor to rest - at least for the time being - the state authorities have asked the present incumbent, Prof R.S. Dhankar, to continue in office for the time being.

The tenure of Dhankar will expire tomorrow. While lobbying for the coveted post had already begun, speculations of Dhankar getting an extension were also rife.

However, ending all conjectures regarding the matter, the office of the Haryana Governor-cum-MDU chancellor, Dr A.R. Kidwai, today sent a communiqué to the university, asking the vice-chancellor to continue in office till further orders.

As the news regarding the grant of “extension” to Dhankar as MDU vice-chancellor spread on campus, members of certain student organisations expressed happiness by distributing sweets.

It was not long back that the state authorities had ordered the constitution of a search committee to identify a suitable candidate for the post.

However, a little later, the proposal regarding the constitution of the search committee was shelved with the MDU authorities being asked not to go ahead with finalising their nominee.

Now, even as the MDU campus as well as educational circles across the state were abuzz with rumours regarding the grant of extension to the present vice-chancellor or appointment of a new one, the state authorities have again sprung a surprise by asking Dhankar to continue.

Locals said when she came in contact with the wire, a loud thud was heard and electric equipments in several houses in the locality were damaged.

Sources in the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) said no houses could be constructed in the area from where overhead transmission line of 66 kV passed.

Hundreds of houses, particularly in Amarpuri, the Bank colony and the Tilak Nagar area have come up below the transmission lines.

Residents of the colony said the property dealers who sold them the plots had promised them that the lines would be shifted later on.

“The property dealers befooled us,” said Shimal Devi, who had bought a house here about three years ago.
