Twenty-two-year-old Virender, an inmate of the local prison here, allegedly committed suicide last night. He hailed from Kabarchha village and was undergoing a jail-term of 10 years after being convicted in a gang-rape case in February last.

20,000 Dalit families to get water connections

About Rs 100 crore will be spent on improving water supply and sewer system during the current year in urban and rural areas of this district. As many as 20,000 Dalit families in Kaithal, Kalayat, Guhla, Pai , Pundri and Rajound Assembly segments will be provided water connections under the Indira Gandhi drinking water supply scheme this year.

Water level improves in Yamuna

The water level in the Yamuna was on the rise and discharge in the two canals- the western Yamuna canal and the eastern Yamuna canal-offtaking from the river was as per the indents issued by shareholder states in the river water.

42 teachers selected for State Award

The Haryana Government has selected 42 teachers for the State Award (2007-08) for their contribution in the field of education, co-curricular and social activities. An official spokesman said the awards would be presented by the Governor on the occasion of Teacher's Day on September 5 at Raj Bhawan here.

BC family alleges police inaction

A few families of the Kumhar Backward Caste in Ahulana village near Gohana, who have been facing social boycott from the people of upper caste of the village due to the alleged rape of a woman of the Backward Caste (BC) by two brothers of the upper caste, have threatened to migrate from the village if their grievances were not redressed by the police and the  administration.

Cop caught taking bribe

Head constable Sajjan Singh at Rohrai police station in the district was caught red-handed by a squad comprising DSP Balwan Singh Rana and SDM G.L.Yadav, while accepting a bribe of Rs 100 from Jaswant Singh, at a police barricade on the Rewari-Pataudi road near Chillarh village on Saturday night.

3 booked for forgery

The Model Town police has registered a case of cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation under Sections 420, 464, 465, 467, 468, 470, 471, 474, 120-B and 506 of the IPC against Yad Ram, the then tehsildar of Rewari, Registry clerk Sanjay Sarwan and 10 others.

2 die in fall from trains

Two persons died in separate incidents after they accidently fell down from trains on the Ambala-Saharanpur rail track. The identity of one of the deceased who was believed to be in his early thirties was yet to be ascertained.

Jail inmate commits suicide

Twenty-two-year-old Virender, an inmate of the local prison here, allegedly committed suicide last night. He hailed from Kabarchha village and was undergoing a jail-term of 10 years after being convicted in a gang-rape case in February last.

This was followed by a large-scale demonstration by the kin of the deceased, who have alleged that Virender was hanged inside the prison, but his death was shown as case of suicide by the jail officials. The district administration has ordered a probe which would be conducted by the Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM).

Police sources said Virender was among three persons who were arrested on June 4, 2006, after a case of gang-rape was registered against them. The other accused were his cousins and they were booked under Sections 376-B of the IPC. The court in its judgement in February this year had sentenced Virender to 10 years imprisonment.

However, at about 2.30 am, he hanged himself in the bathroom. He was lodged in barrack No. 1 in the jail. His body was discovered after about an hour by another inmate. The body has been sent for a postmortem.

Meanwhile, his family members and residents of Kabarchha village staged a demonstration outside the jail and the residences of the officials of the local administration, including the SP. They alleged that Virender had been murdered on the directions of the girl’s kin. The authorities have assured them of a probe.

The district police chief also assured of an enquiry after Virender’s family members along with other villagers met him. This is the second such death in the jail in the past few months. Earlier a resident of the city had also committed suicide in March this year.

20,000 Dalit families to get water connections

About Rs 100 crore will be spent on improving water supply and sewer system during the current year in urban and rural areas of this district. As many as 20,000 Dalit families in Kaithal, Kalayat, Guhla, Pai , Pundri and Rajound Assembly segments will be provided water connections under the Indira Gandhi drinking water supply scheme this year. This was stated by Randeep Singh Surjewala, public health and transport minister, while addressing a press conference at Padla village near here today.

The minister said that a sum of Rs 2,670 lakh would be spent on various projects to improve water supply and sewer system in Kaithal town alone during 2007-2008.

The minister said Rs 900 lakh would be spent in Kaithal town on setting up of three boosting stations, laying of 25 km new water pipelines, installation of 40 new shallow tubewells to augment drinking water supply.

In Kalayat town of this district, Rs 124 lakh would be spent for augmenting drinking water supply during the current year.

In Guhla, Rs 150 lakh would be spent for improving water supply and five boosting stations and 10 km additional water lines would be laid and Rs 105 lakh would be spent for acquiring land and laying trunk sewer lines during the current year.

In Pundri town Rs 140 lakh would be spent on improving water supply and Rs 110 lakh would be spent to improve sewer system there, he added .

The minister accompanied by local MLA S.S.Surjewala toured about a dozen villages in Kaithal assembly constituency and laid foundation stones of a number of development works.

Water level improves in Yamuna

The water level in the Yamuna was on the rise and discharge in the two canals- the western Yamuna canal and the eastern Yamuna canal-offtaking from the river was as per the indents issued by shareholder states in the river water.

The discharge recorded in the river at the Hathnikund barrage here was 34,000 cusecs today. As much as 13,369 cusecs of water was released in the WYC and 4,000 cusecs was released in the EYC for Uttar Pardesh.

The remaining about 13,000 was left in the river itself. The maximum discharge at the barrage in the river was recorded at 39,000 cusecs on Sunday.

42 teachers selected for State Award

The Haryana Government has selected 42 teachers for the State Award (2007-08) for their contribution in the field of education, co-curricular and social activities.

An official spokesman said the awards would be presented by the Governor on the occasion of Teacher's Day on September 5 at Raj Bhawan here.

He said the selected teachers would be awarded a cash prize of Rs 11,000, a shawl, a memento and a certificate.

Workshop on biosensor technology ends

The ninth DST (Department of Science and Technology)-sponsored national workshop on “Immobilised enzyme technology for sensors” organised at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) concluded here with the participating scientists resolving to develop and use biosensors for the welfare of mankind.

MDU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof R.S. Dhankar was the chief guest at the valedictory session of the workshop.

Prof Dhankar expressed the hope that the use of enzyme technology for developing biosensors would find its utility in human welfare. He underlined the importance of holding workshops for brainstorming on crucial scientific and other vital issues.

The delegates were awarded certificates by the VC on the occasion.

Prof T.P. Singh from AIIMS, New Delhi, asserted that research and development was key to societal and national development. He emphasised upon quality research and highlighted the role of biosensors in clinical diagnosis which was vital for the treatment of diseases.

Prof M.N. Gupta from IIT, Delhi, maintained that technology must be tailored to the needs of society. He underlined the rise of new genre of system biology. Dr A.P. Mishra from the Centre’s Department of Science and Technology asserted that DST was keen to promote scientific research in the country.

Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences at MDU and convener of the workshop, Prof C.S. Pundir, said important aspects of immobilised enzyme technology were discussed during the workshop. A number of eminent resource-persons delivered special lectures on enzyme technology and biosensors.

As many as 39 delegates from all over the country took part in the 10-day workshop, which commenced on August 24.

BC family alleges police inaction

A few families of the Kumhar Backward Caste in Ahulana village near Gohana, who have been facing social boycott from the people of upper caste of the village due to the alleged rape of a woman of the Backward Caste (BC) by two brothers of the upper caste, have threatened to migrate from the village if their grievances were not redressed by the police and the administration.

The Haryana Dalit and Pichra Varg Kalayankari Samiti has also threatened to organise a state-level demonstration on September 13 at Gohana if the police did not take any action.

The dispute refers to the alleged rape of a BC woman by two brothers of the upper caste on July 13. The woman alleged that the police neither got her medically examined nor register a case under Section 376 of the IPC.

However, the police did register a case but only under Section 354 of the IPC.

On the other hand, a case of alleged beating of the two brothers by the woman’s family, including her husband Krishan, father Diwan Singh Jaibir, Satyapal, Suresh, Bansi and Sanjay was registered by the Baroda police.

After a state-level protest by the samiti activists on August 13, the inquiry was handed over to Gohana DSP Arun Nehra. Meanwhile, a social panchayat of Ahulana village was held on August 21 and they announced to socially boycott the families of Diwan Singh and his two brothers Sher Singh and Suraj Bhan.

The panchayat also warned to impose a fine of Rs 1,100 on those who kept contacts with the socially boycotted families.

A meeting of the members of the community was held yesterday in Gohana where the DSP assured that the issue would be resolved soon.

Man enacts ‘Sholay’ scene

Taking a cue from the Bollywood blockbuster Sholay, a man climbed atop a 130-feet high mobile tower after a minor altercation with his wife at Pilimandori village in the district today.

Nathu Ram (50) is a chowkidar in the village and consumed liquor in the morning. Afterwards he had a tiff with his wife.

Nathu then climbed up the BSNL tower situated in the village. People tried to stop him but to no avail.

Soon hundreds of people assembled at the site and some workers of the fire brigade went up to bring him down.

However, he told them to go back or else he would jump down after throwing them on the ground.

Officials of the district administration have tried hard to convince him to come down by making appeals from loudspeakers, but he ignored their appeals.

In the evening an official of the BSNL Rajinder Kumar went up with a mobile phone and told Nathu that his wife wanted to talk to him.

He talked to his wife and other members of his family and when they assured him that they would not quarrel with him in future, he climbed down.

Lineman injured

Jhajjar, September 3
A lineman of the electricity department who was repairing a transformer was injured seriously when some unidentified persons switched on the mainline from the power house in Bamnoli village of Bahadurgarh subdivision here today.

Raghunath along with his assistant was repairing some fault in the transformer after switching off the mainline of power supply. In the meantime, three youths went to the power substation and forcibly switched on the supply. Operator Sunil Kumar who was present at the power house said all of them were drunk and when he tried to stop him, they thrashed him.

As a result, the lineman received the electric shock and fell off the pole resulting in multiple injuries. He was rushed to a private hospital in Bahadurgarh. The police has registered a case. — OC

Teachers to suspend work

In response to a call given by the All-India Federation of University College Teachers’ Organisation (AIFUCTO), the Haryana College Teachers’ Association (HCTA) will observe Teacher’s Day on September 5 as “Demands Day”.

Stating this here today, HCTA press secretary Dr Ravinder Gasso said that a decision to this effect was taken at the HCTA meeting yesterday.

College teachers in Haryana would protest against the indifferent attitude of the Central Government towards their demands by wearing black badges and suspending teaching work after 12 noon. The teachers would also submit a charter of demands to the Prime Minister through their respective deputy commissioners.

Their demands include constituting of a UGC Pay Review Committee so that the Sixth Pay Commission's recommendations can be reviewed well in time.

Gohana probe on September 10

Rohtak division commissioner J.P. Kaushik who was appointed inquiry officer to probe the violence that took place in Gohana subsequent to the murder of a Dalit youth Rakesh, alias Lara, on August 27, will hold the first public hearing on September 10.

Kaushik will hold the hearing at the Irrigation Rest House, Gohana, at 11 am.

An official spokesman said here today that anyone who had information about the incident or himself had witnessed the incident, could depose before Kaushik on September 10, along with an affidavit. His verbal statement would also be recorded by the inquiry officer.

On a complaint made to the deputy commissioner by Jaswant Singh, a squad was constituted and then a trap laid which led to the apprehension of the errant head constable.

A case under various Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused.

3 booked for forgery

The Model Town police has registered a case of cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and criminal intimidation under Sections 420, 464, 465, 467, 468, 470, 471, 474, 120-B and 506 of the IPC against Yad Ram, the then tehsildar of Rewari, Registry clerk Sanjay Sarwan and 10 others.

The case has been registered on a directive of the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate issued under Section 156(3) of the Cr PC on a petition filed by local citizen Shiv Shanker. The petitioner alleged that in collusion with the tehsildar, the registry clerk and several others, three persons- Ajay, Arun and Usha Devi, all residents of Delhi, had fraudulently sold a shopping type complex at the Naiwali Chowk here to Subhash, Jagdish and Surender, residents of various villages, in 2004. He further alleged that the complex did not belong to them. The police is investigating. — OC

2 die in fall from trains

Two persons died in separate incidents after they accidently fell down from trains on the Ambala-Saharanpur rail track. The identity of one of the deceased who was believed to be in his early thirties was yet to be ascertained.

Sources in the Government Railway Police (GRP) said Abhishek (20) of Khandelwal village, Amritsar, Punjab, fell from the Punjab Mail and died. His brother, Anil, said he was on his way back home from Uttar Pradesh. He fell near Mustfabad railway station and was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to the injuries. His body was handed over after a postmortem.

In the second incident, the GRP found a mutilated body along the rail track. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased fell from a moving train.

The selection of Haryana karatekas for the 5th World Karate Federation Championship was held here yesterday. The tournament will be held in Turkey from October 19 to 21.

Hemant Sharma, general secretary, sports karate-do association of Haryana, said the selected players would participate in national trials to be held at Chennai on September 8. The selected karatekas in the cadet category are Karan Sharma - 75 kg, Sunil Yadav - 53 kg, Vikas Sharma - 62 kg and Preeti Dhyani - 44 kg. The following have been selected in the junior category: Rajesh Dalal - 58 kg, Sunil Rathi - 70 kg and Sulekha - 57 kg.

Association president Daleep K. Mittal said efforts were being made to promote the game in Haryana.

188 donate blood

As many as 188 persons, including 75 women, donated blood at a blood donation camp organised by Sant Nirankari Mandal, Kalka branch, on Monday. Tara Singh, head of the Kalka branch of the mandal, said a team of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, conducted the camp. He said there was always shortage of blood during summer.
